In the present work a practical claim substantiation study is shown by the example of 5 commercially available body lotions. Their efficacy with respect to effects on transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and stratum corneum (SC) hydration of ageing skin has been examined. Results were obtained after single and repeated application (14 days, 2 x a day). The best performing product was then selected and further tested for its potential effects on sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS)-damaged skin. This was done in a younger population and the recovery of the impaired barrier function was followed by TEWL meas

Itching is a prominent clinical manifestation of sensitive skin; it reduces cutaneous barrier function, mainly caused by dryness. Scratching to relieve itching destroys the skin barrier, thus forming the itch-scratch cycle that results in additional disruption of skin barrier and chronic itching. Treatment involves alleviation from itching for sensitive skin. Recently, substance P (11-amino acid neuropeptide of the tachykinin family) and neurokinin 1 receptor (NK1R) have been considered to provide a key pathway to treat chronic itching. A single-center, open-label study was conducted comprisin

BACKGROUND: Infantile seborrhoeic dermatitis (ISD) is a chronic, inflammatory, scaling skin condition, which causes redness and a greasy scaling rash in infants and young children. It can last from weeks to months, but rarely years. When it occurs on the scalp, it is referred to as 'cradle cap'. While benign and self-limiting, irrelevant of its location on the body, it can distress parents. The effectiveness of commonly promoted treatments is unclear.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of interventions for infantile seborrhoeic dermatitis in children from birth to 24 months of age.

Juvenile localized scleroderma includes different conditions characterized by skin hardening with increased collagen deposition. Although juvenile localized scleroderma is considered a relatively benign disease, lesions may extend through the dermis, subcutaneous tissue, muscles, and the underlying bone, leading to significant functional and cosmetic deformities. Furthermore, extracutaneous manifestations are described. We retrospectively analyzed a cohort of 26 patients with severe Juvenile localized scleroderma with particular attention to clinical features, therapy, and long-term outcome. A

Often barrier creams (BC) do not fulfil their protecting behaviour, even when promised by the manufacturers. Therefore, it is of great importance to develop standardized in vivo techniques to prove the potency of BC in humans. In the present study, 3 promising techniques for the analysis of BC were evaluated: laser scanning microscopy, laser doppler flowmetry, and the tape-stripping procedure. Sodium fluorescein and glycerol trinitrate acted as hydrophilic model-penetrating substances. By means of these methods, 3 different BC were tested and compared for their potency. The investigations show

A 64-year-old man developed an allergic contact dermatitis while using an expired sorbolene cream. Patch tests to the product ingredients were all negative. Repeated open application test to the expired product produced a strong reaction while an identical-brand non-expired product did not elicit a reaction, suggesting the presence of an unidentified degradation product or compound, acting as an allergen in the expired product. This case is intriguing in that it contrasts the ubiquitous use of over-the-counter topical agents with the exceedingly low incidence of contact dermatitis to expired t

For decades benzoin has been used to enhance the "stickiness" of the skin for improved adherence complementing the protective and functional aspects of well-constructed surgical bandages/dressings. The fully adherent and longer-lasting pressure dressing is both aesthetically pleasing to the patient (and surgeon) and, at the same time, functions to decrease seroma or hematoma formation, enhances antisepsis by blocking transient bacterial contamination, and inhibits traumatic sabotage of surgical wounds due to patient overactivity or inadvertent collision with a door jam, car door, table leg, or

BACKGROUND: Different symptoms are associated with atopic skin, including dryness, pruritus and pain, and affect patients' quality of life. The environment, microbiota, epidermis, immune and nerve cells are all implicated in the pathogenesis of atopic skin. Staphylococcus aureus is the focus of particular attention. Epidermis is implicated at multiple levels: inflammatory process, barrier, control of moisture and water loss. Sensory neurons that participate in cutaneous neurogenic inflammation and pruritus are seen as a potential new target. Specific management strategies and new treatments fo

Atopic dermatitis, or eczema, is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects 223 million people worldwide. Honey is used to treat eczema due to its emollient, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties when applied topically. However, its stickiness can negatively impact patient compliance with treatment. In this study, we incorporated Brazilian multifloral honey into natural rubber latex (NRL) dressings to reduce its adhesive properties. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy demonstrated that honey was weakly bound to NRL. Stereoscopic images revealed homogeneous surfaces without pores for

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin available from food and sun exposure. Vitamin D receptors are present in cells throughout the body and cause it to act like a hormone. Observational studies document the association of low vitamin D levels with multiple health conditions. This article reviews the evidence for vitamin D in prevention and treatment in primary care. METHODS: We performed a literature review of randomized controlled trials, meta-analyses, systematic reviews, and large prospective trials looking at the role of vitamin D deficiency in the most common conditions seen in primary care

BACKGROUND: Retinoids are the mainstay of topical therapy for acne. To improve the efficacy and minimize the side effects of retinoids, various novel drug delivery mechanisms, including nanoparticles, have been developed.
AIM: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of a retinaldehyde-loaded niosome (RA-N) nanoemulsion against sebum secretion and keratinization on mild-to-moderate acne.
PATIENTS/METHODS: Twenty-three participants exhibiting mild-to-moderate acne with both closed and open comedones were included. They applied a 0.05% RA-N nanoemulsion daily for 4 weeks, did not to use any other e

Alzheimer's disease is a chronic neurodegenerative disorder resulting in part from the degeneration of cholinergic neurons in the brain. Rivastigmine, a cholinesterase inhibitor, is commonly used as a treatment for dementia due to its ability to moderate cholinergic neurotransmission; however, treatment with oral rivastigmine can lead to gastrointestinal adverse effects such as nausea and vomiting. Transdermal administration of rivastigmine can minimize these adverse effects by providing continuous delivery of the medication, while maintaining the effectiveness of the oral treatment. While the
