The immunologic parameters of 23 patients with erythema multiforme who were seen by us (17 patients) or who had biopsies sent for immunofluorescence testing (6 cases) are reviewed. Biopsy specimens were sectioned and tested with labeled antisera to human IgG, IgA, IgM, C3 and fibrin. Fourteen biopsies showed IgM deposits in the superficial blood vessels, 13 demonstrated C3, 15 showed fibrin deposition, and 1 biopsy showed IgA deposition. All biopsies were negative for IgG. A case report is presented of a patient in whom nearly all teeth of the permanent dentition still present had short roots, while some teeth had never been formed at all. It may be concluded from the typical differences in length between the roots of the various teeth that this condition must be due to complete cessation of the growth of the teeth at the age of 7 or 8 years. Erythema multiforme (EM) is a self-limiting, immune-mediated condition characterized by target-like lesions, often triggered by infections, with herpes simplex virus (HSV) being the most common agent. A 13-year-old Chinese girl attended to our Pediatric Dermatology Unit for the appearance of itchy targetoid lesions on the trunk, face and upper limbs. A skin biopsy showed histological findings typical of erythema multiforme minor.
