BACKGROUND: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NE), which is common in premature babies, has been associated with lung damage. Our aim is to explore the effect of enterally administered extra virgin olive oil (EO) with rich polyphenol content on clinical parameters, histopathological score, Transforming growt factor beta-1 (TGFβ1), Caspase 3 and Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in NE-related lung injury of neonatal rats.
METHODS: Three groups (control, NE, NE+EO) were created, with 8 neonatal rats in each group. NE was induced by hypoxia-hyperoxia-hypothermia and formula feeding. EO was given to the trea

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a devastating intestinal disease primarily affecting preterm infants. This study aimed to explore the efficacy of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) combined with quorum-sensing molecule autoinducer-2 (AI-2) in a neonatal mouse model of NEC.
METHODS: NEC was induced in neonatal mice, which were then randomly assigned to the NEC or treatment groups (NEC + AI-2, NEC + LGG, and NEC + LGG + AI-2), with uninduced mice as control group. Disease severity, intestinal barrier integrity, inflammatory responses, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), gut microbi

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is associated with increased neurodevelopmental impairment. Gut-brain interactions through the brainstem may be central to NEC-related microglia-driven neuroinflammation. Heparin-binding epidermal growth factor-like growth factor (HB-EGF) has intestinal protective properties and is a potential therapy for NEC. The aim of this study is to test the hypothesis that HB-EGF in pregnant rats reduces both NEC incidence and proinflammatory changes in the brainstem microglia of newborn rats.
METHODS: We compared four experimental groups, HB-EGF+/NEC-, HB-EGF

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) develops through exaggerated toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) signaling in the intestinal epithelium. Breast milk is rich in non-digestible oligosaccharides and prevents NEC through unclear mechanisms. We now hypothesize that the human milk oligosaccharides 2'-fucosyllactose (2'-FL) and 6'-sialyllactose (6'-SL) can reduce NEC through inhibition of TLR4 signaling.
METHODS: NEC was induced in newborn mice and premature piglets and infant formula was supplemented with 2'-FL, 6'-SL, or lactose. Intestinal tissue was obtained at surgical resection. HMO inhibi

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a manifestation of maladaptive intestinal responses in preterm infants centrally medicated by unattenuated inflammation. Early in the postnatal period, preterm infants develop a deficit in arachidonic and docosahexaenoic acid, both potent regulators of inflammation. We hypothesized that the fatty acid composition of parenteral lipid emulsions uniquely induces blood and intestinal fatty acid profiles which, in turn, modifies the risk of NEC development. Forty-two preterm pigs were randomized to receive one of three lipid emulsions containing 100% soybean oil (

Astragaloside IV (AS-IV) is a flavonoid from the plant Astragalus membranaceus (Fisch) Bge that has a wide range of therapeutic effects. The aim of the present study was to examine the effect of AS-IV on rats with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) under oxidative stress and inflammation. Newborn Sprague-Dawley rats were induced with NEC by asphyxia and hypothermia applied on 3 consecutive days. The rats were orally administered AS-IV at 25, 50 and 75 mg/kg for 4 days. The results revealed that AS-IV administration prevented NEC-induced decrease in the concentration of malondialdehyde and myelope

OBJECTIVE: Identify early neonatal and maternal risk factors for development of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in preterm infants receiving an exclusive human milk diet (EHMD).
STUDY DESIGN: Preterm infants who developed NEC stage ≥2 while receiving an EHMD were compared to matched controls who did not develop NEC on the same diet. Predictors of NEC were selected for multiple-predictor logistic regression analysis based on literature or significance in single-predictor models.
RESULTS: A total of 27 cases and 98 controls (mean GA = 27 weeks) were included. Groups did not differ significantl

Exposure to probiotics in early life contributes to host intestinal development and prevention of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). Cronobacter sakazakii (C. sakazakii), an opportunistic pathogen, can cause NEC, bacteremia, and meningitis in neonates, but the research of probiotics against C. sakazakii is limited relative to other enteropathogens. Here, the protective effect and mechanism of a novel probiotic Ligilactobacillus salivarius (L. salivarius) YL20 isolated from breast milk on C. sakazakii-induced intestinal injury were explored by using two in vitro models, including an C. sakazakii-

BACKGROUND: Several clinical trials investigated the effects of enteral lactoferrin supplementation on the prevention of sepsis and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in preterm infants, but the efficacy and safety remain disputed. Therefore, we systematically evaluated the effect of enteral lactoferrin supplementation in preterm infants through a meta‑analysis with trial sequential analysis (TSA).
METHODS: We searched six databases to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that evaluated the effects of lactoferrin supplementation compared with placebo or no intervention in preterm infants

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a disease in neonates, often resulting in death or serious medical or neurodevelopmental complications. The rate of NEC is highest in the smallest babies and many efforts have been tried to reduce the rate of NEC. In neonates born below 1500 grams, the rate of NEC has been significantly reduced with the use of various probiotics. This study examines the impact of routine use of a probiotic, Lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 (BioGaia®), on the rate of NEC in neonates at highest risk for developing NEC, those with birth weight ≤1000 grams.

OBJECTIVE: Extremely low birth weight (ELBW; < or =1000 g) infants with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) or isolated intestinal perforation (IP) are treated surgically with either initial laparotomy or peritoneal drain placement. The only published data comparing these therapies are from small, retrospective, single-center studies that do not address outcomes beyond nursery discharge. The objective of this study was to conduct a prospective, multicenter, observational study to (1) develop a hypothesis about the relative effect of these 2 therapies on risk-adjusted outcomes through 18 to 22 mont

BACKGROUND Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a potentially life-threatening disease that affects the intestine of the neonate, causing necrosis and general inflammation. Treatment consists of feeding cessation and antibiotic therapy. In more severe cases, surgical intervention is necessary. Recently, different NEC models have been used to study the development of novel diagnostic and therapeutic methods. This work modified an experimental NEC model in rat pups by a single exposure of animals to NEC-causing factors and testing the impact of mother's milk on prevalence of the disease. MATERIAL
