Effect of Osmotic Dehydration on Physico-Chemical Characteristics, Bioactive Compounds and Volatiles Profile of Diospyros kaki Subjected to Different Drying Methods.

The seasonality of Diospyros kaki limits its consumption, making it increasingly necessary to develop products that allow it to be available all year round. Therefore, the aim of this study was to optimize the osmotic dehydration process and to evaluate the changes in the physico-chemical, bioactive and volatile composition of persimmon subjected to drying. A central composite rotatable design was used with the independent variables as sucrose concentration (%) and immersion time (min). The desirability function for sucrose solution concentration and immersion time was 29.5% for 60 min for hot…

The new bilastine eye drop formulation protects against conjunctival dehydration and promotes corneal wound healing in a comparative in vitro study.

Bilastine is a non-sedating, highly selective H1-antihistamine with proven efficacy and safety in treating allergic rhinoconjunctivitis and … superior retention on the ocular surface. It also showed strong protective effects against in vitro dehydration, mainly due to the presence of HA, and did not exhibit cytotoxicity in human primary conjunctival cells. In wound healing assays, preservative-free ketotifen 0.025%, bilastine 0.6%, and azelastine 0.05% promoted corneal wound repair at 72 h, outperf …

Inactivation of Desiccation-Resistant Salmonella on Apple Slices Following Treatment with ε-Polylysine, Sodium Bisulfate, or Peracetic Acid and Subsequent Dehydration.

Salmonella is capable of surviving dehydration within various foods, such as dried fruit. Dried fruit, including apple slices, have been the subject of product recalls due to contamination with Salmonella. A study was conducted to determine the fate of Salmonella on apple slices, following immersion in three antimicrobial solutions (viz., ε-polylysine [epsilon-polylysine or EP], sodium bisulfate [SBS], or peracetic acid [PAA]), and subsequent hot air dehydration. Gala apples were aseptically cored and sliced into 0.4 cm thick rings, bisected, and inoculated with a five-strain composite of desi…

Hydrogen Sulfide-Mediated Activation of O-Acetylserine (Thiol) Lyase and l/d-Cysteine Desulfhydrase Enhance Dehydration Tolerance in Eruca sativa Mill.

Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) has emerged as an important signaling molecule and plays a significant role during different environmental stresses in plants. The present work was carried out to explore the potential role of H₂S in reversal of dehydration stress-inhibited O-acetylserine (thiol) lyase (OAS-TL), l-cysteine desulfhydrase (LCD), and d-cysteine desulfhydrase (DCD) response in arugula (Eruca sativa Mill.) plants. Dehydration-stressed plants exhibited reduced water status and increased levels of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) and superoxide (O₂•-) content that increased membrane permeability and li…

Spectroscopic properties, catalytic activities and mechanism studies of [(TpPh)Co(X)(CH3OH)m] . nCH3OH: bicarbonate dehydration in the presence of inhibitors.

Two inhibitor-containing 'half-sandwich' cobalt(II) complexes [(TpPh)Co(X)(CH3OH)m] x nCH3OH ((TpPh) = hydrotris (3-phenylpyrazolyl)borate; 1: X- = N3-, m = 1, n = 2; 2: X- = NCS-, m = 0, n = 0) have been synthesized and used as the catalysts in the bicarbonate dehydration reaction. The structures of 1 and 2 were determined by X-ray diffraction analysis, which shows that N3- and NCS- coordinate to the Co(II) ions of 1 and 2, respectively, with the Co-N bond lengths of 1.992(6) A and 1.901(3) A. The coordination geometries of the Co(II) complexes in solution are five-coordinated trigonal bipyra…

Dehydrative formation and biological evaluation of allylic sulfonamides from allylic alcohols using recyclable silica-supported acid catalysts.

A reusable transition-metal-free catalytic system has been developed to facilitate the dehydrative sulfonamidation of primary and secondary allylic alcohols under mild reaction conditions. The method employs p-toluenesulfonic acid as an immobilized Brønsted acid on a silica gel solid-support, and the catalytic system has been shown to be recyclable without significant loss of activity for 3-5 uses. A wide range of sulfonamide and allylic alcohol substrates are tolerated in this transformation, and products have been isolated from reactions employing known pharmaceuticals such as celecoxib and

Development of an evidence based pediatric subcutaneous rehydration "hypodermoclysis" protocol for mildly dehydrated children with a history of difficult venous access.

