[Treatment of anteromedial coronoid facet fractures with open reduction and internal fixation through anteromedial approach].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the approach of open reduction and internal fixation for the treatment of anteromedial coronoid facet fractures and associated injury. METHODS: From July 2009 to August 2011, 6 coronoid anteromedial facet fractures were treated (4 males and 2 females, the average age was 32.6 years old, ranged from 19 to 49 years old) in our hospital. Three patients had fractures in the left side and 3 in the right(4 dominant sides and 2 non dominant sides). All the patients had close fractures. All the fractures were subtype 2 or subtype 3 of coronoid anteromedial facet fracture accor

Radiographic assessment of ligamentous injuries in distal radius fractures after open reduction and internal fixation.

OBJECTIVES: Concomitant ligamentous injury in distal radius fractures (DRF) may explain continued pain following surgery. The purpose of this study was to compare radiographic measurements assessing scaphoid translation in DRF after reduction, to measurements performed on normal radiographs. This may allow noninvasive evaluation of radiocarpal ligamentous integrity. METHODS: Fifty postoperative radiographs were evaluated. The distance between the ulnar border of the radial styloid and the radial border of the scaphoid was measured midway between the styloid tip and scaphoid base, and then div

7-year follow-up after open reduction and internal screw fixation in Bennett fractures.

BACKGROUND: Bennett fractures are unstable, and, with inadequate treatment, lead to osteoarthritis, weakness and loss of function of the first carpometacarpal joint. This study focuses on long-term functional and radiological outcomes after open reduction and internal fixation. METHODS: Between June 1997 and December 2005, 24 patients with Bennett fractures were treated with open reduction and internal fixation with screws at our center. Radiological and functional assessments including range of motion of the thumb and pinch and grip strength were performed 4 months post-procedure and at the

[Miniplate internal fixation and autogenous iliac bone graft in surgical treatment of old metatarsal fractures].

OBJECTIVE: To summarize the experience of treating old metatarsal fractures with surgery methods of miniplate internal fixation and autogenous iliac bone. METHODS: Between May 2009 and July 2010, 7 patients with old metatarsal fractures were treated surgically, including 5 multi-metatarsal fractures and 2 single metatarsal fractures. There were 5 males and 2 females aged from 25 to 43 years (mean, 33 years). The time from fracture to operation was 4-12 weeks. The X-ray films showed that a small amount of callus formed at both broken ends with shortening, angulation, or rotation displacement.

Influence of prior fasciotomy on infection after open reduction and internal fixation of tibial plateau fractures.

BACKGROUND: High-energy tibial plateau fractures may present with an acute or impending compartment syndrome requiring emergent fasciotomy. There is little information regarding the optimal management of the fasciotomy wound with respect to the subsequent definitive internal fixation of the tibial plateau fracture. The purpose of this study was to compare the rate of infection complication after internal fixation of tibial plateau fractures in patients requiring fasciotomy for compartment syndrome with patients in whom a fasciotomy was not required. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all ti

A method for internal fixation of unstable distal clavicle fractures: early observations using a new technique.

Unstable distal clavicle fractures often require open reduction and internal fixation. A variety of fixation methods have been used and are currently in use. None of the current fixation methods seem to be without problems. We present a new technique and early observations using a distal radius locking T-plate normally used for fixation of distal radius fractures.

Open reduction and internal fixation of calcaneal fractures with a low profile titanium calcaneal perimeter plate.

Forty-two intra-articular calcaneus fractures underwent open reduction and internal fixation with a low profile, titanium plate with a shape similar to the lateral aspect of the calcaneus. All 42 fractures healed without complication. There were no cases of hardware breakage. None of the patients were noted to have a loss of reduction. The plates were applied without bending and molded to the side of the calcaneus with tightening of the screws. No patient complained of symptomatic hardware during the follow-up period. With postoperative plain radiographs, the reduction was judged as anatomic i

Osteosynthesis of diaphyseal fractures of the radius and ulna using an internal fixator (PC-Fix). A prospective study.

Over a five year period, 121 forearm shaft fractures in 82 patients including nine non unions were fixed using the PC-Fix. Two patients died early; of the remaining 80 patients (119 bones) 96% were followed until bone healing. No non unions or late infections were observed in spite of the fact that no primary bone grafts were used except when treating non unions. In this clinical study with a high follow up rate using a newly developed internal fixator, encouraging overall results were achieved and the technology of monocortical locked screws was proven to be valid.

Open reduction and internal fixation of fracture of the posterior process of the talus: a case report and review of the literature.

A fracture of the posterior process of the talus is rare. In this report, we present a case of isolated displaced fracture of the posterior process of the talus, which was treated by early open reduction and internal fixation through a posteromedial approach. The fracture healed without evidence of avascular necrosis of either the posterior fragment or the talar body. The purpose of this article is to highlight the importance of early postoperative management of this uncommon type of fracture.

[CT Guided Stabilization of Fractures of Upper Thoracic Spine (Th 2-5) by Internal Fixator.].

The authors suggest a new method of stabilization of upper thoracie spine (Th 2 -Th 5) by an internal fixator. A safe and precise insertion of screws into the vertebrae from the posterior approach is performed by CT guided surgery. The surgery is carried out in a CT examination room providing conditions corresponding to an operating theatre. Of vital importance is the presence of an experienced roentgenologist. The screws are inserted through the basis of the transverse process and are firmly fixed in the verteral body. In case of a too narrow pedicle, its laterla wall usually gets broken and d

The reconstruction twisted wire-screws for internal fixation of two- and three-part fractures of the proximal humerus.

Using the implants for internal fixation of the proximal humeral fractures has several problems which lead to complications and poor results of the fracture treatment. Because there is no suitable implant for internal fixation of the fracture. Therefore, the reconstruction twisted wire was developed in 1990 to improve the results of the fracture treatment. Between 1990 and 1994, the reconstruction twisted wire was used in 31 patients whose ages ranged from 18 to 90 years. Sixteen patients had displaced two-part surgical neck fractures. Fifteen patients had displaced three-part fractures. Posto

[Monosegmental internal fixator instrumentation and fusion in treatment of fractures of the thoracolumbar spine. Indications, technique and results].

Dorsal fusion with the internal fixator has become the standard treatment of instabilities and deformities of the thoracolumbar spine. With our new device, the modular spine fixator (MSF), which has been specially designed for short-distance instrumentations, we have increasingly been treating unstable injuries of the thoracolumbar spine by one-level stabilization. Prerequisite is an accurate evaluation of the indication, including CT and MRI to assess the involvement of the intervertebral disc and the ligamental structures. The operative technique differs in some details from the procedure in

Intra-articular fractures of the distal tibia: surgical management by limited internal fixation and articulated distraction.

A series of 12 patients with severe intra-articular (pilon) fractures of the distal tibia were treated by open reduction and internal fixation of the principal articular fragments. Tibial length was restored and maintained by an articulated external fixator which allowed early mobilization of the joint, and associated fibular fractures were fixed internally. Of the patients, nine have been followed up for an average of 33 months (range 18-60 months); three are still undergoing active treatment. Results have been assessed using the scoring system devised by Karlsson and Peterson. Four patients
