Plasma membrane impacts of particulate matter on the blood-brain barrier.

The potential for inhaled environmental particulate matter (PM) to cause neuronal effects is a growing concern, yet the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. There are two potential exposure routes via transport though the olfactory nerve transport and direct interaction of the circulating PM with the blood-brain barrier (BBB). This study investigated the plausible mechanism by which PM, once in circulation, could cross BBB's via the endotheliocytes, specifically focusing on the role of the plasma membrane. An in vitro BBB model (hCMEC/D3 cells) was exposed to ambient London PM (PM10, PM2.5) a

The Association between Dietary and Circulating Copper Levels and Osteoporosis: a Scoping Review.

Copper plays a crucial role in osteoporosis by regulating osteoblast function, inhibiting osteoclast activity, and promoting bone matrix maturation. However, the epidemiological relationship between copper and osteoporosis remains inconclusive. This scoping review systematically examined the existing evidence on the association between dietary and circulating copper levels and bone related diseases with a special focus on osteoporosis. Studies were identified through comprehensive search of electronic databases from inception to January 2025. Eligible studies included randomized clinical trial

Targets of T Cell Responses to SARS-CoV-2 Coronavirus in Humans with COVID-19 Disease and Unexposed Individuals.

Understanding adaptive immunity to SARS-CoV-2 is important for vaccine development, interpreting coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pathogenesis, and calibration of pandemic control measures. Using HLA class I and II predicted peptide "megapools," circulating SARS-CoV-2-specific CD8+ and CD4+ T cells were identified in ∼70% and 100% of COVID-19 convalescent patients, respectively. CD4+ T cell responses to spike, the main target of most vaccine efforts, were robust and correlated with the magnitude of the anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG and IgA titers. The M, spike, and N proteins each accounted for 11%-2

Presence of antibodies against tick-borne encephalitis virus in sheep in Tunisia, North Africa.

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEv) is a flavivirus that circulates in a complex cycle involving small mammals as amplifying hosts and ticks as vectors and reservoirs. The current study aimed to investigate the presence of TBEv in Tunisian sheep. A sample of 263 adult sheep were selected from 6 localities where Ixodes ricinus is well established. Sera were screened using ELISA for TBEv IgG detection, then the doubtful and positive sera were tested by the seroneutralisation test (SNT) and screened for West Nile Virus (WNv) IgG for cross-reaction assessment. RESULTS: The ELISA for

Antigenic analysis of genetic variants of Canine distemper virus.

Canine distemper virus (CDV) is an RNA virus of the genus Morbillivirus within the family Paramyxoviridae. CDV produces multi-systemic disease in dogs and other terrestrial carnivores. With the development of modified live vaccines in the 1950s and 1960s, the disease, with a few exceptions, has been successfully controlled. However, recently the cases of CDV in vaccinated dogs have been increasing throughout the world, including the United States. There are many reasons that can lead to vaccine failure, including antigenic differences between the vaccine strains and the currently circulating w

Association of circulating sclerostin levels with fat mass and metabolic disease--related markers in Japanese postmenopausal women.

CONTEXT: Wnt/β-catenin signaling is related to the pathogenesis of osteoporosis, diabetes, and metabolic diseases. Sclerostin is an inhibitor of Wnt/β-catenin signaling. However, there are few data regarding the relationship between sclerostin levels and metabolic disease. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify the relationship between serum sclerostin levels, body composition markers, and the markers of metabolic disease. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PATIENTS: The present study is a cross-sectional study. We measured serum sclerostin levels in 352 Japanese postmenopausal women and analyzed the rel

Maternal and fetal hemodynamic effects of diazoxide.

Effects of diazoxide on systemic and uterine hemodynamics as well as on fetal circulation and blood respiratory gases were investigated in chronically instrumented pregnant sheep. Diazoxide was administered intravenously either to the ewe or directly to the fetus in doses calculated on the basis of body weight. Transfer of drug across placenta was also investigated. Results showed that: a) when injected into the mother, there was consistent hypotensive effect with increased cardiac output and decreased systemic vascular resistance; uterine blood flow might not change or might decrease slightly

The Role of Maternal Immune Activation in the Pathogenesis of Autism: A Review of the Evidence, Proposed Mechanisms and Implications for Treatment.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disease that is characterized by a deficit in social interactions and communication, as well as repetitive and restrictive behaviors. Increasing lines of evidence suggest an important role for immune dysregulation and/or inflammation in the development of ASD. Recently, a relationship between inflammation, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial dysfunction has been reported in the brain tissue of individuals with ASD. Some recent studies have also reported oxidative stress and mitochondrial abnormalities in animal models of maternal immune ac

Surgery for malignant involvement of the superior vena cava.

