BACKGROUND: The management of mild cases of type Ⅰ to Ⅱ conchal microtia involves grafting cartilage to the affected ear to increase the cartilaginous area and transfer more skin to cover the larger cartilage. Herein, we performed a novel combined surgical procedure based on "subtractive thinking" that included antihelix reconstruction and outer helix reconstruction that was successful in patients with mild type I to II conchal microtia.
METHODS: From January 2018 to September 2022, 65 patients with mild, unilateral, type I to II conchal microtia were enrolled in this study. All patients were

The case of a man, 25 years of age and presenting with chronic atrophic polychondritis (CAP), complicated by a complete atrioventricular block, double mitral valve incompetence and aneurysm of the ascending aorta, offered the possibility of investigating the various clinical manifestations and cardiovascular complications of this common disorder. CAP is a connectivitis of unknown etiology, it corresponds to ubiquitous and recurrent cartilage inflammation, leading to characteristic chondritis of the ears and nose, joint disease and laryngo-trachco-bronchial disorders. Other systemic impact is s

Spontaneous herniation of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) into the external auditory canal (EAC) is a rare occurrence. Typically, TMJ herniations are small and involve a focal defect in the EAC. In this report, we present an unusual case of extensive TMJ herniation measuring 17 mm, originating from a bony defect in the EAC. The patient underwent a successful treatment, which involved the surgical excision of the herniated mass and the subsequent reconstruction of the EAC using conchal cartilage. In this article, we will discuss the surgical techniques employed for repairing TMJ herniation in

Accessory tragus is a fairly common congenital malformation of the external ear. In the vast majority of cases it is an isolated developmental defect not associated with other abnormalities. However, the remote possibility exists that it could be associated with other abnormalities of the first and second branchial arch. Accessory tragus is a consistent feature of the oculoauriculovertebral syndrome (Goldenhar syndrome). When correctly identified, surgical excision of accessory tragus is quite simple and rarely results in any complications.

Pseudocyst of the auricle is a rare, asymptomatic cystic swelling of the auricle resulting from accumulation of yellow viscous fluid with unknown cause. We herein report 3 such patients in whom biochemical study of the aspirated fluid revealed markedly elevated activity of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and a preponderance of LDH-4 and LDH-5. We postulate that pseudocyst formation is due to the disruption of the auricular cartilage and that LDH in the fluid is released from the auricular cartilage. This observation supports that the lesions represent a pattern of chondromalacia. It is hypothesize

Tragal perichondrium is a widely used tissue seal in the oval window following stapes surgery. Autogenous and easily accessible, it is a suitable substance to cover the vestibule in total stapedectomy, and to seal around the prosthesis in small-fenestra stapedotomy. The incidence of complications from the use of perichondrium in this manner is exceedingly low. We report a case where tragal perichondrium in the oval window resulted in the proliferation of cartilage. The cartilage displaced the stapes prosthesis, resulting in a conductive loss. Although the chondrogenic potential of perichondriu

I. Correction of the prominent ear. A modification of the Mustarde-technique is reported. We mill with a diamonddrill two rims, one above and a second beneath the new anthelix. So we are able to form anthelix and helix to get a smooth contour. II. Restoration of superior helix. 1. Using the method reported by Cronin (1953) it is necessary to plan the reconstructed part a little bit larger than the normal contour. By shrinking of the skin and resorption of the incorporated cartilage we get normal proportions half a year later. 2. Using the method by Crikelair (1956) we took the auriculo-cephali

Osteoarthritis is one of the most common chronic diseases, which have involved 250 million people around the world. One of the challenges in the field of cartilage tissue engineering is to provide an adequate source of chondrocytes to prevent changes in gene expression profile as a result of multiple passages. We hypothesized that by creating a low invasive lesion by scalpel or shear laser in the outer ear cartilage and stimulation of wound healing process, hyperplasia occurs and will provide an appropriate number of autologous chondrocytes for extraction and use in articular cartilage tissue e…

ObjectiveBurns and injuries can lead to massive defects in the mastoid tissues, which increase the difficulty of ear reconstruction. It is crucial to choose an appropriate surgical method for these patients. Here, we introduce strategies for auricular reconstruction in patients without satisfactory mastoid tissues.MethodsFrom April 2020 to July 2021, 12 men and 4 women were admitted to our institution. Twelve patients were severely burned, 3 patients experienced car accidents, and 1 patient had a tumor on his ear. The temporoparietal fascia was used for ear reconstruction in 10 cases, and the

This study aimed to develop a novel surgery classification for an endoscopic approach to middle ear cholesteatoma. We retrospectively analyzed the surgical approaches and outcomes of patients with middle ear cholesteatoma. Middle ear cholesteatoma surgeries were divided into four types and two special types as follows: type I, attic retraction pocket, which only requires tympanostomy tube placement or retraction pocket resection and cartilage reconstruction; type II, cholesteatoma which is limited to the attic or in which endoscopy can confirm complete removal of mastoid cholesteatoma lesions,

The subject of our case report is a young girl who was attacked by a raccoon when she was 5 months old. She lost the majority of her nose, her entire right ear, and part of her upper lip. She had previous attempts at reconstructive surgery with poor results. Our collective goals were to provide lifelong reconstruction without the use of synthetic implants and to organize the steps in a way that provided psychological benefit early on while allowing her to continue education and childhood activities with minimal disruptions. We approached the patient's many problems in stages by starting with t

Liquefactive necrosis, clinically manifesting as wet gangrene, is a catastrophic complication of ischemic wounds driven by bacterial overgrowth, proteolytic tissue lysis, and loss of structural integrity; current treatments remain largely limited to surgical debridement or amputation. Here, we show that inorganic biomaterial films releasing hydroxide ions, with or without oxygen and hydrogen peroxide, can markedly inhibit the development and spread of liquefactive necrosis in ischemic skin and cartilage. A calcium peroxide (CaO2) loaded film in alginate hydrogel was evaluated in ischemic rat d

In 5 years 9 patients with a total of 16 painful ear nodules (chondrodermatitis helicis) have been treated as follows. A small excision is carried out with local anaesthesia for histological examination. The rest of the nodule or any other nodules are carbonized by means of the argon laser, also with local anaesthesia, including the surface of the cartilage under the nodules. There have been no cases of postoperative inflammation or infection. New nodules occurring several months after treatment have been successfully treated in the same way. There have been no real recurrences. The cosmetic r
