INTRODUCTION: Elbow dislocation accounts 3-6% of all pediatric elbow injuries. Medial epicondyle is the most common fracture related to the elbow dislocation in pediatric population. About 15-18% of medial epicondyle fractures related to dislocation present with the incarceration of medial epicondyle in the elbow joint after reduction. This situation is the only absolute surgical indication for epicondyle fracture in this population.
CASE REPORT: A 15-year-old male children admitted to the emergency department with swelling, pain, and limitation of elbow range of motion after falling off a ho…

BACKGROUND: Throwing-related shoulder and elbow injuries are common among collegiate baseball pitchers; however, prospective evidence on scapulothoracic (ST) joint function as a risk factor is limited. This study prospectively investigated whether ST joint stability was associated with throwing-related injuries.
METHODS: Twenty-seven collegiate pitchers were prospectively categorized into injury and noninjury groups during the 12-month follow-up. Scapular and trunk positional coordinates were recorded using a 3D scanner during preseason screening under 2 conditions: (1) 90° scapularplane abdu…

Primary care and sports medicine physicians will undoubtedly encounter upper-extremity injuries on a regular basis in their practice. Athletes have injuries most commonly to the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand as a result of a fall onto an outstretched arm. This article aims to educate physicians about sports-related upper-extremity injuries. Common mechanisms of injury, classic physical examination, and radiographic findings are reviewed. General guidelines for treatment as well as indications for referral to a sports medicine or orthopedic specialist are included in the discussion.

The biceps brachii plays an integral role in movement of the shoulder and elbow, and pathology can occur in athletes of all ages. Injuries of the proximal biceps tendon can be seen in overhead athletes as a result of chronic impingement, tendon instability, or tensile overload, often with accompanying lesions of the labrum or rotator cuff. Presentation may be insidious or can be precipitated by an acute event. Injuries to the distal biceps are more common in athletes involved in strength training such as weightlifters, or occasionally in contact sports. Although injury to the proximal and dist

Maxillofacial injuries sustained playing sports are becoming increasingly common, and in the UK where football is the most popular team sport, associated maxillofacial injuries are a regular occurrence. This study retrospectively examined data on patients who were referred with facial injuries sustained playing football between 2007 and 2019 (n = 265). Demographics, mechanism of injury, diagnosis, and treatment received were analysed. The mean (SD) age was 25 (11.0) years (range 3-85) and there was a strong male predominance (n = 256, 97% male). Facial fractures were diagnosed in 143 (54%) pat

BACKGROUND: Simple elbow dislocations are common injuries; however, the comprehensive magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) injury patterns remain incompletely understood. This systematic review aimed to determine the prevalence and patterns of soft tissue and acute traumatic osteochondral injuries on MRI following simple elbow dislocations.
METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed and Scopus databases from 2000-2025 using a validated search strategy. Studies reporting MRI findings in adult or predominantly adult simple elbow dislocation cohorts were included. Quality assessment used the Newcast

BACKGROUND: The treatment of radial neck fractures is controversial and typically depends on displacement. Surgical procedures based on open reduction-internal fixation (ORIF) may lead to several complications, such as avascular necrosis of the radial head, nonunion, malunion, and elbow stiffness. Closed reduction with intramedullary pinning of radial neck fractures, which is commonly used in children, is a viable option for these fractures in adults and may allow for a lower complication rate compared with ORIF. The aim of this study was to report the functional outcome of closed reduction an

The range of injuries sustained at an ice-rink and presented to an Accident Service department is described. A total of 203 patients with 222 injuries presented themselves during a 2-month period. There were 103 noteworthy injuries, including 61 fractures, 2 dislocations and 2 severed tendons, but the commonest injuries were wounds, sprains and bruises. Beginners appear to be more prone to injury than experienced skaters. In addition to using well-fitting skate-boots to protect the ankle, some injuries could be avoided by wearing elbow and knee pads, and a thick pair of gloves. The number of i

Although fractures of the elbow are extremely common in pediatric patients, the T-type distal humerus fracture is rare and offers unique challenges. The mechanism of injury may be similar to the adult counterpart and is usually caused by a fall onto a flexed elbow or from a direct blow. Diagnosing these injuries may be difficult. They often resemble extension-type supracondylar fractures, yet the treatment algorithm is quite different. In younger patients, percutaneous pinning remains a viable option, but for older adolescents, open reduction and internal fixation provides stable fixation at t

Radial head fractures are the most common fractures in the elbow, and the treatment of nondisplaced fractures is often straightforward. However, radial head fractures with concurrent injury to the elbow stabilizers may require complex treatment and therapy that are targeted at specifically restoring elbow stability. This treatment of complex radial head fractures has recently improved because of long-term follow-up studies, increased biomechanical research on elbow stability, and improved surgical techniques. With an open line of communication between the surgeon and the therapist, an appropri

The indications for physiotherapy after supracondylar humeral fractures in children are not clear in the literature, even in the presence of an active or passive limitation of elbow joint motion. The authors therefore performed a prospective randomized study to assess the effectiveness of physiotherapy in improving the elbow range of motion after such fractures. The authors studied two groups of 21 and 22 children with supracondylar humeral fractures Felsenreich types II and III, all without associated neurovascular deficits. All children were treated by open reduction and internal fixation wi

Disorders of elbow extension occur following traumatic or neurologic injuries of the triceps muscle. Restoration of elbow extension is an integral part of the entire upper extremity surgical reconstruction to improve the following daily activities: bringing down an object from above, handwriting, using the hand in the supine position, steering a wheelchair, driving a car, and swimming. The transfer of the posterior head of the deltoid muscle to triceps (Moberg procedure) and the transfer of the biceps to triceps (Friedenberg procedure) are previously described procedures for the functional res

The overhead throwing motion generates enormous force in the elbow. Repetitive near failure loads lead to chronic adaptive changes and occasionally acute injury. The physician caring for the thrower must understand the complex anatomy and function of the elbow joint, along with the biomechanics of throwing, to accurately diagnose and treat elbow pathology. Evaluation of elbow pain in the throwing athlete must begin with a thorough and detailed throwing history including duration of symptoms, location of pain, timing during the phases of throwing motion, and associated symptoms. Physical examin
