Myofibroma of the zygomatic bone in an older child: a case report.

Myofibroma/myofibromatosis is a rare mesenchymal disorder that is part of a heterogeneous group of approximately 20 disorders that are classified primarily according to the proliferation of benign fibrous elements. These lesions can arise during a wide range of ages, with many occurring in the first decade of life, and they are slightly more common in males than females. The etiology of this disease is not well understood. Clinically, patients with myofibroma/myofibromatosis present with various signs, ranging from superficial, cutaneous, purplish macules to freely movable subcutaneous masses

Management of sialoblastoma with surgery and brachytherapy.

Sialoblastoma is a rare congenital or perinatal salivary gland tumor with significant variability in histological appearance and biological behavior. We reported one case of sialoblastoma occurring in the parotid gland of an 18-month-old female. The tumor was excised with negative margins, and the sacrificed facial nerve was reconstructed with great auricular nerve graft. The tumor recurred 6 months after operation and was treated with (125)I seed implant brachytherapy. No recurrence was found after 21 months of follow-up.

Genital angiofibromas in tuberous sclerosis: two cases.

Cutaneous lesions are an important feature of tuberous sclerosis (TS). Facial angiofibromas usually begin to appear at the end of the first decade of life and are considered to occur in about 88% of adults with TS. They are only rarely reported on sites other than the face or front. In this paper, we report two patients with the complete syndrome of TS that had, in addition to classic facial lesions, multiple papules on the genital area. Histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of angiofibroma. One patient's lesions were misdiagnosed as genital warts and were so being treated before the correct

[Successful therapy of secondary melanoma of the orbit with DTIC].

The authors report on cytostatic treatment of a secondary malignant melanoma of the left orbit in a 68-year-old patient. It was an inoperable tumor, extending parabulbarly and retrobulbarly, with erosion of the bone of the orbital roof and deep infiltration into the frontal sinus. The regression of the tumor following intravenous administration of Dacarbacine (6 series of 5 X 200 mg DTIC) is shown on computerized tomograms. A year after completion of chemotherapy there had been no recurrence; the patient then died suddenly from the sequelae of an apoplexy.

Management of Slowly Progressive Facial Weakness in Patients With Benign Tumors of the Facial Nerve.

BACKGROUND: Benign facial nerve tumors have unique presentations granting distinct diagnostic and management implications. Unlike acute-onset facial paralysis, the gradual, intermittent course complicates diagnosis, treatment strategy, and timing, especially when considering potential reanimation. This study presents our institutional experience and proposes approaches to management and evaluation of patients with slowly progressive facial weakness due to benign tumors. METHODS: A retrospective review included patients between August 2009 and April 2026 with slowly progressive facial weakness

Intrinsic facial nerve tumours of the temporal bone: a proposed management guideline.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper was to propose a guideline for the management of intrinsic facial nerve tumours based on our practice and findings in the literature. METHOD: A retrospective review of intrinsic facial nerve tumours over the last 15 years was performed. Parameters measured included age, presenting symptoms, pre- and post-treatment hearing and House-Brackmann grading, tumour position, treatment and duration of follow up. RESULTS: A total of 15 patients presented with intrinsic facial nerve tumours over the study period. The most common presenting complaint was facial symptoms

Middle ear osteoma causing progressive facial nerve weakness: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Facial nerve weakness is most commonly due to Bell's palsy or cerebrovascular accidents. Rarely, middle ear tumor presents with facial nerve dysfunction. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a very unusual case of middle ear osteoma in a 49-year-old Caucasian woman causing progressive facial nerve deficit. A subtle middle ear lesion was observed on otoscopy and computed tomographic images demonstrated an osseous middle ear tumor. Complete surgical excision resulted in the partial recovery of facial nerve function. CONCLUSIONS: Facial nerve dysfunction is rarely caused by middle ear tum

[Functional and esthetic reconstruction of complex facial defects after tumor resection and trauma].

Nowadays, free revascularized myocutaneous and osteomyocutaneous flaps are available as grafts of high biological value, which allow functional and esthetic rehabilitation after tumor resection and trauma. The use of these flaps however must be considered carefully, since these techniques require a good general physical condition of the patient for extensive surgery and a considerable operation time. Therefore we consider these flaps as adequate solely in cases of poor recipient site conditions after previous irradiation or chronic infection, in cases of extensive scar formation and in large b

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma degeneration in a patient with facial fibrous dysplasia.

