PURPOSE: There has been a sudden increase in the number of rhino-orbital mucormycosis cases, primarily affecting patients recovering from COVID-19 infection. The local health authorities have declared the current situation an epidemic. In this study, we assess the role of exenteration in preventing disease progression and improving survival in patients with rhino-orbital mucormycosis.
METHODS: The patients undergoing exenteration were grouped into the exenteration arm and those denying exenteration were grouped into the nonexenteration arm. The patients were followed at 1 month and 3 months.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) and to explore its value in the diagnosis of intraocular infection.
METHODS: A retrospective case-series study of patients with suspected intraocular infection was performed. Intraocular fluid samples were collected from all the patients and sent for mNGS. Detailed clinical data, the results of mNGS and other laboratory examinations, the sequencing data of mNGS, and the final diagnosis were recorded.
RESULTS: Fifteen eyes of 15 patients were included in the study. Eight samples were identified as positive for

Parasitic infections of the eyes are a major cause of ocular diseases across the globe. The causative agents range from simple organisms such as unicellular protozoans to complex metazoan helminths. The disease spectrum varies depending on the geographic location, prevailing hygiene, living and eating habits of the inhabitants, and the type of animals that surround them. They cause enormous ocular morbidity and mortality not because they are untreatable, but largely due to late or misdiagnosis, often from unfamiliarity with the diseases produced. We provide an up-to-date comprehensive overview

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of fungal keratitis caused by Alternaria in a 49-year-old female who developed an acute onset of eye infection after ocular trauma caused by an olive leaf.
METHODS: The clinical presentation, microbiological diagnosis, and therapeutic approaches are reported.
RESULTS: The patient was referred to our university hospital clinic with corneal abscess in her left eye. Before the start of an empirical antibacterial therapy (both topical and systemic), a swab of the cornea was obtained which at microscopic examination revealed a few fragments of hyphal elements, probably

Ocular inflammation and infection may involve any part of the eye and surrounding tissue. A complete examination, including visual acuity, extraocular movements, pupillary response, slit lamp examination, and fluorescein staining, is often required to establish the diagnosis. Pain relief may be achieved with oral analgesics and cycloplegics. In most cases, prompt follow-up is required.

A 4-month-old crossbred female dog presented with complaints of poor vision and odd appearance of the eyes. At the age of a month, the animal was found lying in a railway road in a very bad condition and was rescued from death. At that time, the patient was presented with severe bilateral ocular discharge, and from both eyes, dipterous fly larvae were extracted. The dog was given symptomatic treatment (deworming, topical and systemic antibiotics, nutritional support) but never regained a normal eye appearance. At the time of the initial presentation, it had severe vision impairment because of

While symptoms can be very distressing, patients with conjunctivitis general maintain good vision and recover completely without permanent sequelae. The great majority of cases of conjunctivitis are infectious or allergic in origin. Seen with increasing frequency are external eye diseases related to contact lens wear or prolonged use of ophthalmic medications. The various forms of conjunctivitis are often not associated with pathognomonic features. A thorough history and ophthalmic examination often permit a presumptive diagnosis and initiation of empiric therapy. For example, a chronic bilate

Infectious endophthalmitis is an important cause of vision loss worldwide. This entity most often occurs as a complication of intraocular surgery especially following cataract surgery or intravitreal injection. Endophthalmitis is regarded as a serious complication following ocular surgery and the final visual outcome is fundamentally contingent on timely recognition and intervention. Intravitreal and oral antibiotics in combination with pars plana vitrectomy or vitreous aspiration remain the mainstay in the management of endophthalmitis. However, significant inflammation may persist even after

AIMS: To determine the accuracy of diagnosing microbial keratitis by masked medical and non-medical observers using the Heidelberg Retina Tomograph II/Rostock Cornea Module in vivo confocal microscope.
METHODS: Confocal images were selected for 62 eyes with culture- or biopsy-proven infections. The cases comprised 26 Acanthamoeba, 12 fungus, three Microsporidia, two Nocardia and 19 bacterial infections (controls). The reference standard for comparison was a positive tissue diagnosis. These images were assessed on two separate occasions by four observers who were masked to the tissue diagnosis

BACKGROUND: Endogenous endophthalmitis is a rare complication of gram-negative sepsis. The diagnosis often is delayed unless a high index of suspicion exists. Familiarity with the clinical setting in which endogenous Klebsiella endophthalmitis occurs will hasten diagnosis and may improve outcome.
METHODS: The authors reviewed the medical literature and describe two patients with diabetes who lost vision from endogenous Klebsiella endophthalmitis.
FINDINGS: One patient lost all vision in both eyes before the diagnosis of sepsis was clinically suspected. In the other, endophthalmitis was the o

The CNS afflictions in AIDS are myriad and suggest a tropism of HIV to neural tissue. Ocular involvement is a frequent manifestation of the HIV infection, resulting in a high incidence of blindness within this patient population. Ocular lesions include cotton wool spots, presumably from HIV-induced microvasculopathy, retinal hemorrhage in cytomegalovirus retinitis and conjunctival Kaposi's sarcoma. These manifestations have been noted in up to 71% of AIDS patients. In fact, ocular disease is often the presenting symptom in an HIV-infected individual. Despite the high incidence of ocular involv

To confirm whether ocular symptoms and complaints related to the COVID-19 infection persist after recovery. A cross-sectional study was conducted on people who came to the healthcare center for regular physical examinations when the lockdown lifted for nearly 1 month. Ophthalmologists performed comprehensive ocular examinations. The infection history of COVID-19 was identified by a self-reported reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) test of a nasopharyngeal swab sample for SARS-CoV-2 or a novel coronavirus antigen test with self-reported typical infection symptoms. Demographic data was collected

Introduction: Uveitis is characterized by inflammation of the middle layer of the eye. Its overall incidence is low. Autoimmune diseases and infections are the most common underlying diseases. Out of the autoimmune diseases, juvenile idiopathic arthritis is associated most frequently with uveitis. The topical ophthalmological treatment may fail in a significant proportion of the patients and immunomodulatory therapy may be required. Aim and method: In a retrospective study, data of 33 children diagnosed and treated with uveitis at the Department of Pediatrics and Ophthalmology, University of P

Rhino-orbitocerebral mucormycosis (ROCM) caused by more common zygomycetes (e.g., Mucor) is known to cause rapidly fatal infections in immunocompromised patients. Apophysomyces elegans is an emerging zygomycete that has been reported to cause invasive cutaneous and rhino-orbitocerebral infections in immunocompetent individuals. Limited data exist describing the syndrome of ROCM caused by A. elegans. We describe a recent case and performed a comprehensive literature review to delineate the clinical characteristics of ROCM caused by A. elegans. Our case is a 50-year-old man with diabetes mellitu
