Illusory feature slowing: evidence for perceptual models of global facial change.

Upright static faces are widely thought to recruit holistic representations, whereby individual features are integrated into nondecomposable wholes for recognition and interpretation. In contrast, little is known about the perceptual integration of dynamic features when viewing moving faces. People are frequently exposed to correlated eye and mouth movements, such as the characteristic changes that accompany facial emotion, yawning, sneezing, and laughter. However, it is unclear whether the visual system is sensitive to these dynamic regularities, encoding facial behavior relative to a set of

Oral contraceptives may alter the detection of emotions in facial expressions.

A possible effect of oral contraceptives on emotion recognition was observed in the context of a clinical trial with a corticosteroid. Users of oral contraceptives detected significantly fewer facial expressions of sadness, anger and disgust than non-users. This was true for trial participants overall as well as for those randomized to placebo. Although it is uncertain whether this is an effect of oral contraceptives or a pre-existing difference, future studies on the effect of interventions should control for the effects of oral contraceptives on emotional and cognitive outcomes.

Perceptual asymmetries are preserved in memory for highly familiar faces of self and friend.

We investigated the effect of familiarity on people's perception of facial likeness by asking participants to choose which of two mirror-symmetric chimeric images (made from the left or right half of a photograph of a face) looked more like an original image. In separate trials the participants made this judgment for their own face and for the face of a close friend; half of them matched to a true image of the original and half matched to a mirror image of the original. In the case of matching to a friend's face presented in the familiar orientation, over 80% of participants chose the left-lef

The role of person familiarity in young infants' perception of emotional expressions.

This research investigated the role of person familiarity in the ability of 3.5-month-old infants to recognize emotional expressions. Infants (N = 72) were presented simultaneously with two filmed facial expressions, happy and sad, accompanied by a single vocal expression that was concordant with one of the two facial expressions. Infants' looking preferences and facial expressions were coded. Results indicated that when the emotional expressions were portrayed by each infant's own mother, infants looked significantly longer toward the facial expressions that were accompanied by affectively ma

Atypical prosopagnosia following right hemispheric stroke: A 23-year follow-up study with M.T.

Most findings on prosopagnosia to date suggest preserved voice recognition in prosopagnosia (except in cases with bilateral lesions). Here we report a follow-up examination on M.T., suffering from acquired prosopagnosia following a large unilateral right-hemispheric lesion in frontal, parietal, and anterior temporal areas excluding core ventral occipitotemporal face areas. Twenty-three years after initial testing we reassessed face and object recognition skills [Henke, K., Schweinberger, S. R., Grigo, A., Klos, T., & Sommer, W. (1998). Cavernous haemangioma of the internal auditory canal.

Cavernous haemangiomas are rare lesions of the cerebello-pontine angle that can mimic the more commonly occurring vestibular schwannoma. A case report involving a patient with a cavernous haemangioma of the internal auditory canal (IAC) highlights this as a diagnostic possibility for lesions of the IAC by comparing and contrasting the clinical and radiological findings with the more commonly occurring vestibular nerve and facial schwannomas. Symptoms such as hearing loss and facial paralysis that are disproportionate to the size of the lesion or fluctuate with hormonal changes such as those se

Sensory encoding of emotion conveyed by the face and visual context.

Humans rapidly detect and interpret sensory signals that have emotional meaning. The posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS) and amygdala are known to be critical for this ability, but their precise contributions remain contentious. Here we investigate how these structures process visual emotional cues using artificial neural networks (ANNs) to model fMRI signal acquired as human participants view complex, naturalistic stimuli. Characterizing data from two archival studies (Ns = 20, 45), we evaluated whether representations from ANNs optimized to recognize emotion from facial expressions alo

Facial disgust in response to touches, smells, and tastes.

Disgust serves to defend the body from the entry of toxins and disease. Central to this function is a strong relationship with the proximate senses of smell, taste, and touch. Theory suggests that distinct and reflexive facial movements should be evoked by gustatory and olfactory disgusts, serving to impede bodily entry. While this hypothesis has received some support from facial recognition studies, whether smell and taste disgusts actually produce distinct facial responses, is unknown. Moreover, there has been no assessment of the facial response evoked by contact with disgusting objects. To…

Emotion Processing in Schizophrenia: Insights From a Brain Imaging Study Comparing Patients, Siblings, and Healthy Controls.

Abnormal facial emotion recognition has been proposed as a potential endophenotype for schizophrenia, as both patients with schizophrenia and their healthy relatives show difficulties in recognizing negative facial emotions. In psychiatric disorders, brain functioning is considered highly informative for endophenotype research. However, recent studies have raised questions about our current understanding of the neural correlates of emotion recognition across the schizophrenia spectrum, pointing out two major limitations in previous research. First, individual fMRI studies and meta-analyses hav

Brain Responses During Face Processing in Conduct Disorder: Considering Sex and Callous-Unemotional Traits.

