Where lymphatic filariasis has diminished since about the 1950s, it has most frequently, though not always, been a direct result of chemotherapeutic intervention against the parasite. Diethylcarbamazine (DEC), a well-established drug, has been the single agent of chemotherapeutic control and has been successful in a wide variety of regimens. This paper reviews the experience with one strategy: long-term, low-dose treatment through DEC-medicated common salt. Diethylcarbamazine-medicated salt played a major role in the Chinese filariasis control program and has been successful in more limited tr

The prevalence, intensity and the frequency distribution of microfilaria (mf) of Wuchereria bancrofti in the human blood and their variation in time (pre-vector control, control and post control periods) and space have been examined. The prevalence and intensity showed significant variation between time and different areas of urban Pondicherry. The significant reduction in the prevalence and intensity of microfilaremia in the areas of high endemicity indicated that the effect of vector control was well marked in these areas. The distribution of microfilaria in human population was adequately d

A case of nodular lesion of the breast in a 37 year old female caused by filariasis is described. The case is instructive since the diagnosis was made by fine-needle aspiration cytology.

The breast is not a frequent site of filarial infection. We report a case of fine needle aspiration cytologic diagnosis of filariasis of the breast, not previously reported.

The melanization response of two mosquito against Wuchereria bancrofti was studied under different conditions of temperatures, adult age and feeding regimes. The two mosquito species were Culex pipiens, a susceptible species for W. bancrofti transmission and Aedes Caspius, a refractory one.

A case of polymyositis associated with Bancroftian filariasis in an adult male who presented with generalised painful swelling and weakness of muscles is presented. He had elevated muscle enzymes, a myopathic EMG pattern, focal vasculitis on gastrocnemius muscle biopsy and W. bancrofti in the peripheral blood. There was clinical, biochemical and histopathological evidence of resolution of the disorder and total clearance of microfilaremia with diethyl carbamazine (DEC) therapy.

The experiments were carried out under the controlled conditions with temperature at 26 +/- 1 degree C and relative humidity 75-85%. The Brugian microfilariae from the peritoneal cavity of Mongolian jirds, mixed with rabbit blood, were ingested by Anopheles mosquitoes through the artificial membrane. The experimental data show that the number of microfilariae ingested is fewer than would be expected from the microfilarial densities in the blood meal. The linear regression shows their quantitative relation, Y = 0.61X-1.37. At the same time the host efficiency of Anopheles sinensis decreases wit

A pilot study for control of bancroftian filariasis through detection and treatment of microfilaria (mf) carriers and filaria disease cases with Diethylcarbamazine (DEC) undertaken in the rural areas of Srikakulam and Vizianagaram of Andhra Pradesh showed that this chemotherapeutic method of control of filaria in rural areas is feasible and acceptable to society. During first round of detection and treatment 20,300 mf carriers (90.6 per cent of detected) and 6,588 disease persons (86 per cent of detected) in Srikakulam and 7,097 mf carriers (94.8 per cent of detected) and 1,436 disease persons

Studies on larval population densities and adult emergence rates of the Brugian filariasis vectors Mansonia bonneae Edwards and Ma. dives Schiner were conducted in freshwater swamp forest bordering the Sadong River, Serian District, Sarawak, East Malaysia, during 1984-85. Three species of aquatic host-plants in the Family Araceae were identified as supporting immature stages of the Ma. bonneae/dives complex. Proportions of positive plants were 4.7%, 6.5% and 3.4% with 6.4 +/- 2.6, 7.3 +/- 2.8 and 10.1 +/- 1.1 larvae per positive plant, respectively, for the plant species Homalomena cordata Sch

The longevity and periodicity of microfilaremia were examined in the jird infected with Brugia malayi to be used for assessing the filaricides. Jirds 4 to 6 weeks old were inoculated subcutaneously with 100 to 200 infective larvae of B. malayi. Microfilariae were present in 75 out of 94 jirds observed over 3 years and high microfilaremia, with 10 mf/microliters or higher, developed in 43 out of 75 jirds. Such a high level of microfilaremia was necessary for narrowing the variation of microfilaria counts among the blood samples. The microfilaria negative jirds, 4 months after inoculation, were

Of 58 patients in Leogane, Haiti, infected with Wuchereria bancrofti and treated with diethylcarbamazine citrate (DEC-C) at 6 mg/kg per day for 12 days (= 72 mg/kg), 38 (66%) of 58 continued to harbor low numbers of circulating microfilariae (median microfilariae could be demonstrated in 7 (37%) of 19 patients, with a median microfilarial density of 8 mf/ml. Three patients who continued to have circulating microfilariae after two courses of DEC-C were treated a third time. Two (67%) of the three remained microfilaria positive, both with 1 mf/ml. The results of this study clearly indicate that

The time-course of the detection of circulating and urinary filarial antigens was followed with a 2S-IRMA assay, using a mouse monoclonal antibody raised against Brugia malayi larvae, in Mastomys natalensis experimentally infected with Brugia malayi, Brugia pahangi, or Litomosoides carinii. In the prepatent phase of the infections, filarial antigen was detected 4-7 weeks before microfilariae appeared in the peripheral blood. Moreover, the sensitivity of the test was greater with urine than with serum. During the patent phase of infection, the level of circulating antigens detected varied consi

Jirds were vaccinated by three to five subcutaneous (SC) injections of infective larvae of Brugia pahangi which had been irradiated at 25, 45 or 90 krads from a 60Co source. They were challenged either SC or intraperitoneally. Vaccination with four doses of 50 larvae irradiated with 25 krads produced 49.3% resistance to IP challenge worms and 39.8% against SC challenge worms. Five doses of larvae irradiated with 45 krads produced 62% resistance to SC challenge. Three doses of larvae irradiated with 90 krads produced 74.9% resistance to SC challenge and five doses produced 76.2% resistance. The

The mortality of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes increased; immediately following a blood meal containing microfilariae of Brugia pahangi, when infective larvae began to migrate out of the flight muscles and when infective larvae were lost from the mosquitoes during a blood meal. When infective mosquitoes took a second blood meal 86.2% of the infective larvae escaped from their bodies. However, only 50.3% escaped when mosquitoes fed through a thin layer of cotton. Infective larvae in the abdomen of the mosquitoes stood the least chance of escaping from the insects. When infective mosquitoes were offe

Lymph thrombi in cats experimentally-infected with Brugia malayi were examined by scanning electron microscopy. A variety of morphological forms were noted and it appeared that thrombi undergo a maturation process characterized by at least three transitional phases. Initially, the thrombus consists of erythrocytes encased in fibrin (Phase I). Phase II thrombi are characterized by the appearance of phagocytic cells and fibroblasts on the surface of the thrombus. At the end of the maturation process, the thrombus surface consists solely of fibroblasts or endothelial cells, perhaps derived from t
