Diseases of the hip are significant public health problems. Fractures and osteoarthrosis of the hip are common in older age-groups, while congenital dislocation of the hip, Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, and slipped epiphysis affect a certain proportion of infants, children, and adolescents. The distribution of these five common hip diseases in the population is reviewed, aetiological hypotheses are discussed, and gaps in knowledge identified. Particular attention is focused on the roles of mechanical stress and hormones, since there is evidence for the involvement of one or both of these factors

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is an orthopedic pathology in which damage of the growth plate leads to the anterosuperior displacement of the femoral body in respect to the femoral head. Despite being a widely studied disease, its etiology is still unknown. This study was carried out to determine the influence of the physeal-diaphysis angle, body mass, the presence of the perichondrial ring, the type of physical activity, and physeal thickness on SCFE. For this purpose, a finite element analysis of the hip joint and the femur-physis interface was carried out. With the computational m

Wrist pain is a common complaint in gymnasts. Repetitive stress on the distal radial physis may lead to either gradual slipping of the epiphysis or growth disturbances. In some cases growth disturbances of the distal radial physis lead to triangulation of the distal radius and secondary ulnar overgrowth, and eventually a Madelung-like deformity. The present case report is the first to describe the outcome of epiphysiodesis of the distal radial and ulnar growth plates in a skeletally immature gymnast as a surgical treatment to prevent Madelung's deformity.

BACKGROUND: Increased intracapsular hip pressure is thought to be one of the possible etiologies of femoral head avascular necrosis after intra-articular proximal femoral fractures or acute slipped capital femoral epiphysis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between intra-articular hip pressure (IAP) and epiphyseal perfusion pressure (EPP), and its dependency on skeletal maturity using a porcine model.
METHODS: Seven female Yorkshire-hybrid pigs were used to study the direct relationship between IAP and EPP. A needle inserted into the capsule provided both IAP monitor

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Clinical, and radiological aspects and treatment of adolescent tibia have been studied in a review of 19 children native of the Caribbean.
MATERIAL: 23 cases of adolescent tibia vara in 19 children have been collected (14 males and 5 females, aged from 9 to 14).
METHODS: Clinical aspects (weight, lower limb axis), radiological signs (aspect of the physis, mechanical axis, epiphyseal slope) were studied pre and post-operatively.
RESULTS: All the boys presented an important overweight. Pain was the first symptom, characterized by a progressive varus deformity on a leg wh

BACKGROUND: In situ pinning is the mainstay treatment method in mild and moderate slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). Despite successful outcomes, some technical difficulties may be encountered during surgery, typically in overweight SCFE patients. The aim of the study is to compare the use of a bone marrow biopsy needle system to navigate the cannulated screw guidewire with the traditional in situ pinning technique.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients undergoing in situ pinning for stable mild-moderate SCFE at 2 different institutions between 2022 and 2024. Included patients

OBJECTIVE: Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is one of the most common hip disorders in adolescents, often linked to obesity. However, other factors, such as vitamin D deficiency, may also contribute to SCFE development. This study investigates the impact of vitamin D deficiency on SCFE development in a large cohort.
METHODS: We utilized the TriNetX national database to query pediatric patients with documented calcidiol levels. Patients with a recorded visit below the age of 9 and subsequent documented calcidiol levels were followed until SCFE occurrence or age 18. Patients were catego

BACKGROUND: Traditional management of moderate to severe stable slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) has been in situ fixation followed by reconstructive surgery if symptoms arise. This delayed approach may lead to irreversible intra-articular damage of the hip over time. The purpose of this study was to compare radiographic and clinical outcomes of the modified Dunn procedure (MDP) versus in situ fixation followed by delayed Imhauser osteotomy (DIO).
METHODS: This was a retrospective study from a single institution between 2001 and 2021. Among 250 patients diagnosed with SCFE, a total of

BACKGROUND: Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) demonstrates seasonal variation in certain latitudes but not others. Is such variation influenced by temperature differences, sunlight exposure and subsequent vitamin D production, or other climate variables? It was the purpose of this study to further investigate the seasonal variation in month of presentation for SCFE.
METHODS: Data for this study originated from the Pediatric Hospital Information System for all children with a diagnosis of SCFE from January 1, 2004 through December 31, 2014. From this database the patient's sex, ethnicit

The Maori of New Zealand have been identified as a high-risk population for slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). This study assessed whether the burden of disease from SCFE in the American Territory of American Samoa is similar to that identified in the Maori. This was a retrospective review of children from American Samoa treated for SCFE at a tertiary care pediatric hospital between 2005-2014. Demographic, clinical, and radiographic information was collected. All patients were followed for at least one year after surgery and prophylactically pinned hips were not included. Data for deter

BACKGROUND: In 2 recent studies, modified Oxford hip scores of 16 through 18 have been shown to predict an extremely high risk of contralateral slipping in unilateral slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). However, the modified Oxford system is not widely used. This may be due, in part, to the complexity of the scoring system, difficulty in viewing all 5 radiographic features on a single x-ray and phenotypic variation in the features. Ossification of the calcaneal apophysis provides an osteologic marker of skeletal maturation in relation to peak height velocity and has been described previo

PURPOSE: To investigate the outcomes of arthroscopic femoral neck osteoplasty in patients with slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE)-related impingement.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 37 consecutive patients (40 hips; 19 male and 18 female patients; age range, 10 to 19 years) with SCFE who underwent hip arthroscopy for femoral neck osteoplasty over a 4-year period. Six hips were excluded because of the severity of the slip or conversion to an open procedure. The preoperative and postoperative slip angle, alpha angle, and internal rotation in flexion were compared. Patients were eval

BACKGROUND: The presence of femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) after a slipped capital femoral epiphysis is thought to predispose the subsequent development of osteoarthritis (OA); however, there is a lack of evidence to support this hypothesis.
METHODS: One hundred twenty-one patients with stable slipped capital femoral epiphysis treated with in situ fixation were reviewed at a minimum of 20-year follow-up; the presence of a pistol grip deformity and FAI was determined. The Harris Hip Score (HHS) was used to measure clinical outcome, and the Tönnis grade for qualifying the presence of OA was

Hip arthroscopy is particularly attractive in children as it confers advantages over arthrotomy or open surgery, such as shorter recovery time and earlier return to activity. Developments in surgical technique and arthroscopic instrumentation have enabled extension of arthroscopy of the hip to this age group. Potential challenges in paediatric and adolescent hip arthroscopy include variability in size, normal developmental change from childhood to adolescence, and conditions specific to children and adolescents and their various consequences. Treatable disorders include the sequelae of traumat
