Seven cases of listeriosis identified at perinatal autopsy are described. The cases occurred during the time of a 1985 Los Angeles, California, epidemic of listeriosis from suspected food contamination by Listeria monocytogenes. In only one of seven cases were gross pathologic lesions encountered. Microscopic lesions in six cases consisted of rare, localized microabscesses or granuloma-like lesions in multiple organs and contained histiocytes, monocytes, lymphocytes, and polymorphonuclear leukocytes with variable necrosis. One case had no gross or microscopic findings. Organomegaly was uncommo

Parotitis is usually a mild illness infrequently associated with severe complications, such as encephalitis, deafness or orchitis. The early studies of mumps vaccine (1940-1950) led to the development of killed virus preparations, which offered quite weakly protective immunity. Subsequently, attenuated live virus vaccines became available. These vaccines are more immunogenic and can be used mixed with measles and rubella vaccines. The widespread use of mumps vaccine in the United States has caused a dramatic reduction of the disease, with concomitant decrease of its complications. Although thi

The meningococcic meningitis cases which appeared in Ankara in 1973 had ceased by 1976. The monthly distribution of the cases conforms well with the distribution schemes of other countries, where the peak months were the late winter and the early spring months. Beside the peak months some cases were seen throughout the year. Although the peaks disappeared after 1977, a few cases continued to be seen again. In the identification of the aetiological agent, the serogroup B was the predominant (70 cases, 45.5%) and the serogroup A was the next in prevalence (41 cases, 26.6%). When the aetiological

The authors have studied the behaviour of the Immunoglobulins and of the hemoagglutination-inhibiting and complement-fixing antibodies in 9 subjects suffering from a complicated form of parotitis and coming from the same epidemic focus. A considerable movement of antibodies was noticed, while contrary to the findings of other authors, an increase in the IgA was not evident.

Some provisional data are given of the polio-epidemic in The Netherlands in 1978. Contrary to previous outbreaks, the present epidemic did not only affect areas with low vaccination acceptance rates, cases were also reported from many municipalities with acceptance rates of 90% and over. The epidemic caused by type 1 started mid-April 1978 in the centre of the country. Up to 1st November 110 cases were reported from a belt running from South-West (Zeeland) to North-East (Overijssel). Only one death occurred among the 80 paralyzed cases. The epidemic exclusively struck a population of some Prot

Forty-seven men on the Isthmus of Panama were exposed to histoplasmosis in an old bunker inhabited by bats. The resulting epidemic was studied with serial clinical, serological, and radiological examinations. Thirty-seven (78.7%) of the men showed serological evidence of infection and 26 (70.3%) had symptoms. Incubation periods ranged from 4 to 30 days. A general relationship between severity of illness and degree of exposure was noted. The agar gel diffusion test for precipitin antibodies was more sensitive than the complement-fixation test or slide test in detecting infection with Histoplasm