BACKGROUND: Functional magnetic resonance imaging studies of conduct disorder (CD) have mostly been limited to males. Here, we examined whether male and female youths with CD showed similar or distinct alterations in brain responses to emotional faces, using a large sample of male and female youths with CD. We also investigated the influence of callous-unemotional (CU) traits. METHODS: Brain responses to angry, fearful, and neutral faces were assessed in 161 youths with CD (74 female) and 241 typically developing (TD) youths (139 female) ages 9 to 18 years. Depression vulnerability involves brain activity and connectivity changes consistent with cholinergic deviancy.

Behavioral and imaging studies suggests that emotional biases in the perception of faces associated with major depression disorder (MD) may be embedded within a broader sensory processing deficit. Increased cortical acetylcholine in MD suggest that this deficit may be related to abnormal attention modulation of sensory areas. It is not clear, however, whether these problems are a manifestation of the disease or whether they precede symptom onset. To investigate this, we applied functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to look for brain activity changes that participants with a family risk

Fear is more right lateralized than happiness and anger: Evidence for the motivational hypothesis of emotional face perception?

Facial emotion processing (FEP) tends to be right hemisphere lateralized. This right-hemispheric bias (RHB) for FEP varies within and between individuals. The aim of the present research was to examine evidence pertaining to the prominent theories of FEP hemispheric bias as measured by a half-emotional half-neutral (no emotion) chimeric faces task. FEP hemispheric bias was indexed using laterality quotients (LQs) calculated from a Chimeric Faces Task completed by 427 adults recruited from the general population aged 18-67 years. Participants indicated which of two identical (but mirrored) emot

Real Face Value: The Processing of Naturalistic Facial Expressions in the Macaque Inferior Temporal Cortex.

For primates, expressions of fear are thought to be powerful social signals. In laboratory settings, faces with fearful expressions have reliably evoked valence effects in inferior temporal cortex. However, because macaques use so called "fear grins" in a variety of different contexts, the deeper question is whether the macaque inferior temporal cortex is tuned to the prototypical fear grin, or to conspecifics signaling fear? In this study, we combined neuroimaging with the results of a behavioral task to investigate how macaques encode a wide variety of fearful facial expressions. In Experime

Mineralocorticoid receptor haplotype, estradiol, progesterone and emotional information processing.

BACKGROUND: Carriers of MR-haplotype 1 and 3 (GA/CG; rs5522 and rs2070951) are more sensitive to the influence of oral contraceptives (OC) and menstrual cycle phase on emotional information processing than MR-haplotype 2 (CA) carriers. We investigated whether this effect is associated with estradiol (E2) and/or progesterone (P4) levels. METHOD: Healthy MR-genotyped premenopausal women were tested twice in a counterbalanced design. Naturally cycling (NC) women were tested in the early-follicular and mid-luteal phase and OC-users during OC-intake and in the pill-free week. At both sessions E2 a

Developmental differences in the neural mechanisms of facial emotion labeling.

Adolescence is a time of increased risk for the onset of psychological disorders associated with deficits in face emotion labeling. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine age-related differences in brain activation while adolescents and adults labeled the emotion on fearful, happy and angry faces of varying intensities [0% (i.e. neutral), 50%, 75%, 100%]. Adolescents and adults did not differ on accuracy to label emotions. In the superior temporal sulcus, ventrolateral prefrontal cortex and middle temporal gyrus, adults show an inverted-U-shaped response to increasing

Face recognition within the reach of neurobiology and beyond it.

Recognition of faces and facial expression is an important component of non-verbal human social behaviour. It is believed to be older phylogenetically than verbal communication in man. Presumably we share basic brain mechanisms of face and mimic recognition with other primates. While palaeoanthropological artifacts indicate the existence of artistic creation in the sculptures and paintings of humans since the upper palaeolithic age (about 30,000 years ago), artistic interest in individual human faces is a rather recent development of mankind, which appeared about 4,500 years ago. Human face an

Misperceptions of facial emotions among youth aged 9-14 years who present multiple antecedents of schizophrenia.

Similar to adults with schizophrenia, youth at high risk for developing schizophrenia present difficulties in recognizing emotions in faces. These difficulties might index vulnerability for schizophrenia and play a role in the development of the illness. Facial emotion recognition (FER) impairments have been implicated in declining social functioning during the prodromal phase of illness and are thus a potential target for early intervention efforts. This study examined 9- to 14-year-old children: 34 children who presented a triad of well-replicated antecedents of schizophrenia (ASz), includin
