Rhinogenous complications may manifest in the region of the orbits, bone or soft parts of the wall of the frontal sinus, or endocranially. With regard to orbital complications, a differentiation is made between edema, periostitis, subperiosteal abscess and phlegmon--depending on severity and extent. A possible sequela of frontal sinusitis may be osteomyelitis. If the frontal bone is involved, there is a danger that the infection may spread to the endocranium via medullary spaces and blood vessels. The diagnostic basis for deciding appropriate treatment is CT or MRI. While orbital edema and per…

A series of 54 patients treated for frontal sinus fractures at Charity Hospital, New Orleans, from 1967-77 is presented. There were a large number of suppurative complications related to the various medical and surgical managements. Initial treatments included: observation (15), exploration and open reduction (22), obliteration (16), and ablation (1). Four patients with open fractures were not explored and developed recurrent frontal sinusitis; one progressed to an osteomyelitis. Two with posterior table fractures were not explored and developed meningitis (one was then obliterated and develop…

BACKGROUND Anti-TNF-alpha therapies were the first class of biologics to be used in treatment of moderate to severe IBD. Immunosuppression status that develops from using anti-TNF-a therapies increases the risk of serious and opportunistic infections. We present here a rare case of serious infection that developed in an IBD patient while on anti-TNF therapy. CASE REPORT Our patient was a 14-year-old boy with a history of chronic sinusitis and ulcerative colitis who had been on infliximab therapy for the last 3 years. He presented with facial swelling and worsening constant frontal headache. Im

INTRODUCTION: Silent sinus syndrome (SSS) is a rare entity, almost exclusively involving the maxillary sinus, frontal location being very ra … le to be weakened by atelectasis. The study suggests that frontal SSS can be an etiology in chronic frontal sinusitis. Preoperative findings of IFS retraction are useful for surgical restoration of frontal sinus ventilation, relieving chronic pain and preventing complications.

OBJECTIVES: Frontal sinus obliteration is often performed using fat, autologous bone or a range of synthetic materials. This paper reports t … ng beta-tricalcium phosphate putty for treatment of a cerebrospinal leak, mucocele and recalcitrant frontal sinusitis. All patients had disease resolution, with no intra- or post-operative complications reported in the 16.5-month follow up. Post-operative computed tomography scans confirmed native bone obliteration of the frontonasal ducts in all patients.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: A pneumocoele is a pathologically expanding, air-containing paranasal sinus. Pneumocoeles are uncommon entities, with very few cases reported in the literature. The most plausible aetiological theory is that of a one-way valve effect allowing air into the sinus under increased pressure without pressure equilibration.
METHODS: Review of a frontal sinus pneumocoele caused by a type III frontal cell and intersinus septal cell.
RESULTS: We present a patient with chronic sinusitis who developed a pneumocoele of her left frontal sinus with erosion into her orbit. This patient

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The endoscopic Lothrop procedure has proved to be an effective intranasal approach to the treatment of frontal sinus disorders. When successful, the operation re-establishes normal or near-normal frontal sinus function (especially physiologic evacuation of frontal sinus contents). Recently, several authors have proposed the use of this procedure for the treatment of several disease processes in addition to chronic frontal sinusitis.
RECENT FINDINGS: Although follow-up has been limited, the endoscopic Lothrop procedure has proved effective in the treatment of patients with t…

The evaluation of frontal sinus similarity is one way to detect biological relationships, especially in small groups, including families of historically known personalities. However, possibilities for studying this issue are currently limited. This contribution deals with the frontal sinuses of a rare osteological sample with known genealogical data, members of the noble Swéerts-Sporck family from the 17th to 20th centuries. The aim is to verify whether the frontal sinuses reflect documented family relationships. Basic dimensions of the frontal sinus such as total surface area and volume, and

A rare complication of frontal sinusitis includes Pott's puffy tumor. It manifests as a swelling of the forehead due to the presence of a subperiosteal abscess secondary to osteomyelitis of the frontal bone. A timely diagnosis allows for an early, intensive medical and surgical treatment, which is critical to prevent serious intracranial complications. Here we describe the case of a 12-year-old boy with Pott's puffy tumor as a complication of pansinusitis. This case was a diagnostic challenge; however, a timely treatment allowed for a favorable clinical course.

OBJECTIVE: To review the entity of respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma of the paranasal sinuses using an illustrative case example of frontal sinus hamartoma.
METHODS: Case report with review of the literature.
RESULTS: Respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma represents a benign process that is generally cured with conservative surgical resection of the involved area. Nevertheless, as shown in our case example, this can be a locally aggressive process that can lead to significant morbidity if left untreated.
CONCLUSION: Hamartomas of the paranasal sinuses represent a rare enti

Sinonasal fibrosarcoma is an infrequently occurring malignant neoplasm. It usually presents with nasal obstruction and epistaxis, as do other sarcomas in this region. The final diagnosis is based on the histopathologic and immunohistochemical examination. We report a case involving a 47-year-old woman with a 2-year history of left nasal obstruction and proptosis, as well as diplopia for the 2 months preceding her visit. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed a neoplasm occupying the left nasal cavity, ethmoid sinuses, and bilateral frontal sinuses. The neoplasm also was erod

The hydrogel scleral buckle is a hydrophilic implant that is characterized by progressive expansion and can present with secondary orbital changes. The authors present a unique case of hydrogel-induced erosion of the orbital roof into the frontal sinus, with formation of a sino-orbital communication that resulted in frontal sinusitis and adjacent cerebritis. The hydrogel material is radiologically characterized as a fluid-filled hypertense T2 mass with rim enhancement and peripheral calcification. Awareness of late orbital complications from the hydrogel material is important to distinguish th…

Varicella is the manifestation of primary infection with the varicella-zoster virus, mainly affecting preschool and school-aged children. The children suffer from a generalised, vesicular rash and fever. Despite the infection's typically non-threatening course, a variety of severe complications have been described. The authors present the case of a female infant suffering from varicella and developing preseptal cellulitis with a frontal abscess while being treated with intravenous antibiotics. Otorhinolaryngology consultation was sought since the clinical image was highly suggestive for sinusit

Osteomas are the most frequent benign tumor of the paranasal sinuses. The commonest site is the frontal sinus but intraorbital extension of frontal osteoma is rare. Here, the authors report a 15-year-old adolescent boy who presented with left superior orbital rim swelling and ptosis. Waters radiography and computed tomographic scan revealed a bone density mass in the left frontal sinus with upper orbital wall extension. The tumor was removed via open eyebrow incision. The histopathologic evaluation was consistent with osteoma.

Pneumosinus dilatans is a term used to describe enlargement of one or more paranasal sinuses without radiological evidence of localized bone destruction, hyperostosis, or mucous-membrane thickening. To date, many cases have been reported that involved frontal, ethmoid, sphenoid, and maxillary sinus. However, no case has been reported that involved all paranasal sinuses. Our case involved mastoid air cells as well as all paranasal sinuses. It is named pneumosinus dilatans multiplex by us. This is the first case to be reported in English literature that has this syndromic condition of pneumosinu

Meningiomas originating in the paranasal sinuses are rare. These tumors are thought to arise from embryonal arachnoid nests which were pinched off and left behind during embryonic development. We have described various radiographic findings of two patients with meningioma arising in the paranasal sinuses (frontal sinus origin in a 65-year-old female, and sphenoid sinus origin in a 26-year-old female). The paranasal origin of meningioma was accurately determined on the basis of CT and arteriography. A review of the 11 cases previously reported and our cases indicates that there are no specific
