N-acetyl-L-cysteine reduces testis ROS in obese fathers but fails in protecting offspring from acquisition of epigenetic traits at cyp19a1 and IGF11/H19 ICR loci.

INTRODUCTION: Paternal nutrition before conception has a marked impact on offspring's risk of developing metabolic disorders during adulthoo … hen evaluated in terms of preventing the HFD-induced transmission of dysmetabolic traits from obese fathers to their offspring. The offspring were weaned onto a regular control diet until week 16 and then underwent metabolic evaluation. The methylation status of the genomic region IGFII/H19 and cyp19a1 in the offspring gDNA was also assessed using Sanger …

Cascading Effects of the Family Check-Up on Mothers' and Fathers' Observed and Self-Reported Parenting and Young Adult Antisocial Behavior: a 12-Year Longitudinal Intervention Trial.

Over a 12-year period, this study examined the effects of the Family Check-Up preventive intervention model on both observed and self-reported parenting behaviors of mothers and fathers as well as how those parenting behaviors were associated with young adult antisocial behavior. Teachers identified 641 early adolescent youth from school settings to be at elevated risk for the development of externalizing behavior and/or substance use. These youth and their families were randomly assigned to the Family Check-Up intervention model (consisting of an adaptive, multi-tiered model of support, inclu…

Inner child of the past: long-term protective role of childhood relationships with mothers and fathers and maternal support for mental health in middle and late adulthood.

PURPOSE: National longitudinal studies that investigate the long-term association between early family life and mental health in middle and older adulthood are limited. This study aims to fill the gap by examining the protective effect of positive childhood relationships with mothers and fathers and parental support against depression among women and men in middle and late adulthood. METHODS: The sample of 12,606 adults (7319 females; 5287 males) from the US Health and Retirement Study was nationally representative with the inclusion of 7 depression measures from 2008 to 2018. Two depression …

Understanding trait and sources effects in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and oppositional defiant disorder rating scales: mothers', fathers', and teachers' ratings of children from the Balearic Islands.

Confirmatory factor analysis was used to model a multitrait (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder [ADHD]-inattention, ADHD-hyperactivity/impulsivity, oppositional defiant disorder [ODD]) by multisource (mothers, fathers, and teachers) matrix to determine the convergent and discriminant validity of ratings by mothers, fathers, and teachers. Participants were 1,749 elementary school children from the island of Majorca in the Balearic Islands. The results showed good convergent validity for the measures for mothers' and fathers' ratings with moderate support for the measures discriminant vali…

The perceived influence of fathers' and non-gestational parents' experiences of postnatal depression on their relationship with their child and partner: a systematic review of qualitative studies and meta-synthesis.

INTRODUCTION: The role of the father/non-gestational parent has been found to be important in child development and wellbeing, but their mental health in the postnatal period is under-researched. Thus, this systematic review aimed to explore how postnatal depression was perceived to affect familial relationships. METHODS: A systematic review of qualitative literature was conducted, and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis guidelines were followed. Nine databases were searched for terms associated with fathers/non-gestational parents, postnatal depression, and …

Registered report: Predictors and trajectories of physical activity before, during, and following twin pregnancy from the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study.

Many pregnant women do not meet guidelines for physical activity, and women with twin pregnancies are less likely to be physically active compared with singleton pregnancies. During and following pregnancy, physical activity patterns and their related predictors have not been previously explored in women pregnant with twins. Therefore, we aimed to examine stability and change in leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) from pre-pregnancy, during pregnancy, and up to 18 months after childbirth in women pregnant with twins and identify predictors of their LTPA patterns. This study was based on data

Mendelian randomization analysis of maternal coffee consumption during pregnancy on offspring neurodevelopmental difficulties in the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study (MoBa).

BACKGROUND: Previous observational epidemiological studies have suggested that coffee consumption during pregnancy may affect fetal neurodevelopment. However, results are inconsistent and may represent correlational rather than causal relationships. The present study investigated whether maternal coffee consumption was observationally associated and causally related to offspring childhood neurodevelopmental difficulties (NDs) in the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study. METHODS: The observational relationships between maternal/paternal coffee consumption (before and during pregnanc

Tsugishige Kondo, The Father of Japanese Surgery: Exploring the History of Hideyo Noguchi's Hand Reconstruction With a Forearm Flap Before the Establishment of Plastic Surgery in Japan.

Hideyo Noguchi is one of the most famous scientists in Japan's history, and his portrait has adorned the ¥1,000 banknotes since 2004. He had a childhood burn injury resulting in severe hand scarring and contracture that plagued his early life and education. The resulting hand deformity required 3 separate reconstructions with the third and most complex surgery performed by Professor Tsugishige Kondo just before Noguchi's final medical doctor license examination in 1897. In this surgery, Kondo released the contractures using the first radial forearm flap performed in Japan long before the establ

Insufficient maternal iodine intake is associated with subfecundity, reduced foetal growth, and adverse pregnancy outcomes in the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Severe iodine deficiency impacts fertility and reproductive outcomes. The potential effects of mild-to-moderate iodine deficiency are not well known. The aim of this study was to examine whether iodine intake was associated with subfecundity (i.e. > 12 months trying to get pregnant), foetal growth, and adverse pregnancy outcomes in a mild-to-moderately iodine-deficient population. METHODS: We used the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study (MoBa) and included 78,318 pregnancies with data on iodine intake and pregnancy outcomes. Iodine intake was calculated using an extens

A man who inherited his SRY gene and Leri-Weill dyschondrosteosis from his mother and neurofibromatosis type 1 from his father.