Seventy-two patients with craniofacial fibrous dysplasia were treated during a period of 18 years. Only 1 patient (1.4%) developed malignant degeneration into malignant fibrous histiocytoma. Total excision including the gross mass and adjacent facial bone was performed at that time, however the patient refused an orbital exenteration and postoperative adjuvant therapy. Tumor recurrence developed 2 years later and the patient died. To our knowledge this is the first report describing malignant fibrous histiocytoma degeneration from a fibrous dysplasia localized to the facial bones. Although com

[Current technique for the imaging of the face].

In this report, the authors evaluate the indications of the different imaging techniques of the face and the adjacent deep and superficial regions. Thus, CT stays the first examination of the paranasal sinuses completed by MRI especially when an inflammatory pathology is associated with a benign or malignant tumor. Traumatisms of the face must be investigated by CT with an emphasis on the frontal and sagittal reformated sections. The study of the superficial areas of the face (parotid gland) is best explored by US and MRI. MRI gives better results than CT in the exploration of the deep regions

Predicting facial nerve invasion by parotid gland carcinoma and outcome of facial reanimation.

We sought to define risk factors for facial nerve involvement in parotid gland carcinoma and assess the outcome of facial nerve reanimation. Medical records were reviewed of 66 patients who underwent surgery for parotid carcinoma in 2000–2007 at a tertiary hospital. Patient and tumor characteristics were compared between patients with and without facial nerve involvement and were analyzed on their influence on functional outcome following reanimation. Facial nerve involvement was verified intraoperatively in 24 patients, of whom 16 underwent reanimation during ablative surgery. Deep lobe invas

Imaging of Perineural Spread in Head and Neck Cancer.

Perineural spread (PNS) of tumor is a recognized pattern of metastasis occurring in the head and neck. Imaging plays a critical role in identifying PNS for adequate staging and treatment planning. Understanding the major branches and pathways of cranial nerves V and VII, key anatomic landmarks, interconnections between these nerves, and pearls and pitfalls of PNS imaging can aid in early detection, appropriate therapy, and the best possible chance for cure.

Facial nerve preservation in total parotidectomy for parotid tumors: a review of 27 cases.

We conducted a study to evaluate the success of facial nerve preservation in 27 adults with a parotid tumor who underwent total parotidectomy. Of this group, 11 patients had a malignant tumor, 10 had a recurrent benign tumor, and 6 had a primary benign tumor. Preoperatively, 7 patients had facial nerve paresis. Postoperatively, facial nerve preservation was achieved in all but 1 case; in the exception, the nerve was sacrificed and grafting was necessary. In conclusion, facial nerve preservation can be achieved in almost all cases of total parotidectomy.

Does a positive neural margin affect outcome in facial nerve grafting?

BACKGROUND: We sought to determine the effect of positive neural margins on subsequent facial nerve function following facial nerve grafting. METHODS: In this retrospective review, 19 patients had sacrifice of their facial nerve with immediate facial nerve grafting, 8 had positive neural margins, and 11 had negative neural margins. Facial nerve function was analyzed using the House-Brackman scale. RESULTS: In the first group (8 patients), 5 had positive proximal margins and 3 had positive distal neural margins. Outcome by House-Brackman score was III (2 patients), IV (3 patients), V (1 patie

A 2-Staged Approach for Resection of Giant Dumbbell Shaped Facial Nerve Schwannoma With Facial Nerve Preservation.

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Facial nerve schwannoma (FNS) is a rare, nerve sheath tumor that presents unique surgical challenges, particularly large tumors involving multiple anatomic compartments. Preservation of facial nerve function while ensuring adequate tumor resection remains the primary goal in management. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: The patient was a 37-year-old man with a 4-year history of left-sided hearing loss and worsening balance with intact facial nerve function. MRI and computed tomography demonstrated a 7.5-cm dumbbell lesion occupying the posterior and middle fossa consistent wit

Social impairment in survivors of pediatric brain tumors via reduced social attention and emotion-specific facial expression recognition.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Survivors of pediatric brain tumors (SPBT) experience significant social challenges, including fewer friends and greater isolation than peers. Difficulties in face processing and visual social attention have been implicated in these outcomes. This study evaluated facial expression recognition (FER), social attention, and their associations with social impairments in SPBT. METHODS: SPBT (N = 54; ages 7-16) at least 2 years post treatment completed a measure of FER, while parents completed measures of social impairment. A subset (N = 30) completed a social attention asses
