Iron sulfides mediated abiotic and biotic purification of wastewater: Reaction mechanisms and environmental effects.

Iron sulfides (FexSy), a key carrier of geochemical elements cycling, have attracted much attention in investigating their environmental chemical behaviors and pollutants transformation mechanisms due to the unique redox cycles of iron and sulfur species. However, the unclear interface reaction process‌, complex environmental factors, and multi-pollutants synergism ‌bring enormous challenges to reveal the roles of iron and sulfur species in environmental pollutants abatement. This review first introduces the classification, distribution regularities, and geochemical cycle mechanisms of FexSy i

Balancing efficacy and safety: Inorganic and organic Fe-Ca Co-interventions reduce oral Cd bioavailability from rice and their impacts on gut health.

Dietary iron (Fe) and calcium (Ca) intervention can reduce rice cadmium (Cd) bioavailability, however, the efficacy of various Fe-Ca combinations and impacts on gut health remain poorly understood. By exposing mice to Cd-containing rice alongside with Fe (100 mg Fe L⁻1 in drinking water) and Ca supplementation (4000 mg Ca kg-1 in diet), we investigated the effects of different forms of Fe-Ca co-intervention on Cd bioavailability, nutrition status, gut microbiota, and gut health. Results showed that Fe-Ca co-intervention reduced mouse liver and kidney Cd concentrations synergistically due to do

Control of sulfides in gravity sewer pipelines using coated sustained-release granules: Efficiency and mechanisms.

To address the challenges in sewer systems where continuous wastewater flow renders conventional iron salt dosing ineffective for long-term control, and where iron salts cause a sharp pH decline and structural weakening of pipelines, this study developed a coated sustained-release ferrous chloride granule (PMDI‑Fe2+). Under long‑term operation of laboratory‑scale reactors, the results showed that at a PMDI‑Fe2+ dosage of 0.045 % (w/v), the half‑maximal recovery time (RT50) of the sulfide production rate was 9 days; at a flow velocity of 0.6 m/s, iron ions were sustainably released for 45 hours

Ferrocene-functionalized NH2-UiO-66/MoO3 ratiometric electrochemical sensing platform for efficient monitoring of levofloxacin.

As a third-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic, levofloxacin (LEV) residue in biological and environmental samples has aroused widespread public concern. In this work, NH2-UiO-66 was in-situ synthesized via a solvothermal route on MoO3 surface. Subsequent covalent modification with ferrocene (Fc) afforded a ratiometric electrochemical sensor denoted as Fc-NH2-UiO-66/MoO3/GCE for LEV quantification. The anchored Fc units not only construct an internal self-calibration system with stable reference signal to greatly improve detection reliability, but also boost the electrical conductivity of th

New insights into efficient iron sulfide oxidation for arsenic immobilization by microaerophilic and acidophilic Fe(II)-oxidizing bacteria under micro-oxygen and acidic conditions.

Microbial-mediated FeS oxidation to Fe(Ⅲ) minerals via chemolithoautotrophic Fe(Ⅱ) oxidizers under pH/O₂ limitations engages As immobilization. However, this process is constrained under the dual stress of micro-oxygen and acidic conditions due to the critically diminished Fe(Ⅱ) oxidation capacity. Therefore, the interplay between Fe(Ⅱ) oxidation, carbon metabolism, and As immobilization in Fe(Ⅱ)-oxidizing bacteria under micro-oxygen and acidic conditions remains unclear. This study presents the first successful enrichment of microaerophilic and acidophilic Fe(II)-oxidizing bacteria (MAFeOB).

Bacterial nitrite production oxidizes Fe(II) bioremediating acidic abandoned coal mine drainage.

UNLABELLED: Passive remediation systems (PRSs) treating either acidic or neutral abandoned coal mine drainage (AMD) are colonized by bacteria that can bioremediate iron (Fe) through chemical cycling. Due to the low pH in acidic AMD, iron oxidation from soluble Fe(II) to precipitated Fe(III) is mainly directed by microbial oxidation. Less well described are biotic reactions that lead to iron remediation through abiotic secondary reactions. We describe here iron oxidation in acidic AMD that is mediated by the bacterial reduction of nitrate to nitrite followed by the geochemical oxidation of Fe(I

Thioarsenate immobilization by ferrous sulfides for geogenic contaminated groundwater rehabilitation: Mechanisms and kinetic constraints.

Thioarsenic prevails in sulfidic environments and exhibits higher mobility than arsenate (As(V)) and arsenite (As(III)), posing sustained challenge to the effectiveness of geogenic As-contaminated groundwater rehabilitation. Ferrous sulfide (FeS) minerals are proposed scavengers of monothioarsenate (MTA) in sulfidic groundwater, but the underlying mechanisms and kinetic processes remain elusive. This research presents new key evidence that MTA retention by FeS is constrained by a multi-reaction process: initial rapid adsorption, and subsequently slow binding to kinetics-controlled sites and ir

Monoribbed-functionalized iron(II) clathrochelates with optically active and/or terminal biorelevant group(s): synthesis, single-crystal X-ray diffraction and quantum-chemical characterization, and their inherent versus protein-induced chirality.

Novel monoribbed-functionalized iron(II) cage complexes with optically active and/or terminal biorelevant group(s) were designed and prepared by two-step nucleophilic substitution of their mono- and dichloroclathrochelate precursors. The single-crystal XRD structures of all of them and those of known leader iron(II)-centered cage bioeffector and of its reactive monochloroclathrochelate precursor were solved. These experimental data were used for theoretical quantum chemical calculations of electrostatic potentials for their 3D-shaped molecules. This allowed to localize the peripheral (exterior

Hollow Cu/Zn-MOF@Au/Ferrocene Nanoarchitectures: A Universal Leap from Colorimetric to Dual-Mode Colorimetric/Electrochemical Lateral Flow Assays.