We report on a man with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and Leri-Weill dyschondrosteosis (LWD). His father had NF1. His mother had LWD plus additional findings of Turner syndrome (TS): high arched palate, bicuspid aortic valve, aortic stenosis, and premature ovarian failure. The proband's karyotype was 46,X,dic(X;Y)(p22.3;p11.32). Despite having almost the same genetic constitution as 47,XXY Klinefelter syndrome, he was normally virilized, although slight elevation of serum gonadotropins indicated gonadal dysfunction. His mother's karyotype was mosaic 45,X[17 cells]/46,X,dic(X;Y)(p22.3;p11.32)[

Children fathered by men treated for testicular cancer conceived before, during and after chemotherapy--examination for evidence of congenital malformations, malignancies and immunological defects.

Hundred children of 64 fathers with testicular tumour treated from 1979 on at the National Institute of Oncology, Budapest were studied. Three groups were formed on the basis of the time of conception. 59 children were born before the illness of the fathers, 19 during the 9 pretreatment months and 22 during or after combined chemotherapy. Family anamnesis, perinatal and gestational data were listed, thereafter physical, laboratory, immunological, psychiatric, and, if required, radiological examinations were made. No difference was detectable in the somatic and psychiatric status of the three g…

Parental absence and suicidal ideation in depressed adolescents: Differential mediating roles of father-child vs. mother-child relationships and the moderating effect of sex.

BACKGROUND: Parental absence is a significant risk factor for adolescent suicidal ideation, yet the relational mechanisms and sex-specific vulnerabilities within clinical populations remain under-explored. This study investigated how different forms of parental absence relate to suicidal ideation through father-child and mother-child relationships, and whether these associations are moderated by adolescent sex. METHODS: A nationwide multi-center cross-sectional study was conducted from December 2020 to December 2023. We recruited 2467 clinically diagnosed depressed adolescents from 14 hospita

Prenatal maternal stress, child internalizing and externalizing symptoms, and the moderating role of parenting: findings from the Norwegian mother, father, and child cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined how parenting influences the associations between prenatal maternal stress and children's mental health. The objectives of this study were to examine the sex-specific associations between prenatal maternal stress and child internalizing and externalizing symptoms, and to assess the moderating effects of parenting behaviors on these associations. METHODS: This study is based on 15 963 mother-child dyads from the Norwegian Mother, Father, and Child Cohort Study (MoBa). A broad measure of prenatal maternal stress was constructed using 41 self-reported items

Thyroid hormone replacement therapy in pregnancy and motor function, communication skills, and behavior of preschool children: The Norwegian Mother, Father, and Child Cohort Study.

PURPOSE: Limited research has focused on the association between prenatal thyroid hormone replacement therapy (THRT) and motor function, communication skills, and behavior in preschool children. Here, we estimated the association between THRT during pregnancy and the first trimester and these developmental outcomes. METHODS: This study was based on the Norwegian Mother, Father, and Child Cohort Study (MoBa) and other national registries. We included mother-child pairs exposed to THRT during pregnancy (n = 663), after delivery (n = 728), or unexposed (n = 28 040). Exposure to THRT was defined

Microarray based analysis of an inherited terminal 3p26.3 deletion, containing only the CHL1 gene, from a normal father to his two affected children.

BACKGROUND: terminal deletions of the distal portion of the short arm of chromosome 3 cause a rare contiguous gene disorder characterized by growth retardation, developmental delay, mental retardation, dysmorphisms, microcephaly and ptosis. The phenotype of individuals with deletions varies from normal to severe. It was suggested that a 1,5 Mb minimal terminal deletion including the two genes CRBN and CNTN4 is sufficient to cause the syndrome. In addition the CHL1 gene, mapping at 3p26.3 distally to CRBN and CNTN4, was proposed as candidate gene for a non specific mental retardation because of

A SRY-HMG box frame shift mutation inherited from a mosaic father with a mild form of testicular dysgenesis syndrome in Turner syndrome patient.

BACKGROUND: Sex determining factor (SRY) located on the short arm of the Y chromosome, plays an important role in initiating male sex determination, resulting in development of testicular tissue. Presence of the SRY gene in females results in XY sex reversal and increased risk of gonadal germ cell tumours if the karyotype also includes the so-called GonadoBlastoma on the Y chromosome (GBY) region. The majority of mutations within the SRY gene are de novo affecting only a single individual in the family. The mutations within the high-mobility group (HMG) region have the potential to affect its
