Virus removal by membrane bioreactors depends on virus-membrane and virus-foulant interactions. The adsorption of human adenovirus 2 (HAdV-2) on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane and a major membrane foulant, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), were measured in a quartz crystal microbalance. PURPOSE: To report a case of acute hydrops with intrastromal cleft in a patient of keratoconus with associated Marfan's syndrome, treated with intracameral injection of perfluoropropane (C(3)F(8)) gas.

Bilateral ulnar decubitus is described in a 69-year-old patient maintaining prone positioning after vitrectomy, membrane peeling, and perfluoropropane gas injection for the treatment of a macular hole. Patients should be warned to report any skin breakdown or ulnar paresthesias resulting from positioning and to change position frequently to allow weight bearing on other parts of the body. Patients with certain personality traits may be more likely to maintain correct positioning despite pain or injury to ensure surgical success.

Pars plana vitrectomy was performed on a six-year-old boy with complete retinal detachment associated with a morning glory disc of his left eye. Perfluorodecalin was injected to unfold the retina. During surgery, perfluorodecalin leaked repeatedly under the retina. This case demonstrates that a retinal hole in tissues lying within the optic disc anomaly provides a communication for fluid and perfluorodecalin between the subretinal space and vitreous cavity resulting in a rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in the morning glory syndrome.

In this work, oxidative metabolism of the new propellant, 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane to trifluoroacetic acid in man is shown to be minimal. Alternative propellants and refrigerants are under development to replace the currently used chlorofluorocarbons which lead to stratospheric ozone depletion. Vitreous surgery using an internal tamponading agent and chorioretinal adhesion is commonly used to repair retinal detachment associated with choroidal coloboma. The detachment may, however, recur if fluid continues to leak through a retinal defect in the area of the coloboma, despite internal tamponade. We present a case in which a recurrent retinal detachment associated with coloboma following vitreous surgery with SF6 was successfully repaired in outpatient surgery using perfluoroperhydrophenanthrene (Vitreon) and endolaser photocoagulation.

Artificial blood substitutes (ABS) containing the surfactant Pluronic F68 (F68) are reported to be cytotoxic to cell lines. Because of F68's reported impairment of granulocyte function, it was hypothesized that F68 was also responsible for the cytotoxicity of ABS, possibly as a result of a separable fraction of the F68, separation of which could be achieved using supercritical fluid fractionation (SFF). SFF employs gases, such as carbon dioxide, under high pressure to dissolve the parent compound, a process that is followed by step-by-step precipitation and recovery of the dissolved material.
