BACKGROUND: When dealing with traumatized patients, it is crucial to prioritize securing their airway. However, intubating someone who has sustained significant facial injuries can pose difficulties, as the narrow and altered shape of their upper airway may impede their ability to open their mouth. In light of this, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the volumetric and morphological alterations to the upper airway resulting from facial trauma by utilizing computed tomography (CT) scans.
METHOD: This is a single-centered retrospective analytical study. This study included CT scans of pat…

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the changes in endoneurial fluid pressure (EFP) and diameter of the crushed facial nerves in guinea pigs in order to determine whether there is necessity and the opportunity of the facial nerves decompression in different stage after injury.
METHODS: EFP were measured using a servo-nulling micropipette system in the normal and crushed facial nerves.
RESULTS: The results showed that the EFP in the facial nerve increased significantly after compression. The highest pressure of EFP 12.94 +/- 1.69 mmHg occurred at the end of the first week after injury, which was 4 to 5

BACKGROUND: The dangers associated with horse riding, a popular activity throughout Australia, are well documented; yet, few studies have comprehensively described injuries caused by horses to nonriders. This study aimed to facilitate targeted injury prevention strategies and appropriate trauma management by describing all horse-related injuries, for both riders and nonriders, in Queensland, and identifying those at greatest risk.
METHODS: Horse-related injury data from 2005 to 2009 were extracted from the Queensland Trauma Registry. Descriptive comparisons were undertaken for demographic, in

BACKGROUND: Numerous guidelines highlight the need for early airway management in facial trauma patients since specific fracture patterns may induce airway obstruction. However, the incidence of these hallmark injuries, including flail mandibles and posterior displacement of the maxilla, is contentious. We aim to evaluate specific trauma-related variables in facial fracture patients, which affect the need for on-scene versus in-hospital airway management.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included all patients with any type of facial fracture, who required early airway management on-sc

INTRODUCTION: Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports worldwide. As a result, there has been an accompanying rise in pickleball-related injuries. Despite craniofacial injuries accounting for 12% of all pickleball-related injuries, there is limited research analyzing how these injuries present in this region. This study analyzes the incidence, distribution, and characteristics of pickleball-related craniofacial injuries over the past decade.
METHODS: The US Consumer Product Safety Commission's National Electronic Injury Surveillance System Database (NEISS) was queried to perform a retr…

Every structure contained within the temporal bone in close proximity to the facial nerve is at risk during intratemporal bone surgery on the facial nerve. We present a review of the causes of injuries to these structures and of ways to prevent such injuries. This review includes information drawn from pertinent literature, from the author's experience managing 139 patients undergoing temporal bone surgery for a variety of facial nerve disorders between 1974 and 1981, from an analysis of 43 of our patients whose hearing was evaluated before transmastoid facial nerve surgery and again 6 months

A retrospective review of 36 patients with delayed-onset (19 patients) and immediate-onset (17 patients) traumatic facial paralysis was performed. We hypothesized that traumatic delayed-onset facial paralysis does not necessitate surgical decompression under any routine circumstances. Of 19 patients in this group, normal recovery (House grade 1) occurred in 94 percent of the patients without surgical intervention. The small percentage (6%) of these patients who failed to recover completely demonstrated mild degrees of weakness and synkinesis (House grade 2). Immediate-onset paralysis occurred

Facial trauma often involves injuries to the eyelid and periorbital region. Management of these injuries can be challenging due to the involvement of multiple complex anatomic structures that are in close proximity. Restoration of normal anatomic relationships of the eyelids and periocular structures is essential for optimum functional and aesthetic outcome after trauma. This review provides an overview of the current literature involving soft tissue trauma of the eyelid and periorbital tissue, and highlights key steps in patient evaluation and management with various types of injuries.

Ocular injuries commonly occur in patients with facial fractures. This prospective study was set up to determine the incidence of ocular injuries, as assessed by an ophthalmologist, in patients who had sustained midfacial fractures. Over a 2-year period, a study of 363 patients who had sustained midfacial trauma sufficient to lead to a facial bone fracture (438 fractures) was undertaken and patients received a comprehensive examination by an ophthalmologist and an orthoptist within 1 week of injury. The characteristics of the eye injuries sustained were related to the aetiology of the fracture

Direct facial nerve stimulation and monitoring during cerebellopontine angle (CPA) tumor surgery are critical for identification and preservation of function. Electrically evoked facial nerve monitoring was compared with ulnar train-of-four monitoring under progressive neuromuscular blockade. Using a rabbit model, the facial nerve function of six controls was compared to that of six specimens with acute or chronic injuries. Eight of 18 patients who had undergone CPA tumor resection during one year were also studied. Regression analysis correlated between ulnar nerve monitoring and facial elect
