Two million Americans use cocaine on a regular basis. Sixty-nine percent of cocaine in the United States is adulterated with levamisole, a veterinary antihelminthic drug. In 2008, the first cases of levamisole-induced agranulocytosis and vasculopathy associated with adulterated cocaine were reported in the southwestern United States. Since then, reports of levamisole-associated toxicity have become increasingly common. The authors present the case of a 47-year-old woman from Michigan with purpuric lesions likely secondary to levamisole-induced leukocytoclastic vasculitis.

Levamisole is a pharmaceutical with anthelminthic and immunomodulatory properties that was previously used in both animals and humans to treat inflammatory conditions and cancer. Impurity profiles of rifaximin produced in China were investigated systematically by LCMS methods. Eleven impurities from the raw materials of rifaximin produced in China were detected. We adopted the Diagnostic fragment-ion-based extension strategy (DFIBES) for deducing the structure of unknown impurities. Impurity 1 was the 30-hydroxylated product of rifaximin. Three Sumatran tigers (Panthera tigris sumatrae) at the Heidelberg Zoo in Germany presented with severe neurologic signs. Physical examination and diagnostic tests did not reveal a definitive diagnosis. Two days after initial presenting signs, all of the animals appeared clinically normal. An investigation into this outbreak revealed that all animals received horse meat on the evening before the incident. A toxicologic examination was initiated and serum analysis of the affected female tiger cub and the horse meat revealed contamination with pentobarbital.

An analytical method based on inductively coupled plasma/mass spectrometry (ICP/MS) was developed for the determination of 28 mineral elements (Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, Sr, Cd, Ag, Ba, Pb, Bi Y, La, Ce, Nd, Pr, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu) in Indian opium samples.
