BACKGROUND: Large defects of the anterior wall of the frontal sinus require closure using either autologous or foreign material. In cases of osteomyelitis, the reconstruction must be resistant to bacterial infection. Split-rib osteoplasty can be used in different sites.
METHODS: Two patients with malignant sinonasal tumours underwent repeated treatment, and subsequently developed osteomyelitis of the frontal bone. After adequate therapy, a large defect of the anterior wall persisted. Reconstruction was performed using the split-rib method. The literature on this topic was reviewed.
RESULTS: …

INTRODUCTION: Reconstruction of skull base defects are determined by size, location, and complexity of the defect.
METHODS: Case report.
CASE DISCUSSION: An 11-year old girl presented with a right frontoethmoidal encephalocele after an episode of meningitis. An endoscopic approach was performed with a Draf III to provide exposure. The skull base defect extended superolateral over the orbit, which limited the choice of reconstructive options. The defect was successfully repaired with a single layer onlay graft of bovine collagen matrix.
CONCLUSIONS: Single layer repairs using commercial biom

In contrast to more common nasal and cervical lesions, the frontotemporal pit is a rarely encountered lesion that is often associated with a dermoid and may track intracranially. Due to delays in diagnosis, the propensity to spread intracranially, and the risk of infection, awareness of these lesions and appropriate diagnosis and management are important. The authors present 2 cases of frontotemporal pits from a single institution. Epidemiology, presentation, and management recommendations are discussed.

BACKGROUND: In cases of surgery for syndromic craniosynostosis with posterior flattering, it is not possible to achieve sufficient expansion of the skull through fronto-orbital advancement alone. Although it is necessary to expand the occipital region, the surgery is risky and highly invasive. We applied the distraction osteogenesis technique for skull expansion and performed occipital expansion and fronto-orbital advancement in succession.
METHODS: Three patients with syndromic craniosynostosis (2 with Crouzon syndrome, 1 with Pfeiffer syndrome) were treated in Juntendo University Hospital b

Unilateral coronal synostosis is the common appellation for premature, one-sided fusion of the frontoparietal suture-the most common cause of synostotic frontal plagiocephaly. However, frontal asymmetry can also result from isolated fusion across the anterior cranial base without involvement of the frontoparietal suture. This article describes three patients with localized synostosis of the frontosphenoidal suture, the medial extension of the coronal ring. Two patients were initially misdiagnosed as having unilateral coronal synostosis and the other as having deformational frontal plagiocephal

Frontonasal dysplasia, a nonspecific defect in a developmental field complex, and craniosynostosis usually occur as isolated sporadic events. Cohen recently described a syndrome that includes both of these defects, which he called "craniofrontonasal dysplasia." We report a three-generation family in which five individuals (four females, one male) have varying degrees of frontonasal dysplasia and craniosynostosis. The mode of inheritance is unclear and possible explanations include autosomal dominant with sex-influenced expression, X-linked dominant, and metabolic interference. This family and

OBJECTIVES: The modified endoscopic Lothrop (Draf III) procedure requires reliable mucosal coverage of the exposed bone within the frontal neo-ostium to prevent post-operative restenosis. Free mucosal grafts are effective but difficult to secure due to limited access and absent anchoring sites. We describe a novel use of bioabsorbable steroid-eluting implants as a pragmatic approach to achieve mucosal graft fixation.
METHODS: Following completion of a Draf III frontal sinusotomy, a PROPEL™ implant is deployed over a free mucosal graft within the frontal neo-ostium. Endoscopic assessment is pe

Trauma has become the most common pathologic entity requiring operative intervention in the frontal sinus. Treatment has evolved from simple … ollowing traumatic defects to the canine frontal sinus. Following the loss of anterior or posterior frontal bone, Proplast provided excellent cosmetic reconstruction over a period of one year. Resistance to infection was good, reaction with dura and brain was absent, and cerebrospinal fluid leaks sealed rapidly. In contrast to other alloplastic materials, rapi …

BACKGROUND: Pneumosinus dilatans of the frontal sinus is a very rare condition in which deformity is caused by progressive enlargement of the brow ridges and lower forehead.
PATIENTS: Etiology of the reported two cases was unknown although some hypotheses have been presented.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: We corrected the aesthetic deformity using an osteoplastic flap and removing horizontal bone chips from the anterior wall of the frontal sinus. Postaoperative results were satisfactory. In one case, obliteration of the sinus with fat was necessary, because of polypous mucosa.

