Chicken turkey-hens aged 8 weeks were exposed to a light regime of 1 hour light to 2 hours darkness for 8 weeks. Another experimental group was exposed to permanent lighting from hatching to the 16th week of age. The epiphyses of 5 males and females of either group were histologically, histochemically, and histometrically investigated. Significant differences were found to exist between the 2 experimental groups with regard to the nuclear volumes of epiphyseal cells. Epiphyseal cell activity was found to be reduced by permanent lighting.

PURPOSE: To evaluate whether there is a mismatch between Risser staging and the proximal humerus ossification system (PHOS); and to analyze the correlation in the skeletal maturity stages between the two humeral epiphyses.
METHODS: Data from patients aged 10 to 18 years with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) seen between 2018 to 2021 were analyzed. In an anteroposterior (AP) spine radiograph the ossification process was evaluated using the Risser classification method and bilateral PHOS (if both humeral epiphyses were visualized). A mismatch between methods was defined as a Risser 0-1 (re…

In the operative therapy of slipped capital femoral epiphysis, a controversial discussion exists about the sense of a simultaneous stabilization of both epiphyseal plates and about the correct time of removing the implants. We show the epikrisis of two patients to demonstrate our therapy regimen: in the first case the implants were removed too early. The consequence was a further slipping of the femoral epiphysis consecutive on both sides and the necessity of further surgery. In the other case we observed an outgrowing of the implant out of the epiphyseal plate by use of unthreaded wires. The

Clinical cases in mineral and bone metabolism : the official journal of the Italian Society of Osteoporosis, Mineral Metabolism, and Skeletal Diseases2015eng
BACKGROUND: Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) is an heritable systemic disorder of connective tissue due to different sequence variants in genes affecting both the synthesis of type I collagen and osteoblast function. Dominant and recessive inheritance is recognized. Approximately 90% of the OI cases are due to mutations in COL1A1/A2 genes. We clinically and radiologically describes an adult male with type III osteogenesis imperfecta who presents a rare bone dysplasia termed bulbous epiphyseal deformity in association with popcorn calcifications. Popcorn calcifications may occur with bulbous epiphy

We report a 22-year-old female with a variant of the Axenfeld-Rieger Syndrome (ARS) and discuss its relation with the subtelomeric 6p deletion. An ARS variant has been described in two familial cases of Axenfeld-Rieger Anomaly (ARA) featuring specific extra ocular manifestations-hypertelorism, midface hypoplasia, mild sensorial deafness, hydrocephaly, psychomotor delay and flattened femoral epiphyses. We proposed that this set of characteristics represents a separate syndrome within the ARS. On the other hand, there have been reported four cases with cryptic de novo pure 6pter microdeletions d…

Sex steroids play important role for bone maturation and statural growth in childhood, especially puberty. The closure of epiphyseal growth plate cartilage is regulated mainly by estrogens. Aromatization of androgens to estrogens is working in men as well as women. Thus, androgens are directly related to epiphyseal growth and maturation. In clinical conditions such as precocious puberty, excessive androgens production occurs in prepubertal period. This advances bone maturation as well as pubertal change resulting in short stature because of premature closure of epiphyseal growth plate. Various

Progressive pseudorheumatoid arthropathy of childhood (PPAC) is a rare autosomal recessive progressive condition that affects the cartilage of joints and bones. The symptoms of PPAC include stiffness of the joints, bony swelling of the toes and fingers, short stature, kyphosis, and muscle weakness. The radiologic manifestations are often mistaken for juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and include platyspondyly, widened metaphyses, flattened epiphyses, and large femoral heads. The disease is caused by variants in the WISP3 (also known as CCN6) gene, which encodes a member of the WNT1 inducible signa…

A 15-year-old male underwent pinning of bilateral grade III slipped capital femoral epiphyses. The pins were left long, and on one side a false aneurysm subsequently formed. If pins are placed anteriorly, protrusion should be kept to a minimum.

In order to define the factors of instability of fractures of the base of the first metacarpal in children, the authors reviewed 30 children presenting this lesion with a follow-up greater than 10 months. Patients in whom the growth cartilage of the base of the first metacarpal was still open and presenting a fracture with angular displacement greater than 30 degrees or metaphyso-epiphyseal sliding greater than 1 mm were included. Three groups were defined on the basis of radiographic findings: Group A: pure metaphyseal fractures (14 cases: 10 pinnings and 4 orthopaedic treatments); Group B: S

Radiographic changes in the femoral metaphysis in Legg-Calve-Perthes' (LCP) remain poorly understood. Our hypothesis was that these "cysts" are not truly metaphyseal but are metaphyseal changes radiographically projected onto the metaphysis. Surface epiphyseal changes were made on a normal hip and a hip with LCP. These "lesions" appeared metaphyseal on radiograph, and in the specimen with LCP, projected deep within the metaphysis due to flattening and three-dimensional distortion. "Metaphyseal" cysts in LCP may be epiphyseal changes superimposed on the metaphysis. This would explain the correl

We attempted to clarify experimentally the effect of hip joint incongruity on the necrotic femoral head. Twenty-four immature rabbits were divided into three groups: group I (12 rabbits), interruption of the epiphyseal artery and immobilization of the knee in extension for inducing subluxation of the hip; group II (six rabbits), interruption of the epiphyseal artery; group III (six rabbits), opening of the capsule (with preservation of the epiphyseal artery) and immobilization of the knee in extension. Radiographic examination of the hips of the rabbits in group I showed severe deformation of

INTRODUCTION: Injuries to the epiphyseal plate are of great concern as they can affect bone growth. Although epiphyseal fractures are common in adolescents, fractures of the distal femoral epiphyseal plate are rare.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a Salter-Harris type 1 fracture of the distal epiphysis of the femur that was self-inflicted by a patient with paraplegia due to spina bifida. The patient was brought to the pediatrician's attention during a routine checkup with an apparent swelling of the right thigh. Upon presentation, we performed a radiograph and an additional MRI, which

Scurvy is rare in the present world and is mostly found in children with abnormal dietary habits and physical and mental disabilities. Scurvy can present in various forms, mimicking several common diseases, thus making the diagnosis difficult. Spontaneous epiphyseal separation is known to occur in scurvy, although rarely reported. The usual locations of these epiphyseal separations are distal femur and proximal humerus. Our case is unique in that scurvy in a seemingly normal child resulted in proximal femur epiphyseal separation which was not reported previously. We report a case of a 7-year-o
