Internally coupled ears in living mammals.

It is generally held that the right and left middle ears of mammals are acoustically isolated from each other, such that mammals must rely on neural computation to derive sound localisation cues. There are, however, some unusual species in which the middle ear cavities intercommunicate, in which case each ear might be able to act as a pressure-difference receiver. This could improve sound localisation at lower frequencies. The platypus Ornithorhynchus is apparently unique among mammals in that its tympanic cavities are widely open to the pharynx, a morphology resembling that of some non-mammal…

The blood supply to the canine middle ear.

Current descriptions of the anatomy of the blood supply to the canine middle ear are either incomplete or inconsistent, particularly in regards to the vascular branches in close proximity to the temporomandibular articulation (TMJ). To further investigate this blood supply, dissections (n = 9), corrosion casts (n = 4), and computed tomography (n = 8) of canine temporal regions/ears were performed. The goal of this study was to identify and describe branches of the external carotid and maxillary arteries in close proximity to the TMJ that supply the middle ear of the dog. Specific focus was pla…

Maturation of middle ear transmission in children.

The goal of the current study was to characterize the normative features of wideband acoustic immittance in children for describing the functional maturation of the middle ear in 5 to 12-year-old children. Absorbance and group delay were measured in adults and three groups of children, 5-6, 7-9 and 10-12-year-olds, in a cross-sectional design. Absorbance showed significant effects of the age group in four out of ten center frequencies of one-half-octave bins from 211 to 6000 Hz, while there was no significant effect for group delay at any frequency. Older children (10-12 years) showed absorban…

Surgical Management of Ear Diseases in Rabbits.

Otitis externa and media are frequently diagnosed disorders in rabbits and are particularly common in lop-eared breeds because of the specific anatomy of the ear canal. Medical management for otitis externa and media often provides only a temporary improvement in clinical signs. Surgery by means of partial or total ear canal ablation (PECA or TECA) combined with lateral bulla osteotomy (LBO) represents a feasible approach that is well tolerated and provides a good clinical outcome. Short-term complications associated with PECA/TECA-LBO include facial nerve paralysis and vestibular disease.

Functions of the inner ear in psoriatic arthritis.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate whether there is a negative impact as a result of psoriatic arthritis disease of the inner ear function. METHODS: Twenty-four successive patients and 38 healthy volunteers, younger than 60 years of age, who were followed up for at least for one year in the outpatient clinics of physical therapy and rehabilitation with the diagnosis of PsA according to CASPAR criteria (17) and who did not complain of any hearing impairment were included in the study. Distortion-product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) values between 1kHz and 4kHz, tympanometric examinatio…

Malignant eccrine spiradenoma of the external ear.

Eccrine spiradenoma is a benign tumor of sweat gland origin. Malignant eccrine spiradenoma is a rare neoplasm which almost always arises from a pre-existing spiradenoma lesion. In this article, we present a patient with malignant eccrine spiradenoma of the auricula with a prior diagnosis as benign eccrine spiradenoma. Although malignant transformation is usually associated with aggressive behavior, we did not detect recurrence or metastasis in four years of follow-up after performing wide excision.

Osteoclasts are not activated in middle ear cholesteatoma.

It is unclear whether osteoclasts are present and activated in cholesteatomas. We explored the expression of messenger RNA (mRNA) for osteoclast biomarkers and regulating factors in middle ear cholesteatomas to elucidate the level of osteoclast activity in this disease. Bone powder was collected from 14 patients with cholesteatomatous and noncholesteatomatous chronic otitis media during tympanomastoidectomy, separately from cortical bone of the mastoid (clean bone powder), from bone neighboring cholesteatoma (cholesteatomatous bone powder), and from bone of the air cells and antrum of nonchole…

[Replantation of amputated ear with anastomosis of vessel].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the application of microsurgical technique in the replantation of amputated ear. METHODS: 7 cases of amputated ears were analyzed from June 2009 to April 2015 in our department. We used microsurgical technique to anastomose about five vessels and nerves. The blood supply of auricle was restored within three to six hours. All subjects underwent treatments including anti-freezing, anti-spasm and anti-infection treatment after the emergency surgery. RESULTS: 7 amputated ears were all survived after replantation. The patients were followed up for one month to six months…

Relapsing polychondritis: inflamed joints and ears.

