Selective attention to facial emotion and identity in children with autism: evidence for global identity and local emotion.

The present study sought to test the global-identity and local-emotion processing hypothesis in face perception by examining emotional interference in face perception in children with high-functioning autism/Asperger's syndrome. Participants judged either the expression or the identity of faces while identity/expression was either held constant or varied (Garner paradigm). The results revealed that emotional expressions interfered with identity processing in face perception for autism spectrum disorder individuals. Taken together with previous findings, our results suggest that emotion judgmen

Do autism spectrum disorders differ from each other and from non-spectrum disorders on emotion recognition tests?

We tested whether dimensional measures of empathic ability, theory of mind, and intelligence would differentiate autism spectrum disorders from each other and from non-spectrum disorders. Tests were administered to children with a diagnosis of Autistic Disorder (AutD; n = 20), Asperger's Disorder (AspD; n = 28), Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (Inattentive Type) (ADHD; n = 35), Mental Retardation (Mild) (MR; n = 34), Anxiety Disorder (AnxD; n = 14), or No Psychological Disorder (NPD; n = 36). Results showed that empathic ability discriminated among groups on the autism spectrum (AutD

Affect Recognition, Theory of Mind, and Empathy in Preschool Children with Externalizing Behavior Problems-A Group Comparison and Developmental Psychological Consideration.

Preschool mental disorders are often associated with significant interpersonal problems, related to impaired affect recognition, theory of mind (ToM), and empathy. To date, these skills have not been studied together in preschoolers with externalizing behavior problems (EBPs). The aim of the present study was to investigate whether and to what extent preschool children with EBPs show impairments in affect recognition, ToM, and empathy. Preschoolers with EBPs, defined by current psychiatric treatment and T-scores ≥ 60 on the externalizing problem scale of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL/1½-5

Evaluation of cognitive impairment in a French sample of patients with restrictive anorexia nervosa: two distinct profiles emerged with differences in impaired functions and psychopathological symptoms.

PURPOSE: The cognitive profiles of patients suffering from anorexia nervosa (AN) are currently explored as potential facilitating and/or maintenance factors. Specific data in restrictive AN (AN-R) remain contradictory. This study focused on women with AN-R to evaluate their cognitive functions to develop a more specific cognitive remediation program. METHODS: Female patients older than 15 years who were suffering from AN-R were recruited in a specialized unit for eating disorder management. Female healthy control (HC) participants were recruited who were matched with AN patients on age. All p

Working memory and the identification of facial expression in patients with left frontal glioma.

Patients with brain tumors may have cognitive dysfunctions including memory deterioration, such as working memory, that affect quality of life. This study was to explore the presence of defects in working memory and the identification of facial expressions in patients with left frontal glioma. This case-control study recruited 11 matched pairs of patients and healthy control subjects (mean age ± standard deviation, 37.00 ± 10.96 years vs 36.73 ± 11.20 years; 7 male and 4 female) from March through December 2011. The psychological tests contained tests that estimate verbal/visual-spatial workin

Continuity and change from early childhood to adolescence in autism.

BACKGROUND: This longitudinal study of 48 children diagnosed with autism at 2-5 years of age was designed to test the hypothesis that diagnosis would remain stable for most of the sample but that there would be improvements in symptom severity, adaptive behavior, and emotional responsiveness in adolescence. METHODS: A sample of children with autism assessed in both early and middle childhood were observed in late adolescence with the Autism Diagnostic Observation Scale (ADOS) and their parents were administered the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R) and the Vineland Adaptive Behavior

The virtual personality model: Toward a dynamic structured motivational systems framework for understanding personality disorders.

Dissatisfaction with the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (2022) spurred attempts to reconceptualize personality disorders (PDs): But reconciling reconceptualizations is challenging. The Virtual Personality Model (VPM) may fill this gap, affording an integration of more static Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology and maladaptive trait models with a dynamic, interpersonal approach. VPM is implemented as a "runnable" computational model that treats personality as emergent from dynamic, structured motivational systems with person-specific parameter values (e.g., sensitivi

A protocol for a randomized-controlled trial to investigate the effect of infant sign training on the speech-language development in young children born with cleft palate.

