AIM: To examine emotional characteristics, especially personality profile, of patients with dystonia.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Three hundred patients with dystonia were enrolled in the study. Control groups consisted of 50 healthy individuals and 62 patients with hemifacial spasm (GFS). HADS, Beck depression inventory and Spielberger-Khanin anxiety scale were used. The 16 Personality Factors Questionnaire (16PF) was used to study personality profile.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Higher levels of anxiety and depression in patients with dystonia compared to the control groups were identified. The leve

Twitter and other microblogs have rapidly become a significant mean of information propagation in today's web. Understanding the main factors that make certain pieces of information spread quickly in these platforms has emerged as a popular topic. Therefore, as a simple yet powerful way of disseminating useful information, retweeting has attracted much interest. Existing methods for retweets have been conducted for analyzing the social network structure, or understanding the retweeting mechanism. However, little attention is paid to whether users' emotion will affect users' retweeting behavior

PURPOSE: Aim of the study is to evaluate the predictive power of Expressed Emotion in Schizophrenia relapse in Pakistan.
METHOD: A longitudinal study was conducted comprising 53 in-patients' sample diagnosed with Schizophrenia and their 101 key carers. Participants fulfilled DSM-IV-TR criteria for Schizophrenia based on Structural Clinical Interview for the DSM-IV diagnosis. Symptomatic status was measured through Brief Psychiatric Rating Scales-Expanded (BPRS-E). Caregivers' level of EE was assessed through Camberwell Family Interview (CFI). Patients were followed up for 9 months after hospi

Emotion regulation is closely related to mental health in children and adults. Low emotion regulation competencies have been found in school-aged sexually abused girls. The aim of the present study was to investigate emotion regulation competencies in sexually abused preschool girls and boys using a multi-informant approach. Emotion regulation was assessed in 62 sexually abused and 65 non-abused preschoolers using the Emotion Regulation Checklist and the MacArthur Story Stem Battery. Both parents and educators reported lower emotion regulation competencies in sexually abused preschoolers, espe

Abuse is a complex psychosocial issue with multiple implications. This paper takes a look at the physical and psychological manifestations of domestic violence, i.e. between adult (romantic) partners as well as abuse of the elderly. Past studies have looked at the relationship between emotional dependency, the occurence and sustainability of abuse and the likehood that a victimized person will terminate a relationship. Indeed, individuals with Dependent Personality Disorder (DPD) or with dependent characteristics present a higher risk of becoming abusive (both physically and mentally) as well

Total sleep deprivation (TSD) has been consistently found to impair encoding of information during ensuing wakefulness, probably through suppressing NonREM (non-rapid eye movement) sleep. However, a possible contribution of missing REM sleep to this encoding impairment after TSD has so far not been systematically examined in humans, although such contribution might be suspected in particular for emotional information. Here, in two separate experiments in young healthy men, we compared effects of TSD and of selective REM sleep deprivation (REMD), relative to respective control conditions of und

Chronic pain which had become a major public health problem, is always accompanied with emotional and cognitive disorders. These comorbidities are circular and auto generated as in low back pain or in somatoform pain as fibromyalgia. Cerebral imagery of pain show the superposition of emotional and cognitive circuits especially in frontal regions from where come the descending control of pain. Therefore common areas regulate the three functions. Consequences on semiology and treatment of chronic pain are discussed.

PRINCIPLES: Patients with carotid artery stenosis (CAS) are at risk of ipsilateral stroke and chronic compromise of cerebral blood flow. It is under debate whether the hypo-perfusion or embolism in CAS is directly related to cognitive impairment. Alternatively, CAS may be a marker for underlying risk factors, which themselves influence cognition. We aimed to determine cognitive performance level and the emotional state of patients with CAS. We hypothesised that patients with high grade stenosis, bilateral stenosis, symptomatic patients and/or those with relevant risk factors would suffer impai

The goal of this study was to examine associations between dimensions of emotion dysregulation and eating disorder (ED) symptoms in bulimia nervosa (BN). This investigation used baseline data from a BN treatment study that included 80 adults (90% women) with full or subthreshold BN. Participants completed the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) and the Eating Disorders Examination interview. The Eating Disorders Examination global score was significantly correlated with the DERS total score, as well as several DERS subscales: nonacceptance, impulse and strategies. Further, the DERS

Previous studies have shown that sleep loss has a detrimental effect on the ability of the individuals to process emotional information. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that this negative effect extends to the ability of experiencing emotions while observing other individuals, i.e. emotional empathy. To test this hypothesis, we assessed emotional empathy in 37 healthy volunteers who were assigned randomly to one of three experimental groups: one group was tested before and after a night of total sleep deprivation (sleep deprivation group), a second group was tested before and after a u…

In our clinical practice, we are often faced with emotional difficulties of transplanted patients. Most are due to anxiety, difficulty in integrating newly recruited organ as its own, feeling of guilt, and difficulties with personal experience of self. Despite common presence of emotional difficulties, many studies describe improvement in the quality of life of transplant patients. However, the quality of life is deteriorating again in case of transplant rejection. In such situations, restlessness develops along with losing control over their own lives, a sense of failure, hopelessness and lac

Vocal changes in emotional situations may identify contributing factors in behavioral voice disorders and direct more efficient therapies. Finding appropriate measures of voicing that detect emotional conditions is a first step in this line of investigation. The purpose of this study was to determine whether electroglottography (EGG) contact quotient is a viable measure to detect vocal changes in different emotion states. Vocal responses in 18 vocally healthy participants were measured using EGG contact quotient during picture viewing from the International Affective Picture System. Results de

A central flaw in models of anosognosia is to consider metacognitive awareness and affective regulation and responsiveness as separate functional modular subsystems. This line of reasoning leads to an "either or" conceptualization of the probable causes of implicit awareness in anosognosic patients. Neuroscience research and clinical observations of patients suggest that anosognosia is often associated with a change in the affective status of the individual as well as a change in their explicit verbal descriptions of themselves. Studying anosognosic patients over time and including measures of

Despite the inextrica … namic interaction between emotional valence and learning rate highlights the crucial role played by emotions in biological agents' adaptation to unexpected changes in their world.

OBJECTIVE: The present study sought to investigate emotion regulation strategies in people with anorexia nervosa (AN) and whether the theoretical concept of 'emotion coupling' between anger and disgust could help to explain some of the specific eating disorder symptomatology in people with AN.
METHOD: This 'emotion coupling' hypothesis was tested using a mood induction procedure within laboratory conditions, where individuals with AN (n = 22) were matched with control participants (n = 19). Participants completed a bank of different measures prior to the study, and these included measures of

It has been suggested that the safety benefits of bicycle helmets are limited by risk compensation. The current article tests if previous helmet use influences the response to helmets as a safety intervention. This was investigated in a field experiment where pace and psychophysiological load were measured. We found that after having removed their helmets, routine helmet users cycled more slowly and demonstrated increased psychophysiological load. However, for non-users there was no significant change in either cycling behaviour or psychophysiological load. We discuss the implications of these
