The effect of human fibrin adhesive applied to the middle ear has been studied in guinea pig. Auditory function was measured using acoustically evoked brainstem responses. Middle and inner ear structures were studied with light, transmission and scanning electron microscopy. A transitory conductive hearing loss was observed, but after 8 weeks the auditory function appeared normal. Microscopy of the middle and inner ear failed to show any tissue damage.

OBJECTIVES: While hearing loss is a known late effect of childhood cancer treatment, the impact of childhood cancer treatment on vestibular function has not been comprehensively explored. Vestibular impairment is associated with delayed gross motor development and impaired balance, and thus is important to measure in children. Few studies have examined peripheral vestibular end organ function in this population, and relationships between vestibular and audiometric function in children with cancer are limited. The purpose of this study was to (1) determine if tests of peripheral vestibular func

The inner ear is among the most intricate and complex structures in the body. Housed deep within the petrous temporal bone, it contains the organs for audition and balance. Our understanding of its structure and function has relied heavily on advances in imaging and novel visualization modalities. This review synthesizes the historical and technological progression of research on inner ear structure, tracing developments from early philosophical speculation and gross dissection to microscopy, serial histology, radiographic imaging, and contemporary high-resolution digital modalities. We outlin

INTRODUCTION: The primary objective of this review was to evaluate the effectiveness of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) in the treatment of inner ear decompression sickness (IEDCS). Secondary objectives were to summarise the diver characteristics, HBOT parameters and outcome measures.
METHODS: All descriptive observational study designs including case series and individual case reports involving divers suffering IEDCS treated with HBOT were included. PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL and EMBASE were used to search for texts reporting the outcome for divers treated with HBOT. Eligible studies were appra

OBJECTIVES: Inner ear malformations (IEMs) represent a major structural cause of congenital sensorineural hearing loss. This study aimed to examine the impact of IEM subtype on auditory perception and language development outcomes in pediatric cochlear implant (CI) users.
DESIGN: A total of 51 children with IEMs who underwent cochlear implantation were included. Of these, 12 (23.5%) had an incomplete partition type 1 (IP-1), 21 (41.2%) had incomplete partition type 2 (IP-2), 11 (21.6%) had enlarged vestibular aqueduct (EVA), and seven (13.7%) had cochlear aperture abnormalities.

The nervous system wiring requires the precise coordination of axon guidance, neuronal migration, and target cell recognition. Here, we show that inner ear circuit formation, relies on pioneer cells extending an axonal scaffold that selectively target nascent hair cells. High spatiotemporal imaging of pioneer axons reveal how they navigate through the cranial environment, establish dynamic cell-cell contacts with other axons to finally stabilize in target cells. These pioneer axons are required not only for follower axon growth but also for coordinated migration of follower neurons, revealing

Menière's disease (MD) is classically understood as a pressure-related disease of the inner ear; however, new histopathologic and imaging findings call for reassessment of this model. The current article focuses on new aspects of MD pathophysiology and derives innovative causal treatment approaches for the future based on cell and gene therapy. The recent differentiation between two biologically distinct endotypes (hypoplastic vs. degenerative) shifts the therapeutic focus from purely symptomic pressure reduction toward targeted modulation of epithelial function and regeneration. Building upon

Hearing loss is a widespread global disability, commonly treated using dexamethasone (Dex). However, targeted delivery of Dex to the inner ear remains a significant challenge due to the blood-perilymph barrier (BLB), which limits its therapeutic efficacy. In this study, we aimed to develop a strategy to enhance Dex delivery to the inner ear and improve its treatment outcome by the noninvasive intranasal approach. Also, poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)─liposomal nanoparticles were used as a drug carrier and loaded with Dex (PLN-Dex). For intranasal delivery, a thermosensitive hydrogel was fabricated

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage is a recognized cause of recurrent meningitis, and accurate identification of the CSF leakage site is essential for definitive surgical management. We report an adult case of recurrent meningitis associated with bilateral congenital inner ear malformations. The combined use of radionuclide cisternography and computed tomography (CT) cisternography successfully localized CSF leakage to the right inner ear, and surgical obliteration of the right inner ear prevented further recurrence of meningitis. A 46-year-old man experienced repeated episodes of bacterial men

Endolymphatic hydrops, which is one of the pathologic features of Ménière's disease, has been experimentally and clinically confirmed to be influenced by the blood circulation of vasopressin (VP). It is widely acknowledged that VP plays a pivotal role in regulating water homeostasis. It should also be noted that VP is susceptible to a number of external factors, including changes in the environment, dehydration, and fluctuations in atmospheric pressure. Furthermore, VP is a key regulator of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. The HPA axis is a significant neuroendocrine system that

Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) remains a significant global health burden due to its irreversible nature and limited treatment options. Recent advances in nanotechnology have introduced new possibilities for targeted drug delivery to the inner ear, with poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticles emerging as a promising platform. Biodegradable and biocompatible, PLGA nanoparticles can encapsulate diverse therapeutic agents and enable sustained, site-specific delivery to cochlear and vestibular structures. This review highlights key physicochemical properties of PLGA nanoparticles rel

This study utilizes the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database to analyze adverse reactions related to inner ear signs and symptoms potentially associated with antidepressant use. By examining FAERS data from the first quarter of 2004 to the fourth quarter of 2023, we observed higher reporting rates of tinnitus, vertigo, labyrinthitis, positional vertigo, and vestibular ataxia in association with antidepressants. Through de-duplication, standardization, and classification of the data, we identified adverse reaction reports linked to inner ear

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the transition of audiometric features in patients with inner ear schwannoma (IES) with a special focus on transient mixed hearing loss.
PATIENTS: Twelve patients were clinically diagnosed with an IES.
INTERVENTIONS: All patients underwent otoscopic and audiological examinations, including serial pure-tone audiometry and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. Additional audiometric measurements, including impedance audiometry, distortion product otoacoustic emissions, speech audiometry, and auditory brainstem responses were performed in selected patients.

The inner ear sensory neurons play a pivotal role in auditory processing and balance control. Though significant progresses have been made, the underlying mechanisms controlling the differentiation and survival of the inner ear sensory neurons remain largely unknown. During development, ISL1 and POU4F transcription factors are co-expressed and are required for terminal differentiation, pathfinding, axon outgrowth and the survival of neurons in the central and peripheral nervous systems. However, little is understood about their functional relationship and regulatory mechanism in neural develop