This study reviews surgical operations on seven patients with intrathoracic tumors involving the superior vena cava (SVC). Among these patients, five were found to have advanced bronchogenic carcinoma; one was found to have thyroid carcinoma; and another was found to have thymic carcinoma. The incidence of SVC involvement in resectable lung cancer patients at the National Cheng-Kung University Hospital was 5.8% (5/85). Total excision of SVC was done in three patients and three different prostheses (ringed GoreTex, woven Dacron and pericardial tube graft) were interposed. Four patients underwen

Calcium-activated ATPase of the chick embryonic chorioallantoic membrane. Identification, developmental expression, and topographic relationship with calcium-binding protein.

A Ca2+-activated ATPase activity is present in the chick embryonic chorioallantoic membrane (CAM), the placenta-like tissue which translocates eggshell calcium into the embryonic circulation. The enzyme is membrane-bound, ATP-specific, Mg2+-dependent, exhibits dual Km values of 30 microM and 0.3 mM Ca2+, and has a Mr of 170,000. Throughout embryonic development, a single electrophoretic form of the Ca2+-ATPase is found and, furthermore, its specific activity as a function of age follows a bimodal pattern. In particular, from incubation days 14-15 to the end of gestation, a period representing

Cross-Subtype Detection of HIV-1 Capsid p24 Antigen Using a Sensitive Europium Nanoparticle Assay.

Accurate and early detection of diverse HIV-1 subtypes using currently available p24 antigen assays have been a major challenge. We report the development of a sensitive time resolved fluorescence (TRF) europium nanoparticle immuno assay for cross subtype detection of p24 antigen using broadly cross-reactive antibodies. Several antibodies were tested for optimal reactivity with antigens of diverse HIV-1 subtypes and circulating recombinant forms. We tested HIV strains using this assay for sensitivity and quantification ability at the pico-gram per millilter level. We identified two broadly cro

Hypotension and pulmonary atelectasis during general anaesthesia: a randomised crossover laboratory study.

BACKGROUND: Atelectasis is common during general anaesthesia and contributes to postoperative pulmonary complications. Despite preventive strategies targeting established underlying mechanisms, extensive atelectasis still often occurs, suggesting that additional factors may be involved. We tested the hypothesis that hypotension contributes to atelectasis formation during anaesthesia. METHODS: We conducted a randomised, evaluator-blinded crossover study in 12 anaesthetised, mechanically ventilated pigs under conditions simulating anaesthesia induction, in which preoxygenation was followed by e

Placental hexokinase activity is related to fetal blood flow distribution in a cross-sectional study of healthy human pregnancies at term.

OBJECTIVE: Given that placental hexokinase is a key enzyme in glucose metabolism, we hypothesized that placental hexokinase activity is related to fetal blood flow distribution in healthy pregnancies with scheduled cesarean delivery at term. METHODS: We included sixty-seven healthy pregnant women at term. Blood flow in the maternal uterine artery, umbilical vein, and ductus venosus was measured by Doppler ultrasound. Blood samples from the maternal radial artery and uterine vein, and umbilical artery and vein were collected at scheduled cesarean section, and glucose and insulin concentrations

Impaired cerebral blood flow regulation and cognition in male football players.

Football players are at increased risk of neurodegeneration, the likely consequence of repetitive mechanical trauma caused by heading the ball. However, to what extent a history of heading the ball affects cerebral blood flow (CBF) regulation and its potential relationship to cognitive impairment is unknown. To address this, we recruited 16 concussion-free male amateur football players (age: 25 ± 6 y) with a history of heading the ball (18 ± 6 y) and 18 sex, age, education, and activity-matched controls with no prior history of contact sport participation or concussion. Cerebral perfusion was

The mammalian gastro-intestinal tract is a NOT a major extra-pineal source of melatonin.

In 1992, a paper reported that the melatonin content of the rat duodenum was 24 000 ± 2000 pg/g tissue (range: 4000-100 000 pg/g) while the pineal melatonin content was 580 000 ± 36 000 pg/g. The data has been used for the last 30 years to infer that the gut produces 400 hundred times more melatonin than the pineal gland and that it is the source of plasma melatonin during the daytime. No-one has ever challenged the statement. In this review, evidence is summarised from the literature that pinealectomy eliminates melatonin from the circulation and that studies to the contrary have relied upon
