Electrical stimulation enhances the acetylcholine receptors available for neuromuscular junction formation.

UNLABELLED: Neuromuscular junctions (NMJ) are specialized synapses that link motor neurons with muscle fibers. These sites are fundamental to human muscle activity, controlling swallowing and breathing amongst many other vital functions. Study of this synapse formation is an essential area in neuroscience; the understanding of how neurons interact and control their targets during development and regeneration are fundamental questions. Existing data reveals that during initial stages of development neurons target and form synapses driven by biophysical and biochemical cues, and during later sta

Upper limb functional electrical stimulation devices and their man-machine interfaces.

Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) is a technique that uses electricity to activate the nerves of a muscle that is paralysed due to hemiplegia, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease or spinal cord injury (SCI). FES has been widely used to restore upper limb functions in people with hemiplegia and C5-C7 tetraplegia and has improved their ability to perform their activities of daily living (ADL). At the time of writing, a detailed literature review of the existing upper limb FES devices and their man-machine interfaces (MMI) showed that only the NESS H200 was commercially available. Howev

On the use of fixed-intensity functional electrical stimulation for attenuating essential tremor.

A great proportion of essential tremor (ET) patients have not so far been able to receive functional benefits from traditional therapies. In this regard, the use of functional electrical stimulation (FES) has been proposed for reducing tremor amplitude by stimulating muscles in antiphase with respect to the trembling motion. Although some studies have reported success in terms of tremor attenuation, drawbacks still exist that prevent the method from being used in real-life applications. In this article, we explore an alternative approach: a strategy based on the hypothesis that FES-induced con

Online tremor suppression using electromyography and low-level electrical stimulation.

Tremor is one of the most prevalent movement disorders. There is a large proportion of patients (around 25%) in whom current treatments do not attain a significant tremor reduction. This paper proposes a tremor suppression strategy that detects tremor from the electromyographic signals of the muscles from which tremor originates and counteracts it by delivering electrical stimulation to the antagonist muscles in an out of phase manner. The detection was based on the iterative Hilbert transform and stimulation was delivered above the motor threshold (motor stimulation) and below the motor thres

Ultrasound and electrical nerve stimulation-guided S1 nerve root block.

A selective lumbosacral nerve root block is generally is performed under X-ray fluoroscopy, which has the disadvantage of radiation exposure and the need for fluoroscopy equipment. In this study, we assessed the effectiveness of ultrasound and nerve stimulation-guided S1 nerve root block on 37 patients with S1 radicular syndrome. With the patient in a prone position, an ultrasound scan was performed by placing the probe parallel to the body axis. The needle was pointed slightly medial from the lateral side of the probe and advanced toward a hyperechoic area in the sacral foramina with ultrasou
