Combined vascular and neurogenic claudication.

Eight patients with combined vascular and neurogenic claudication were presented. In the adult with coexistent neurospinal and vascular disease, a careful history and examination often suggested the pathology more productive of symptomatology. Among patients presenting with predominately vascular claudication, six of six patients had calf pain as part of the pain pattern, and in three of six patients the pain was crampy. Five of six patients had a consistent exercise tolerance pain pattern and obtained relief of symptoms by resting the leg. Among patients presenting with mainly neurogenic clau…

Exercise ameliorates insulin resistance and improves ASK1-mediated insulin signalling in obese rats.

Increasing evidence reveals that physical exercise is an efficient therapeutical approach in the treatment of insulin resistance (IR) and related metabolic diseases. However, the potential beneficial effects of exercise on insulin resistance and its underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Recent findings elucidated the negative role of ASK1 in repressing the glucose uptake through JNK1-IRS1-Akt signalling in liver. Thus, a detailed investigation of the effect of ASK1-mediated insulin signalling on exercise-mediated improvement of insulin sensitivity and its underlying mechanism was implemented i

Exercise is Medicine for Concussion.

Sport-related concussion (SRC) is a physiological brain injury that produces cerebral and systemic effects, including exercise intolerance. … concussion and persistent postconcussive symptoms (PPCS). It discusses the systematic evaluation of exercise tolerance after concussion using the Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test (BCTT) and reviews the utility of the Buffalo Concussion Bike Test (BCBT), the data from which are used to establish an individualized heart rate "dose" of subthreshold exercise to safely …

Association between chronic hepatitis B infection and metabolic syndrome.

Exercise-induced asthma (EIA) refers to the transient narrowing of the airways that occurs after vigorous exercise in 50-60% of patients with asthma. The need to condition the air inspired during exercise causes water to be lost from the airway surface, and this is thought to cause the release of inflammatory mediators (histamine, leukotrienes, and prostaglandins) from mast cells. EIA is associated with airway inflammation and its severity is markedly reduced following treatment with inhaled corticosteroids. Drugs that inhibit the release of mediators and drugs that inhibit their contractile e

The COVID‑19 … ed based on the improvement in spirometry and clinical parameters, as well as indicators of CRF and exercise tolerance. RESULTS: The mean baseline CRF level, as assessed by the 6‑minute walk test (6MWT), was reduced to 76.32% of the predicted value (SD, 15.87) in men and 85.83% of the predicted value (SD, 15.60) in women, while the mean values of the spirometry par …

Decreases in left atrial compliance during early-stage exercise are related to exercise intolerance in asymptomatic significant mitral stenosis.

BACKGROUND: Doppler-driven net atrioventricular compliance (Cn ), which represents left atrial (LA) compliance, is an important determinant of pulmonary hypertension in mitral stenosis (MS). HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that decreases in Cn during early-stage exercise underlie exercise intolerance in patients with MS. METHODS: Thirty-three asymptomatic patients with significant MS (valve area 1.24 ± 0.16 cm2 ) underwent resting and bicycle exercise echocardiography. LA compliance and conventional parameters were assessed at each workload. The patients were classified into two groups based on

No effect of oral sucrose or IV glucose during exercise in phosphorylase b kinase deficiency.

This case report investigated exercise metabolism and the effect of oral sucrose and intravenous glucose supplementation in a 30-year-old, m … red to four healthy subjects. These studies show that neither oral nor intravenous glucose improved exercise tolerance in this patient with PHK deficiency. Despite Western blots indicated affected metabolism on protein level, systemic substrate turnover studies showed that carbohydrate and fatty acid oxidations were normal.

Summation anaphylaxis: A challenging diagnosis.

Anaphylaxis is the most severe of allergic reactions. The most frequent triggers of anaphylaxis in childhood are food, insect venom, drugs, exercise, etc. In some cases, the presence of more than one trigger is necessary for the allergic reaction, while one trigger alone is tolerated. This rare condition is called summation anaphylaxis (SA). Food-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis is the most well-known SA. However, SA may also occur with the association between food and/or exercise plus one or more of the following other cofactors, such as drugs, especially non-steroidal anti-inflammatory

[Cardiorespiratory system state in renovascular hypertension dynamics after surgical treatment and physical rehabilitation].

The cardio-respiratory system in 50 healthy subjects and 58 patients with renal hypertension was examined using bicycle spiroergometry at rest and after exercise, before and after the reconstructive surgery on renal arteries and following rehabilitational postoperative treatment by physical training. Before surgery the patients showed excessive pressor response to exercises, ECG signs of overload and hypertrophy of the left ventricle and atrium increasing during exercise, decreased oxygenation of the tissues, decreased compensatory and adaptive capacity. After the operation AD at rest decrease

Intentions of Canadian health professionals towards recommending exercise for people living with ALS.

BACKGROUND: To provide a nationwide overview of the attitudes, social pressure, perceived ability and intentions of health professionals toward exercise prescription for people living with ALS (pALS). METHODS: An online survey of physician and non-physician health professionals (HPs) working in academic ALS clinics across Canada. RESULTS: The response rate was 48% (84/176) with 30% of respondents identifying as physicians, 63% as other HPs and the remainder as administrative or research personnel. Respondents were sharply divided in their intentions to provide exercise counsel: 24% unlikely

Effects of ethaverine hydrochloride on the walking tolerance of patients with intermittent claudication.

The effect of ethaverine hydrochloride on exercise tolerance of patients with intermittent claudication was evaluated in a double-blind, placebo-controlled study conducted at three sites. Forty-five patients with symptoms of occlusive arterial insufficiency of the lower extremities were randomly assigned to receive ethaverine 200 mg or placebo four times daily. The patients were evaluated biweekly for 12 weeks with treadmill claudication tests, patient and investigator assessments of symptom severity, and reports of adverse reactions. Doppler ankle/brachial pressure ratios were recorded for 26…

Influence of brief carbon dioxide inhalation on acute exercise performance and recovery: A pilot study.

Brief inhalation of carbon dioxide (CO2) has been proposed to counteract transient hypocapnia by enhancing oxygen unloading, vasodilation, and sympathetic modulation. Despite these potential ergogenic mechanisms, CO2 has rarely been investigated in the exercise context. The present study investigated whether brief CO2 inhalation (iCO2) influences performance and recovery during high-intensity interval exercise. Nine healthy adults completed two randomized, single-blinded crossover trials of repeated cycling intervals at 85% peak work rate until volitional exhaustion or cadence dropped below 60

Exercise-induced hypotension in autonomic disorders.

The autonomic nervous system closely integrates a range of vital processes, including, cardiovascular function. Physical activity, or exercise, requires a range of integrated autonomic and cardiovascular adjustments in order to maintain homeostasis. Pathological conditions that result in dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system, such as autonomic failure, can therefore jeopardize the control of blood pressure resulting in hypotension and have serious implications for health. Exercise induced hypotension, defined as a ≥ 10 mmHg fall in systolic blood pressure during exercise, can be a signif
