The nasopalpebral lipoma-coloboma syndrome: a new autosomal dominant dysplasia-malformation syndrome with congenital nasopalpebral lipomas, eyelid colobomas, telecanthus, and maxillary hypoplasia.

We describe a new autosomal dominant dysplasia-malformation syndrome from eight affected individuals in three generations of a Venezuelan family. It is characterized by congenital symmetrical upper lid and nasopalpebral lipomas, bilateral symmetrical upper and lower palpebral colobomas located at the junction of the inner and middle thirds of the lids, telecanthus, and maxillary hypoplasia. Affected individuals have a broad forehead, window's peak, abnormal pattern of eyebrows and eyelashes, and maldevelopment of the lacrimal punctae. Interorbital distance is normal, but interpupillary distanc…

Lymphoscintigraphic Abnormalities Associated with Milroy Disease and Lymphedema-Distichiasis Syndrome.

Background: Primary lymphedema is genetically heterogeneous. Two of the most common forms of primary lymphedema are Milroy disease (MD) and lymphedema-distichiasis syndrome (LDS). This study aims to look further into the pathogenesis of the two conditions by analyzing the lymphoscintigram images from affected individuals to ascertain if it is a useful diagnostic tool. Methods and Results: The lymphoscintigrams of patients with MD and LDS were analyzed, comparing the images and transport parameters of the two genotypes against a control population. Lymphoscintigrams were available for 12 MD and

Trichiasis in Aboriginal people of the Kimberley region of Western Australia.

BACKGROUND: Trachoma is a significant public health problem in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. The prevalence of follicular trachoma in the region has been well documented and control of active trachoma is well established. In contrast, trichiasis prevalence in recent years is less well documented. This study aimed to determine trichiasis prevalence in the Kimberley population and to document an appropriate intervention. METHODS: A collaborative programme was established involving the Kimberley Public Health Unit, Kimberley Aged Care Services and the visiting ophthalmology service.

Congenital shortening of the anterior lamella of all eyelids: the so-called ablepharon macrostomia syndrome.

The so-called ablepharon macrostomia syndrome is an extremely rate congenital condition that includes abnormal ears, an enlarged, fishlike mouth, absence of lanugo, redundant skin, and vertical shortening of all eyelids. Only four cases have been described so far. In these cases the nature of the eyelid anomalies has not been clearly defined. We report one more case showing that the condition is better described as a severe microblepharon because only the anterior lamella of the eyelids is shortened. The literature about this condition is reviewed, and oculoplastic treatment is discussed.

A case report of demodicosis.

We report on a patient who had an excessive number of mites (Demodex folliculorum) on his eye lashes, i.e. 10 mites on eight lashes examined. A review of three previous reports suggested that one mite for every two lashes represents an over population of this nearly ubiquitous mite. Greasy scales on the lashes and foamy tears suggested that seborrhea was present as well as demodicosis. The primary symptoms of itching was relieved after one week of treatment with mercuric oxide ointment and lid scrubs, although the number of mites was not reduced. Treatment for an additional two weeks did reduc

Atrichia with papular lesions in Syrian siblings exposing global diagnostic challenges in genetic alopecia: A rare case report.

Atrichia with papular lesions is a rare autosomal recessive genodermatosis characterized by complete, irreversible hair loss that typically begins in infancy and is often misdiagnosed due to phenotypic similarity to other forms of alopecia. A 4-year-old male patient presented with complete hair loss since infancy, with absent eyebrows and eyelashes and no evidence of regrowth. His younger sister exhibited identical features, consistent with a history of consanguinity in the family. Physical examination revealed smooth skin and multiple firm, painless, keratotic papules (2-3 mm) on the scalp an…

A New Sign in UV Dermoscopy for Diagnosing Pthiriasis: The Glowing Crab Louse Sign.

Pthirus pubis, commonly known as the pubic louse, is an obligate ectoparasite causing sexually transmitted infestation, typically presenting with intense pruritus in the pubic and genital regions. Atypical localizations, including eyelashes, axillae, chest, and scalp hair, have been described. Accurate diagnosis can be challenging in individuals with dense hair or low parasite burden. We report a case of a 27-year-old man presenting with two weeks of severe pubic pruritus. He reported multiple episodes of unprotected sexual intercourse, with no systemic illness or immunosuppression. Clinical e…

Ichthyosis Follicularis, Alopecia, and Photophobia Syndrome in a Saudi Child: A Case Report.

Ichthyosis follicularis, atrichia, and photophobia (IFAP) syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive, X-linked, genetic disorder that involves a triad of follicular ichthyosis, atrichia of the scalp, and photophobia. We report a case of an 8-year-old boy with alopecia of the scalp, eyebrows, and eyelashes, which occurred in his first year of age. His birth was uneventful, and his developmental milestones were normal. The alopecia was non-scarring and was accompanied by mild generalized xerosis, photophobia, and recurrent angular cheilitis. Moreover, numerous non-inflammatory, follicular, keratotic…

Successful Therapy of Alopecia Universalis Using a Combination of Systemic Methotrexate and Corticosteroids and Topical 5% Minoxidil.

Alopecia areata (AA) is an autoimmune disease-specific to specific organs mediated by T lymphocytes with hair follicles as targets. Severe AA could be in the form of alopecia universalis (AU). AU therapy is relatively difficult and challenging with varying outcomes. Herein, we reported a case of AU in a 19-year-old man with alopecia in the hairy scalp area, eyebrows, eyelashes, moustache, beard, and axillary hair since 2.5 years ago. The patient's severity of alopecia tool (SALT) score was 100%. The patient was given a combination therapy of 15 mg methotrexate per week and 16 mg methylpredniso…