Dual-mode lateral flow assays (LFAs) have gained significant attention, yet existing systems predominantly combine optical modalities, leaving hybrid colorimetric-electrochemical configurations underexplored despite their potential to achieve diagnostic synergy and minimize interference. Here, we present a universally compatible, low-cost lateral flow platform leveraging dual-signal nanohybrids for synchronized colorimetric-electrochemical detection. A hierarchically hollow Cu/Zn-metal-organic framework (MOF) bearing carboxyl functional groups was rationally designed to anchor gold nanoparticl

Moisture regulation induced nitrite-mediated Fe(II) oxidation for cadmium immobilization in paddy soils.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination in paddy soils poses significant risks to human health and food security, while traditional remediation methods may cause secondary pollution through external amendments. Nitrite oxidized Fe(II) to lepidocrocite and goethite, which immobilized Cd through adsorption and structural incorporation, effectively decreasing Cd mobility. Building on this mechanistic insight, a moisture regulation strategy was applied to enhance nitrite accumulation in paddy soil, and its role in Fe(II) oxidation for Cd immobilization was investigated. Metagenomic analysis identified nitrogen

Leptothrix ochracea genomes reveal potential for mixotrophic growth on Fe(II) and organic carbon.

UNLABELLED: Leptothrix ochracea creates distinctive iron-mineralized mats that carpet streams and wetlands. Easily recognized by its iron-mineralized sheaths, L. ochracea was one of the first microorganisms described in the 1800s. Yet it has never been isolated and does not have a complete genome sequence available, so key questions about its physiology remain unresolved. It is debated whether iron oxidation can be used for energy or growth and if L. ochracea is an autotroph, heterotroph, or mixotroph. To address these issues, we sampled L. ochracea-rich mats from three of its typical environm

A tumor-targeting and ROS-responsive iron-based T1 magnetic resonance imaging contrast agent for highly specific tumor imaging.

T1 contrast agents (CAs) exhibit outstanding capacity in enhancing the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast between tumor tissues and normal tissues for generating bright images. However, the clinical application of representative gadolinium(III) chelate-based T1 CAs is limited due to their potential toxicity and low specificity for pathological tissues. To obtain MRI CAs with a combination of low toxicity and high tumor specificity, herein, we report a reactive oxygen species (ROS)-responsive T1 CA (GA-Fe(II)-PEG-FA), which was constructed by chelating Fe(II) with gallic acid (GA), and m

Insight into sludge dewatering by periodate driven directly with Fe(Ⅱ): Extracellular polymeric substances solubilization and mineralization.

The production of waste activated sludge is expanding in tandem with the significant growth in the global population. It is important to explore sludge pretreatment technology to achieve sludge reduction. In this study, deep sludge dewatering was achieved by using Fe2+-catalyzed periodate (Fe2+/PI) conditioning. The result showed that capillary suction time was reduced by 48.27% under the optimum Fe2+ and PI dosages. ·OH, FeⅣ, O2·-, 1O2, and IO3· generated from the reaction between Fe2+ and PI, while ·OH (49.79%) and FeⅣ (47.76%) contributed significantly to sludge dewatering. Investigations o

PCBP2 knockdown promotes ferroptosis in malignant mesothelioma.

Malignant mesothelioma (MM) is still increasing worldwide. The pathogenesis depends on asbestos-induced iron accumulation, which eventually leads to ferroptosis-resistance of mesothelial cells via somatic mutations. Poly (rC)-binding proteins 1 and 2 (PCBP1/2) are recently recognized cytosolic Fe(II) chaperones. Here we studied the role of PCBP1/2 in rat/human mesothelial and MM cells as well as rat/human MM specimens. Normal peritoneal mesothelial cells in rats exhibited PCBP1 but not PCBP2 immunopositivity whereas primary/immortalized mesothelial cells showed PCBP1/2 immunopositivity. Rat MM

Iron phthalocyanine-derived nanozyme as dual reactive oxygen species generation accelerator for photothermally enhanced tumor catalytic therapy.

Nanozymes are artificial enzymes that mimic natural enzyme-like activities and show great promise for tumor catalytic therapy. However, new nanozymes with multiple catalytic activities for multifunctional nanotheranostic use remain challenging to design. Herein, for the first time, iron phthalocyanine (Fe(II)Pc) was assembled with poly(l-lactide-co-glycolide)-block-poly(ethylene glycol) to prepare an Fe(II)Pc assembly (denoted as Fe(II)Pc-A). The obtained Fe(II)Pc-A could be applied as a smart near-infrared (NIR) light-responsive nanotheranostic for simultaneous photoacoustic imaging-guided ph

Roles of oxidant, activator, and surfactant on enhanced electrokinetic remediation of PAHs historically contaminated soil.

Electrokinetic (EK) remediation technology can enhance the migration of reagents to soil and is especially suitable for in situ remediation of low permeability contaminated soil. Due to the long aging time and strong hydrophobicity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from historically polluted soil, some enhanced reagents (oxidant, activator, and surfactant) were used to increase the mobility of PAHs, and remove and degrade PAHs in soil. However, under the electrical field, there are few reports on the roles and combined effect of oxidant, activator, and surfactant for remediation of PA