BACKGROUND: Children born with a cleft palate with or without cleft lip (CP ± L) are known to be at risk for speech-language disorders that impact educational and social-emotional growth. It is hypothesized that speech-language intervention delivered before the age of 3 years could decrease the impact of CP ± L on speech-language development. Infant sign training in combination with verbal input expands the natural communication of young children including multimodal speech-language input (i.e., verbal and manual input) via caregivers who act as co-therapists. AIMS: To determine the effective

Adaptive voice interaction as a cognitive regulation mechanism during second-language listening: The roles of learner agency and listening anxiety.

The increasing integration of artificial intelligence into learning environments has created new opportunities to examine how adaptive technologies influence fundamental psychological processes underlying language learning. This Study investigated whether learner-controlled voice interaction functions as a cognitive regulation mechanism that enhances second-language (L2) listening performance while reducing listening anxiety through greater learner agency and more efficient cognitive processing. A sequential explanatory mixed-methods design was employed with 57 Chinese university students lear

Nurse-led digital triage and health literacy navigation: redefining the front door of public health in the artificial intelligence era.

Artificial intelligence (AI)-driven digital triage is fast becoming the front door of public health systems worldwide. As algorithms take over symptom assessment and risk stratification, however, nurses risk being reduced to validators of machine output, and patients with limited health literacy risk being left behind. This perspective argues that nurses should not merely adapt to AI triage but redefine their role as "health literacy navigators," positioned between algorithmic risk stratification and the patient who must act on it. We outline four functions that define the role: interpretation

Data-driven vestibular fMRI in PPPD and residual dizziness after BPPV: a narrative methodological review of AI-based phenotyping and longitudinal modeling.

Neuroimaging studies of vertigo and chronic dizziness have identified abnormalities across vestibular, visual, somatosensory, and cognitive-emotional networks, but conventional group-level analyses are limited in capturing individual heterogeneity and longitudinal change. This narrative methodological review integrates current evidence and proposes a framework combining functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), artificial intelligence (AI), and advanced statistical modeling, anchored in two priority research scenarios: PPPD phenotyping and longitudinal characterization of residual dizzines

Exploring the dynamics of enjoyment in traditional and ChatGPT-assisted L2 Writing: A complex dynamic systems theory-based multiple case study.

The recent emergence of generative artificial intelligence has been transforming traditional writing practices, leading to new patterns of emotional experience among learners in the writing process. Drawing on Complex Dynamic Systems Theory, this study investigated the dynamic trajectories of enjoyment experienced by four Chinese undergraduate EFL learners across two types of writing tasks: one completed in a traditional context and the other with ChatGPT's assistance. Adopting an idiodynamic approach, this study traced the moment-to-moment fluctuations of enjoyment in the two writing contexts

AI Chatbot Dependence as an Indirect Link Between Social Anxiety and Psychological Resilience: The Moderating Role of Perceived Social Support.

Generative artificial intelligence has transformed AI chatbots into systems that can provide information, emotional feedback, and social interaction. Although prior research has examined AI adoption, trust, and continuance intention, less is known about sustained reliance on AI chatbots and its relationship with psychological adaptation. Drawing on an integrated compensation-resource framework, this study examined whether social anxiety was indirectly associated with psychological resilience through AI chatbot dependence and whether this association varied across levels of perceived social sup

Protecting Patient Information in Healthcare.

This paper considers the connection between fairness and unfairness from a theoretical standpoint, highlighting the importance of critically evaluating the potential impact of artificial intelligence (AI) tools on patients' perception of healthcare justice. The arguments and analysis are framed within the context of Hannah Arendt's concept of the 'banality of evil' and Miranda Fricker's concept of 'epistemic injustice'. The article suggests that the greatest threat to fairness and transparency when it comes to AI may not be people deliberately trying to cause harm, but rather a widespread cult