Bilateral Osteomyelitis following frontal sinusitis is a rare complication in the antibiotic era. The main risk of a progredient course is mainly the formation of external subperiostal, epidural, subdural abscesses or brain abscesses with potentially life-threatening complications. This is a report on a patient who presented in our department with progredient cephalgia and swelling in the area around the glabella and frontal sinus. Macroscopical examination revealed septum deviation to the right side and nasal polyposis of the right nasal passage. A computed tomography of the paranasal sinuses

Accurate sex prediction of skeletonised human remains excludes one-half of the population, enabling a more focussed search of missing persons' files. The skull is useful in sex assessment of skeletonised remains; however, its fragmentation precludes the use of all conventional craniofacial markers. The frontal bone may be recovered intact in fragmented remains and the sinuses therein may be useful in sex differentiation. A total of 100 paranasal sinus view radiographs of 50 males and females each were evaluated for potential differences in frontal sinus configuration following the methods of Y…

The most commonly used techniques for frontal sinus obliteration involve the implantation of an autogenous tissue graft: either fat, muscle or bone. Lyophilized allogenic cartilage due to its unique properties, such as the tendency to ossification and resistance to volume reduction, can be used as the material of choice for sinus obliteration. A clinical and radiological study of 66 patients operated on for frontal sinus fractures, between January 1 1988 through December 31 1995 was undertaken. Variables recorded included the aetiological factors, the clinical and radiological fracture feature

PURPOSE: Fractures of the frontal sinus region frequently need operative intervention in the form of reconstruction and obliteration. This requires removing the anterior table of the frontal sinus to gain access to the floor as well as the entire lateral extent of the sinus. Prior techniques to obtain this access have involved fabrication of preoperative radiographic templates. This article describes a technique of perimeter marking for delineating the precise location of the frontal sinus perimeter without the use of a radiographic template.
METHODS: A 7-cm bayonet forceps is used for the pe

Intracranial pseudolymphoma is a rare tumor of the central nervous system. A 35-year-old woman presented with a frontal subcutaneous tumor. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a left frontal meningeal tumor involving subcutaneous tissue without bone involvement. The mass was completely removed and the histological aspect of all tumor sections was that of a lymphoid hyperplasia with polyclonal proliferation. These findings were characteristic of pseudolymphoma defined as a hyperplasia of follicular and diffuse lymphoid type with assessment of its polyclonality by immunophenotyping on frozen sec

As a postoperative complication in nasoethmoid-orbital fractures, nasal depression often occurs. The cause of this is an overlooked left nasal septum fracture. By reducing and fixing the nasal septum, nasal depression could have been avoided. Kirschner wire is useful for the fixation of the nasal septum, and it is fixed with zygomatic bone or/and frontal process of the maxillary bone. Three cases of nasoethmoid-orbital fractures were treated with this method. Kirschner wire fixation of the nasal septum is a simple and an easy method and can avoid unnecessary bone graft.

The fibrous dysplagia is a rare benign osseous pathology of unknown aetiology. It presents an incidence of craniofacial affectation of a 10% in its monostotic variety and a 100% in the poliostotic. The temporal bone implication is very rare, being usually referred in the monostotic variety. The diagnosis is based on radiology (CT) and histology. The majority of the authors agree in a conservative treatment. We present three clinical cases of monostotic fibrous dysplagia with craniofacial affectation, two of them in the temporal bone and another one in the frontal bone.
