Embryonic ethanol exposure on zebrafish early development.

INTRODUCTION: Embryonic exposure to ethanol leads to a condition of physical, behavioral, and cognitive deficiencies named fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). The most severe variations are in fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), which is easier to diagnose and not studied in animal models. On the other side, the pFAS (partial fetal alcohol syndrome) includes cases of alcohol-related congenital disabilities and neurodevelopmental disorder with an inconclusive diagnosis. In recent years, the zebrafish has become a valuable model to study FASD and its variations. METHODS: This study characterizes…

Understanding the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure using three-dimensional facial imaging.

One of the (at least theoretically) most easily detectable features of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) is a distinct pattern of facial characteristics. However, in many children prenatally exposed to alcohol, these characteristics are expressed only subtly, making it difficult to correctly identify children with these disorders. To date, several studies have used conventional two-dimensional images to develop computerized programs assisting in the identification of individuals with FAS or FASD. However, many of the subtle features of prenatal alcohol ex…

Cortical miscommunication after prenatal exposure to alcohol.

We report on the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on resting-state brain activity as measured by magnetoencephalography (MEG). We studie … ymptoms and signs to specific brain areas. This may lead to new insights into the neuropathology of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

Astrocytes and Alcohol Throughout the Lifespan.

Evidence for involvement of astrocytes in several neurodegenerative disorders and in drug addiction has been emerging over the last 2 decades, but only in recent years have astrocytes been investigated for their roles in alcohol use disorder (AUD). As a result, there is a need to evaluate the existing preclinical literature that supports the involvement of astrocytes in the effects of alcohol exposure. Here, we review emerging evidence about responses of astrocytes to alcohol and the contributions of astrocytes to the development of AUD. We review studies of single-cell RNA sequencing with a f

A staged screening strategy for prenatal alcohol exposure and maternal risk stratification.

AIMS: To present an incremental process for a staged screening strategy to identify women at increased risk of having a child with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) and to enhance the management of women using alcohol during pregnancy. We include an illustrative example of the development of a screening component using an existing data set. METHODS: We describe a seven-step protocol to screen for alcohol use during pregnancy. The screening process begins with a one-question initial screen, followed by exposure assessment, maternal risk stratification to estimate risk for FASD, and conclu
