Fear balance is maintained by bodily feedback to the insular cortex in mice.

How does the brain maintain fear within an adaptive range? We found that the insular cortex acts as a state-dependent regulator of fear that is necessary to establish an equilibrium between the extinction and maintenance of fear memories in mice. Whereas insular cortex responsiveness to fear-evoking cues increased with their certainty to predict harm, this activity was attenuated through negative bodily feedback that arose from heart rate decelerations during freezing. Perturbation of body-brain communication by vagus nerve stimulation disrupted the balance between fear extinction and maintena…

Children's sleepiness facilitates the effect of vicarious learning on the development of fear.

A substantial body of research demonstrates the importance of sleep for emotional processing and learning as well as the association between sleep problems and heightened anxiety. However, there is currently no research exploring the impact of sleepiness on vicariously learned fear responses. Experiment 1 (N = 38) first demonstrated no effect of trait or state sleepiness on children's (7-11 years of age) subjective ratings of fear. Experiment 2 (N = 42) and Experiment 3 (N = 46) used an established vicarious learning paradigm to demonstrate that trait sleepiness facilitated vicariously acquire…

Development of a questionnaire to assess fear of falling in children with neuromuscular diseases.

Fear of falling (FOF) indicates loss of confidence in the ability to perform daily living activities without falling. Although specific questionnaires do exist to assess FOF in different patient populations, any of them targets the pediatric patients with neuromuscular diseases which falling is a frequent symptom. This study aims to present the development of a self-report FOF questionnaire for children with neuromuscular diseases, pilot application of the questionnaire, and its preliminary psychometric properties. An International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF)-bas…

No differences in return of pain-related fear after extinction and counterconditioning.

Extinction-based protocols such as exposure-in-vivo successfully reduce pain-related fear in chronic pain conditions, but return of fear and clinical relapse often occur. Counterconditioning is assumed to attenuate return of fear, likely through changing the negative affective valence of the conditioned stimulus (CS). We hypothesized that counterconditioning would outperform extinction in mitigating return of pain-related fear and decrease CS negative affective valence. Healthy participants performed a conditioning task, in which 2 joystick movements (CSs+) were paired with a painful electrocu…

The association between fear of falling and orthostatic hypotension in older adults.

The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the fear of falling/the degree of fear of falling (FoF) and orthostatic hypotension (OH) in older adults. This cross-sectional study was conducted with 314 older outpatients. If the total score of the Falls Efficacy Scale-International scale was 16-19, 20-27 and ≥ 28, it was assumed that there was low FoF, moderate FoF and high FoF, respectively. OH was evaluated for the 1st (OH1) and 3rd (OH3) minutes, after transitioning from the supine position to standing. Participants were aged 65-93 years (mean age 74.2 ± 8.5 years) and 193 …

Body image disturbances, fear and associations with the amygdala in anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a severe illness with a high mortality rate which mainly affects young women. Studies found a localized volume loss of the amygdala in patients with AN, a brain region responsible for affective responses. Patients with AN were found to have body image distortions, and suffer from the comorbid disorders depression, anxiety disorder, and obsession. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to analyze a possible connection between comorbidities, body image disturbances, and the volume of the amygdala in patients with AN. METHODS: In this study 21 females suffe

Predonation fears identify young donors at risk for vasovagal reactions.

BACKGROUND: Extending existing research on the relationship between predonation fear of having blood drawn and risk for vasovagal reactions among young donors, this study assessed the predictive power of specific donation-related fears. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: After the health screening, high school whole blood donors (59.5% female) were randomly assigned into one of three groups. Group 1 (n = 881) answered a control question about their prior night's sleep. Group 2 (n = 911) answered the sleep question and a question about fear of having blood drawn. Group 3 (n = 924) answered the sleep qu…

Estradiol modulation of the renin-angiotensin system and the regulation of fear extinction.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is more prevalent in women than men, yet much remains to be determined regarding the mechanism underlying this sex difference. Clinical and preclinical studies have shown that low estradiol levels during extinction of fear conditioning in rodents (i.e., cue exposure therapy in humans) leads to poor extinction consolidation and increased fear during extinction recall. The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is also associated with stress-related pathologies, and RAS antagonists can enhance extinction consolidation in males. However, less is known about how estra…

Safety Fears Held by Caregivers about Relatives with Psychiatric Disorders.

In this period of post-deinstitutionalization, much of the care for people with severe psychiatric disorders (PD) is provided by their families. A primary stressor for caregivers is fears regarding their own safety and that of others, which has been virtually unexplored. To fill this gap, factors in three domains were assessed: (1) relatives with PD, (2) family caregivers, and (3) interactions with each other. This investigation was a secondary analysis of data obtained from a national survey of caregivers of adults with mental illness conducted by the National Alliance for Caregiving. A subsa…

Fear of Falling in Older Adults with Diabetes Mellitus: The IMIAS Study.

ABSTRACTSeveral determinants of developing fear of falling (FoF) overlap with the consequences of diabetes mellitus (DM). We compared the prevalence and severity of FoF in older adults with and without DM and identified which FoF determinants contribute to FoF severity in older adults with DM. We used Canadian baseline data from the International Mobility in Aging Study (IMIAS) which identified 141 older adults with DM (DM-group;age:68.88±2.80years) and 620 without DM (noDM-group;age:68.81±2.68years). FoF was quantified with Falls Efficacy Scale-International (FES-I). FoF determinants were eva…

Impact of stress, fear and anxiety on the nociceptive responses of larval zebrafish.

Both adult and larval zebrafish have been demonstrated to show behavioural responses to noxious stimulation but also to potentially stress- and fear or anxiety- eliciting situations. The pain or nociceptive response can be altered and modulated by these situations in adult fish through a mechanism called stress-induced analgesia. However, this phenomenon has not been described in larval fish yet. Therefore, this study explores the behavioural changes in larval zebrafish after noxious stimulation and exposure to challenges that can trigger a stress, fear or anxiety reaction. Five-day post ferti…

The relationship between fear extinction and resilience to drug-dependence in rats.

Some individuals recover quickly from stressful events, while others do not; this suggests that there are individual differences in stress resilience. Previous studies in rats have shown that an animal's ability to extinguish conditioned fear can predict their stress resilience. In the present study, we investigated whether rats who are resilient or vulnerable to fear conditioning would consistently show resilient or vulnerable behaviors in other behavioral tests. Male Wistar-Imamichi rats were subjected to a series of behavioral tests, including open field, conditioned place-preference (CPP),…

The Fears and Futures of Boy Victims of Sexual Abuse: An Analysis of Narratives.

Qualitative analysis of boys' narratives about child sexual abuse revealed several themes, including memories of the abuse, the disclosure and subsequent events, the healing journey, and a meta-theme titled "fear and safety." In this article, boys' (N = 19) experiences related to fear and safety and the healing journey are explored. The narratives provided a unique look at boys' road to recovery, perceptions of counseling, and hopes for their futures. Recommendations for counseling boy victims are discussed.

Postnatal development of neurotransmitter systems and their relevance to extinction of conditioned fear.

Remembering and forgetting are fundamental features of an organism. Extinction is a type of forgetting where there is a decrease in the significance and/or the meaning of an associative memory when elements of that memory no longer predict one another. The neural mechanisms underlying extinction of fear memories have been extensively studied in the laboratory because extinction processes are clinically relevant to exposure therapies that treat anxiety disorders. However, only in the last decade have we begun to unveil the similarities and differences in plasticity underlying extinction across …
