Respiratory sensory gating measured by respiratory-related evoked potentials in generalized anxiety disorder.

The perception of respiratory sensations plays an important role both in respiratory diseases and in anxiety disorders. However, little is known about the neural processes underlying respiratory sensory perception, especially in patient groups. Therefore, the present study examined whether patients with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) would demonstrate altered respiratory sensory gating compared to a healthy control group. Respiratory-related evoked potentials (RREP) were measured in a paired inspiratory occlusion paradigm presenting two brief occlusion stimuli (S1 and S2) within one inspir…

Transoesophageal spinal cord stimulation for motor-evoked potentials monitoring: feasibility, safety and stability.

OBJECTIVES: Specificity of transcranial motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) is low because amplitude fluctuation is common, which seems due to several technical and fundamental reasons including difficulty in electrodes positioning and fixation for transcranial stimulation and susceptibility to anaesthesia. This study aimed to investigate the feasibility, safety and stability of our novel technique of transoesophageal spinal cord stimulation to improve the stability of MEPs. METHODS: Ten anaesthetized adult beagle dogs were used. Transoesophageal stimulation was performed between the oesophageal l…

The role of motor-evoked potentials in the management of cervical spondylotic myelopathy.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) is a common disorder, but its management and the role of surgery are still a matter of controversy. The assessment of surgical outcome is complicated by the lack of reliable and objective methods to assess the severity of the myelopathy and its evolution. Motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) are a useful and reliable tool to measure noninvasively the involvement of the corticospinal tract in patients with CSM. Recent evidence suggests that MEPs could also have a role in monitoring the effect of surgical therapy. PURPOSE: The aim of the prese…

A multi-task learning approach for the extraction of single-trial evoked potentials.

Evoked potentials (EPs) are of great interest in neuroscience, but their measurement is difficult as they are embedded in background spontaneous electroencephalographic (EEG) activity which has a much larger amplitude. The widely used averaging technique requires the delivery of a large number of identical stimuli and yields only an "average" EP which does not allow the investigation of the possible variability of single-trial EPs. In the present paper, we propose the use of a multi-task learning method (MTL) for the simultaneous extraction of both the average and the N single-trial EPs from N…

Intra-operative monitoring of lower extremity motor-evoked potentials by direct cortical stimulation.

OBJECTIVE: Motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) are commonly recorded from upper-extremity muscles, whereas lower-extremity MEP (LE-MEP) monitoring has not been adequately established. The goal of the study was to develop a MEP monitoring method using direct cortical stimulation (DCS) for predicting motor deficits of lower extremities. METHODS: Intra-operative LE-MEP monitoring was performed in 22 patients. After craniotomy, a subdural electrode was placed on the cortex so that the optimal contact was positioned 2 cm lateral from the midline on the motor cortex. The electrodes for stimulation consi…

Cortical reorganization in dyslexic children after phonological training: evidence from early evoked potentials.

Brain plasticity was investigated in 14 Italian children affected by developmental dyslexia after 6 months of phonological training. The means used to measure language reorganization was the recognition potential, an early wave, also called N150, elicited by automatic word recognition. This component peaks over the left temporo-occipital cortex and its amplitude depends on linguistic expertise. N150 elicited by written words was measured both in dyslexic children before and after training and in a sample of matched normal readers during phonological, semantic and orthographic tasks. After trai

Assessing visual pathway function in multiple sclerosis patients with multifocal visual evoked potentials.

Multifocal visual evoked potentials provide a topographic measure of visual response amplitude and latency. The objective of this study was to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of the multifocal visual evoked potential technique in detecting visual abnormalities in patients with multiple sclerosis. Multifocal visual evoked potentials were recorded from 74 patients with multiple sclerosis with history of optic neuritis (MS-ON, n = 74 eyes) or without (MS-no-ON, n = 71 eyes), and 50 normal subjects (controls, n = 100 eyes) using a 60-sector pattern reversal dartboard stimulus (VERIS). Tone burst vestibular evoked myogenic potentials: diagnostic criteria in patients with Ménière's disease.

CONCLUSION: We suggest that 1/0.5 kHz FPA would be clinically useful in the diagnosis of Ménière's disease. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether clinically useful VEMP parameters could be identified using different tone burst stimuli for the diagnosis of Ménière's disease. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The Ménière's group included 24 affected ears from definite Ménière's disease and 26 affected ears from probable Ménière's disease. The control group included 20 normal ears. Using tone bursts of 0.5 and 1 kHz, two parameters were examined: 1) the frequency peak amplitude ratio (1/0.5 kHz FPA), where the p

Trajectories of shifting dipole sources of visual evoked potentials across the human brain.

Visual evoked potentials in response to images of a set of horizontal and vertical lines or crosses were recorded from the brains of 18 human subjects in 34 leads. Inverse EEG analyses were used for the dynamic location of the dipole current sources of the N1, P1, and N2 waves using a two-dipole spherical model with a 1-msec step. The occipital lobes of all subjects showed significant displacement of the dipoles of evoked potential waves along predominantly arc-shaped trajectories (75.8% of cases). Trajectory durations (average about 25 msec) were characterized by insignificant interindividual…

Acute perchloroethylene exposure alters rat visual-evoked potentials in relation to brain concentrations.

These experiments sought to establish a dose-effect relationship between the concentration of perchloroethylene (PCE) in brain tissue and concurrent changes in visual function. A physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model was implemented to predict concentrations of PCE in the brains of adult Long-Evans rats following inhalation exposure. The model was evaluated for performance against tissue concentrations from exposed rats (n = 40) and data from the published scientific literature. Visual function was assessed using steady-state pattern-elicited visual-evoked potentials (VEPs) record…

Visual cortical potentials of the mouse evoked by electrical stimulation of the retina.

An electrical evoked potential (EEP) of the visual system is a summed electrical record of the visual cortex in response to electrical stimulation of the retina. It is the primary method in the assessment of a visual prosthesis which targets at restoring vision to individuals with disease of the outer retina. However despite marked enthusiasm in the fabrication of such devices, little is known about the feasibility of such devices with the visually deprived brain. Recent research in visual plasticity has demonstrated that the adult brain retains marked plasticity following visual deafferentati
