Encrusted cystitis is a rare chronic inflammatory condition of the bladder. The case of a male patient with dysuria and gross hematuria accompanied by the passage of stone fragments is presented. Multimodal therapy was undertaken. He was treated with Renacidin (citric acid mixture) irrigation as an inpatient. One month later, he underwent cystourethroscopy and was determined to have residual stone and fibrosis of the prostatic urethra. We report a case of sclerosing stromal tumor of the ovary in a 30-year-old pregnant patient presenting with pelvic pain, dysuria, and metrorrhagia. Very few reports of sclerosing stromal tumor of the ovary during pregnancy have been presented. The purpose of our work is to present the findings at physical examination, ultrasonography, magnetic resonance imaging, and histopathology, to review the literature regarding this uncommon neoplasm, and to show the usefulness of magnetic resonance imaging in the assessment of pelvic masses during pregnancy.

We present an adult case of mumps brainstem encephalitis. He was successfully treated with steroid pulse therapy and recovered completely except for persistent dysuria. He had not been vaccinated and had no history of acute mumps infection. We consider that encephalitis in this case was caused by a reversible autoimmune process triggered by mumps infection. We emphasize the usefulness of pulse therapy for the treatment of some cases of mumps brainstem encephalitis in addition to the importance of mumps vaccination to prevent such a severe complication as encephalitis.

Primary malignant lymphomas of the bladder are infrequent. We report a 70 year old woman presenting with hematuria, dysuria, malaise and a 5 kg weight loss. Pelvic ultrasound examination showed a 8 x 8 x 8 cm solid and cystic mass adjacent to the bladder and uterus. Cystoscopic biopsy disclosed a low grade B cell non Hodgkin lymphoma. She was treated with 6 cycles of chemotherapy with disappearance of the mass. Two years after admission, the patient is free of disease.

The diagnosis of male genitourinary tuberculosis is seldom apparent until the disease is far advanced. The earliest clinical symptoms in most cases are epididymitis, dysuria, and hematuria. In the present case, evaluation of a 26-year-old male complaining about primary infertility revealed leukocytospermia and a normal sperm count. The diagnosis of genitourinary tuberculosis was based on positive morning urine culture. Infertility is an uncommon first sign of male genitourinary tuberculosis, but may be a clue to early diagnosis, as demonstrated in the present case.

We report 3 cases of eosinophilic granulomatous cystitis in children. All presented with hematuria, urinary urgency, and dysuria. Treatment with oral corticosteroids led to rapid and complete recovery in 2 of the 3 cases. In the third case recovery was prolonged without the use of steroids. Because of the presumed immunologic nature of this disease, previous authors have recommended the use of corticosteroids in its management. A review of the literature suggests that the disease is probably of immunologic nature and that corticosteroids shorten symptomatic recovery from this disease.

A 13-year-old girl presented with abdominal pain, fever, dysuria, incontinence and pyuria and was subsequently diagnosed as having systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) with extensive gastrointestinal involvement and an associated interstitial cystitis. The authors present the literature and their own data on the use of a double contrast study of the urethra in 38 male patients with dysuria of various etiology. The investigations were performed with roentgeno-television control using viscid contrast substances (propyliodone) and gel-like triiodinated liquid contrast media (verografin, urografin, triombrast, etc.). A high informative value of the method in the detection of pathological changes in the urethra and the neck of the urinary bladder, lesser risk of the development and lesser severity of urethro-venous refluxes were noted.

A case of blind-ending bifid ureter is presented. A 65-year-old man was admitted with the complaint of dysuria. He had no past episode of left flank pain or pyelonephritis. Digital examination and urethrography suggested benign prostatic hypertrophy. Drip infusion pyelography showed an abnormal cavity at the lower portion of the left ureter. He was diagnosed as benign prostate hypertrophy and left blind-ending bifid ureter. During suprapubic prostatectomy, the bifid ureter was resectd. The related reports are reviewed in the Japanese literature.

We had 170 female patients with presenting symptoms of vaginal itching, dysuria, dyspareunia, burning and vaginal discharge. We performed 200 times vaginal microbial exploration on the said 170 patients, with the repetition of the procedure on 30 out of these 200 patients for the second time. We had a positive result for vulvovaginal candidosis on 60 occasions. These positive results for yeast infection can be related to the incidence of other microbial infections such as mycoplasma-, ureaplasma-, trichomonas-, gonococcal- and chlamydia infections.

Rhabdomyosarcoma of the prostate in children is rare. This is a case report of a six-year-old boy with rhabdomyosarcoma of the prostate who was admitted to our hospital, complaining of pain on urination and dysuria. Further examination revealed metastasis to the lungs and lymph nodes. He was treated with vincristine, actinomycin-D, cyclophosphamide, but this therapy was not effective. He died of respiratory failure due to the diffuse pulmonary and pleural metastasis of tumor, 41 days after admission. This is only the 9th reported case in Japan of rhabdomyosarcoma of the prostate in a child.

Video recordings during radiodynamic studies of miction (ERDM) in 50 patients with spinal cord injuries produced images markedly superior in quality to permictional films in cases of dysuria. Correlation with cystosphincterometry (CSM) findings were good for normal cases. Dynamic studies were more effective than CSM for the neck, but less reliable for the detrusor and striated muscle on the condition than an electromyogram had been performed. In patients with complete spasticity the type of miction cannot be predicted from the level of the lesion.

A case of carcinoma in urethral diverticulum is herein reported. The patient was a 58-year-old housewife presenting with the complaint of dysuria. Physical examination revealed a hen-egg-sized cystic mass at the anterior vaginal wall. Complete excision of the diverticulum was performed transvestibulary. Pathologically, it was described as papillary adenocarcinoma. The patient's postoperative course was uneventful and she was discharged. She was readmitted because of recurrence of tumor 9 months after the first operation. Forty-five cases including this case are reviewed and discussed.

A survey for bacteriuria was conducted in a community-wide, unselected population of women 16--69 years old. The overall prevalence of bacteriuria was 3.5%. The prevalence of bacteriuria increased with age with a linear trend, but with a significant nonlinear component as well. Bacteriuria was associated with parity after correction for the effects of age.