BACKGROUND: Establishing peripheral intravenous access in children who present to a hospital setting with mild to moderate dehydration is often challenging. These children may not require hospitalization especially when unable to tolerate rehydration orally. An alternate access option for rehydration therapy is hypodermoclysis, commonly referred to as subcutaneous rehydration (SCR), where fluids can be infused and absorbed through the subcutaneous tissue. Unlike achieving peripheral vascular access, subcutaneous needle insertion is not complex and results in minimal venous attempts and discomf…

A Chinese pediatric patient with thalassemia traits and compound heterozygous mutations in the PIEZO1 gene suspected of having dehydrated hereditary stomatocytosis.

BACKGROUND: Dehydrated Hereditary Stomatocytosis (DHS), also known as Hereditary Xerocytosis (HX), is a rare genetic disorder primarily arising from gain-of-function mutations in PIEZO1, which disrupt mechanosensitive ion channels on red blood cell membranes. This dysfunction leads to cellular dehydration and chronic anemia, while DHS/HX cells exhibit increased hypotonic resistance. Interpreting PIEZO1 variants requires integrating clinical findings with specialized knowledge. METHODS: Laboratory tests, whole-genome sequencing, and Sanger sequencing were conducted for clinical phenotyping and…

Multilevel quantum mechanical calculations show the role of promoter molecules in the dehydration of methanol to dimethyl ether in H-ZSM-5.

Methyl carboxylate esters promote the formation of dimethyl ether (DME) from the dehydration of methanol in H-ZSM-5 zeolite. We employ a multilevel quantum method to explore the possible associative and dissociative mechanisms in the presence, and absence, of six methyl ester promoters. This hybrid method combines density functional theory, with dispersion corrections (DFT-D3), for the full periodic system, with second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) for small clusters representing the reaction site, and coupled cluster with single, double, and perturbative triple substitution (…

Dehydrated human amnion/chorion membrane allograft for postoperative wounds following Mohs micrographic surgery: a retrospective comparative evaluation.

INTRODUCTION: Defects that remain after MMS cannot always be repaired immediately. When closure is not feasible, wounds are left to heal by secondary intention and may take weeks to close. In such cases, the use of an allograft that stimulates endogenous wound healing pathways may be desirable. OBJECTIVE: This retrospective study assessed whether the use of dHACM allograft after MMS led to a statistically significant improvement in post-Mohs wound closure rates compared with secondary intention healing. METHODS: This study evaluated 80 patients who underwent MMS and compared time to complete

Dehydrated human amnion/chorion membrane allograft with spongy layer to significantly improve the outcome of chronic non-healing wounds.

We investigated the healing effect of a new dehydrated amnion/chorion membrane with a spongy layer over a 30-month period in 32 patients with 53 chronic non-healing wounds of different aetiologies. Wounds with <40% surface reduction after 4 weeks of best wound treatment underwent weekly allograft application by a certified wound specialist based on national guidelines and a standardised protocol until complete healing or definite treatment interruption. The main outcome measure was the percentage of wound surface reduction from baseline calculated using digital planimetry follow-up photographs

Expandable dehydrated human umbilical cord allograft for the management of nonhealing lower extremity wounds in patients with diabetes: a case series.

Advanced wound treatments are derived primarily from human placental membranes or animal tissue sources and composed of cellular and acellular dermal substitutes. The use of advanced wound treatments is practitioner directed and individualized to the wound characteristics. A multidisciplinary approach to wound closure is necessary, including the use of advanced treatments (eg, human umbilical cord derivatives) to achieve durable resolution of hard-to-heal wounds. In this case series, DHUC was used as an alternative to amniotic and amnion/chorion allografts for closure of a deep heel ulcer and

No more cold-chain failures, using dehydrated reagents in ELISA antibody-detection against animal trypanosomes of African origin.

Animal trypanosomoses due to trypanosomes of African origin (ATAO), mainly caused by Trypanosoma congolense type Savannah (TCS), T. brucei brucei (TBB), T. vivax (TV), and T. evansi, are widespread diseases that affect domestic and wild mammals and have a huge economic impact. ATAO clinical suspicions are usually confirmed by parasitological and molecular methods, while sero-epidemiological surveys are generally carried out using the OIE-recommended ELISA method based on whole cell lysate soluble antigens (WCLSA) from purified trypanosomes; this reagent is usually stored frozen.
