Prognosis of Pineal Region Tumors in Children: A Population-Based Study.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to evaluate the prognostic factors and survival outcomes of pediatric patients with pineal region tumors (PRTs) using a large population-based registry. METHODS: We employed a retrospective cohort design, utilizing data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results program, covering the period from 2000 to 2019. We included pediatric patients (ages 0-18) with histologically verified malignant PRTs. To determine prognostic indicators, we conducted survival analyses using Kaplan-Meier methods and Cox proportional hazards models. Furthermore, we constructed a p

Phthalates exposure and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in children: a systematic review of epidemiological literature.

Epidemiological studies have proven that children mental health can be affected by environmental pollutants which are believed to be visible in the form of psychological disorder later in their childhood. Moreover, the effects of children mental health are evidently clear in the case of phthalates which have been observed to increase psychological disorder, specifically attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Hence, the present study aims to conduct a systematic review and provide an overview of the existing literature on the association between urinary phthalate metabolite concentrat

Extracting Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma from Electronic Medical Records for Genetic Association Studies.

Electronic medical records (EMRs) are being widely implemented for use in genetic and genomic studies. As a phenotypic rich resource, EMRs provide researchers with the opportunity to identify disease cohorts and perform genotype-phenotype association studies. The Epidemiologic Architecture for Genes Linked to Environment (EAGLE) study, as part of the Population Architecture using Genomics and Epidemiology (PAGE) I study, has genotyped more than 15,000 individuals of diverse genetic ancestry in BioVU, the Vanderbilt University Medical Center's biorepository linked to a de-identified version of

Study design for the investigation of likely aetiological factors of juvenile osteochondral conditions (JOCC) in foals and yearlings.

The possible aetiology of osteochondrosis and, to a lesser extent, other developmental orthopaedic diseases or juvenile osteochondral conditions (JOCC), has been intensively investigated. However, most studies have focused on single factors of this multi-factorial disorder, or have been conducted under experimental conditions. This paper aims to present and discuss the scientific background of the BOSAC (Breeding, Osteochondral Status and Athletic Career) research program, a multi-factorial investigation on JOCC risk factors in field conditions. The epidemiology of JOCC in horses born in Norma

Immunology in the clinic review series; focus on type 1 diabetes and viruses: the enterovirus link to type 1 diabetes: critical review of human studies.

The hypothesis that under some circumstances enteroviral infections can lead to type 1 diabetes (T1D) was proposed several decades ago, based initially on evidence from animal studies and sero-epidemiology. Subsequently, enterovirus RNA has been detected more frequently in serum of patients than in control subjects, but such studies are susceptible to selection bias and reverse causality. Here, we review critically recent evidence from human studies, focusing on longitudinal studies with potential to demonstrate temporal association. Among seven longitudinal birth cohort studies, the evidence

Prenatal infection and schizophrenia: a review of epidemiologic and translational studies.

An emerging literature from epidemiologic, clinical, and preclinical investigations has provided evidence that gestational exposure to infection contributes to the etiology of schizophrenia. In recent years, these studies have moved from ecologic designs, which ascertain infection based on epidemics in populations, to investigations that have capitalized on reliable biomarkers in individual pregnancies. These studies have documented specific candidate infections that appear to be associated with an elevated risk of schizophrenia. Animal models of maternal immune activation inspired by this wor

Fecundability according to male serum inhibin B--a prospective study among first pregnancy planners.

BACKGROUND: New biological markers of male fecundity are needed for use in large-scale epidemiological studies. We studied the association between male inhibin B and fecundability. METHODS: Four hundred and thirty Danish couples without previous reproductive experience were followed from termination of contraception until pregnancy or for a maximum of six menstrual cycles. At enrolment we obtained semen samples (n = 418) and blood samples to measure reproductive hormones, including inhibin B (n = 343). RESULTS: The fecundability odds ratio for an increment of male inhibin B by 1 log pg/ml wa

The epidemiology of preterm birth.

Secular trends in the prevalence of preterm birth and international comparisons of the rates of preterm birth are difficult to interpret because of differences, both formal and informal, in the registration of extremely preterm births. Accurate estimation of gestational age is another problem in the measurement of preterm birth. Preterm birth is heterogeneous in several ways. It is heterogeneous in terms of the extent to which the birth is preterm (20-27 weeks, 28-31 weeks or 32-36 weeks of gestation); in whether the birth was elective or spontaneous; and among spontaneous idiopathic preterm b

[Comorbidity of substance use with mental disorders].

This contribution reviews the international literature about dual diagnosis, meaning patients who have simultaneously mental health problems and substance use disorders and discusses epidemiology, clinical characteristics, but primarily etiopathogenesis and different treatment models and interventions. The epidemiological data coming from large-scale studies in the general population in USA, Australia and UK demonstrate the close relationship between mental health problems and substance use disorders. Also, the results from Greek research projects support this close relationship, but their res

[Relationship between Myopia and Light Exposure].

Epidemiological studies found that the incidence of myopia was increasing year by year and the age of onset of myopia was showing a trend of affecting increasingly younger children. Reducing the occurrence of myopia and controlling the increase of myopia diopter have always been the focus of research on the prevention and control of myopia. Large randomized controlled clinical trials have found that outdoor activities can effectively reduce the incidence of myopia and delay the progression of myopia. Basic experiments also revealed that there were certain connections between light exposure and

Clinical and epidemiological characteristics of intensive care unit-acquired weakness in Latin America: A scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Intensive care unit-acquired weakness is a condition with a substantial impact on morbidity, mortality, and long-term quality of life. Consolidated evidence on this condition in Latin America remains limited. This gap may be influenced by regional differences in healthcare systems, resource availability, and population characteristics, which restrict a comprehensive understanding of the condition in this context. OBJECTIVES: This scoping review aims to describe and map the evidence on the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of adults hospitalized in intensive care units

The role of air quality and pollution in obstructive sleep apnea: insights from recent studies.

INTRODUCTION: Air pollution is an increasingly important environmental determinant of respiratory health and has emerging relevance for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Although obesity, aging, sex, craniofacial anatomy, and neuromuscular factors remain established contributors to OSA, ambient and indoor pollutants, together with climate-related and meteorological factors, may influence sleep-disordered breathing through multiple biological pathways. This review summarizes recent epidemiological and mechanistic evidence linking environmental exposures with OSA risk, symptoms, and severity. AREA

Unveiling the Research Void: Exploring the Reproductive Effects of PFAS Compounds on Male Health.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) represent an emerging concern for male reproductive health. Epidemiological studies have reported associations between increased PFAS exposure and reduced semen quality parameters, lower sperm counts, and potential alterations in reproductive hormone levels. Toxicology research has revealed possible mechanisms including blood-testis barrier disruption, oxidative stress, interference with testicular cell function, and epigenetic changes. However, significant uncertainties remain regarding definitive exposure-response relationships, developmental window

COVID-19 and lessons learned from the pandemic wave of meningococcal meningitis (1985-1990).

A novel coronavirus was first identified in late 2019 to cause an outbreak of acute respiratory illness in Wuhan city in China. The disease was designated COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) by the World Health Organization (WHO) in February 2020. Worldwide, the infection spread affecting more than 3 million confirmed cases, mainly in Europe and USA, and was characterised by the WHO as a pandemic in March 2020. During 1985-1990, a similar pandemic wave of meningococcal (MC) meningitis spread over vast territories in Asia (including Saudi Arabia) and Africa (including Sudan and Ethiopia with mo