BACKGROUND: Relapsing polychondritis (RP) is an episodic and progressive inflammatory disease of the cartilaginous structures, including elastic cartilage of the ear and nose, hyaline cartilage of the peripheral joints, fibrocartilage at axial sites, and cartilage of the tracheo-bronchial tree. The spectrum of its presentations may vary from intermittent mild episodes of chondritis to occasional organ involvement or even life-threatening manifestations. CASE REPORT: We presented a 64 year-old male patient with bilaterally knee arthritis and discoloration of pinna. CONCLUSION: There is lack o…

Surgical anatomy and pathology of the middle ear.

Middle ear surgery is strongly influenced by anatomical and functional characteristics of the middle ear. The complex anatomy means a challenge for the otosurgeon who moves between preservation or improvement of highly important functions (hearing, balance, facial motion) and eradication of diseases. Of these, perforations of the tympanic membrane, chronic otitis media, tympanosclerosis and cholesteatoma are encountered most often in clinical practice. Modern techniques for reconstruction of the ossicular chain aim for best possible hearing improvement using delicate alloplastic titanium prost…

[Cholesteatoma of the external and middle ear in the childhood].

The objective of the present work was to enhance the effectiveness of diagnostics of cholesteatoma of the external and middle ear in the children. The study included 66 patients presenting with chronic suppurative otitis media and one child having cholesteatoma of the external auditory meatus. All the patients were examined with the use of otoendoscopy and CT of the temporal bones. It was shown that the frequent occurrence of acute suppurative otitis media, exudative suppurative otitis media, and adhesive otitis media is the risk factor of the development of cholesteatoma of the external and m…

Salivary gland choristoma of the middle ear.

Choristoma of the middle ear is a rare condition characterized by the presence of normal salivary gland tissue in the middle ear space. Salivary gland choristomas are benign lesions that are frequently associated with ossicular chain and facial nerve anomalies. Total surgical excision is indicated when there is no risk of damaging the facial nerve. We describe a new case of salivary gland choristoma of the middle ear, and we discuss the etiology, histologic features, and management of such lesions. Our patient was a 22-year-old woman in whom we surgically removed a whitish retrotympanic mass. …

Inner ear protein as a biomarker in circulation?

Serum biomarkers detect the earliest events in disease, monitor management, and provide insight into disease pathogenesis. At this time, there are no biomarkers available for otologic disorders. Otolin-1 is a scaffolding protein exclusively expressed in otoconia and cells of the vestibule and the cochlea; therefore, it may be a biomarker candidate for assessing the health of the inner ear. As a proof of concept, we used serum samples from controls without otologic history and subjects with a history of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), performed enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for…

Mining immune epitopes in the inner ear.

Etiologies for many inner ear disorders, including autoimmune inner ear disease, sudden sensorineural hearing loss, and Meniere's disease, remain unknown. Indirect evidence suggests an immune-mediated process involving an allergic or autoimmune mechanism. We examined whether known immunogenic proteins share sequence similarity with inner ear proteins, which may lead to cross-reactivity and detrimental immune activation. Comprehensive bioinformatic analyses of primary sequences of intact and mutated proteins associated with human hearing loss and all proteins known to be expressed in the human …

Leiomyosarcoma of the middle ear and temporal bone.

Leiomyosarcoma is a malignant tumor of smooth muscle cells that is exceedingly rare in the middle ear and temporal bone. Wide surgical resection is treatment of choice and adjuvant treatment has not proven to be of benefit. This is a report on a patient with otorrhea and rapidly growing mass on postauricualr area. A tumor that was mainly located in the middle ear and temporal bone was surgically removed and proved to be a leiomyosarcoma. The optimal surgical technique and other treatment strategy are discussed.
