Poliomyelitis and the post-polio syndrome: exercise capacities and adaptation--current research, future directions, and widespread applicability.

Poliomyelitis is an acute viral disease that attacks the brain and the ventral horn of the spinal cord. Damage to the lower motor neurons usually results in atrophy and weakness of muscle groups, perhaps paralysis and possibly deformity. A second type, bulbar poliomyelitis, infects the medulla oblongata and may result in dysfunction of the swallowing mechanism along with respiratory and circulatory distress. Minor forms of poliomyelitis result in fever, sore throat, headache, and upper body stiffness, but leave no significant atrophy or paralysis. The purpose of this paper is to review post-po

Antigenic variant of swine influenza virus causing proliferative and necrotizing pneumonia in pigs.

A new antigenic variant of swine influenza virus was isolated from the lungs of pigs experiencing respiratory problems in 7 different swine herds in Quebec. Pigs of different ages were affected, and the main clinical signs were fever, dyspnea, and abdominal respiration. Coughing was not a constant finding of the syndrome. At necropsy, macroscopic lesions included the overall appearance of pale animals, general lymphadenopathy, hepatic congestion, and consolidation of the lungs. Histopathologic findings were mainly proliferative pneumonia with a significant macrophage invasion, necrotic inflamm

Quantification of Aerosol Particle Concentrations During Endoscopic Sinonasal Surgery in the Operating Room.

BACKGROUND: Recent indirect evidence of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) transmission during endoscopic endonasal procedures has highlighted the dearth of knowledge surrounding aerosol generation with these procedures. As we adapt to function in the era of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) a better understanding of how surgical techniques generate potentially infectious aerosolized particles will enhance the safety of operating room (OR) staff and learners. OBJECTIVE: To provide greater understanding of possible SARS-CoV-2 exposure risk during endonasal surgeries

Self Management Activation Randomised Trial for Prostatitis (SMART-P): study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Chronic prostatitis otherwise known as chronic pelvic pain syndrome is a common urological diagnosis that causes many men significant morbidity and has a detrimental effect on their quality of life. Standard treatment with antibiotics and simple analgesia are often ineffective and many patients are managed by the chronic pain services.Cognitive behavioural therapy has been shown to be helpful in the management of many chronic diseases and has recently been proposed as an effective treatment for chronic prostatitis. Furthermore, a self management programme administered to groups of

A novel and simple immunocapture assay for determination of gelatinase-B (MMP-9) activities in biological fluids: saliva from patients with Sjögren's syndrome contain increased latent and active gelatinase-B levels.

Here we describe a new principle for accessing the activity of the different members of the human matrix-metalloproteinases (MMPs) by a colorimetric assay. Using protein engineering, a modified pro-urokinase was made in which the activation sequence, normally recognized by plasmin (ProArgPheLys/IleIleGlyGly), was replaced by a sequence that is specifically recognized by MMPs (ArgProLeuGly/IleIleGlyGly). The active urokinase resulting from the activation of this modified pro-urokinase by MMPs can be measured directly using a chromogenic peptide substrate for urokinase. The assay has been made s

Phenotypic variation in Blastocystis sp. ST3.

BACKGROUND: Blastocystis, is one of the most common human intestinal protozoan, which has many conflicting reports on its pathogenic role. Gut conditions which obviously varies in asymptomatic individuals, symptomatic and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients in terms of gut flora, pH, osmotic pressure and water potentials could play an important role in its pathogenicity. The present study is the first study to investigate phenotypic characteristics of Blastocystis sp. ST3 isolated from asymptomatic, symptomatic and IBS isolates. METHODS: A total of 8 Blastocystis isolates were obtained fr

Structured pelvic floor physiotherapy rehabilitation for low anterior resection syndrome in colorectal cancer: An Australian feasibility study.

PURPOSE: Low Anterior Resection Syndrome (LARS) is a common and debilitating outcome of sphincter-preserving surgery for colorectal cancer, severely affecting quality of life. While pelvic floor rehabilitation (PFR) is recommended as a conservative treatment, access to structured care is limited. This study assessed the feasibility and acceptability of a structured, physiotherapist-led PFR programme in an Australian outpatient setting, and explored the within-person changes in bowel function and quality of life. METHODS: A non-randomised, single-arm prospective study was conducted at Concord

Tripartite prehabilitation of patients with acute myeloid leukaemia and high-risk myelodysplastic syndromes during intensive chemotherapy before allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (COHABILIT): protocol for an innovating prospective multicentre study.

OBJECTIVES: Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) and high-risk myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are often treated with intensive chemotherapy followed by allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). The pretransplant treatment results in a general deterioration of the patient's health and quality of life. Furthermore, allo-HSCT can be responsible for significant toxicity with risks of graft-versus-host disease (GvHD). Developing strategies to prevent physical deconditioning, undernutrition and psychological distress could help maintain a satisfactory general state of health before

Oxygen-sensing by arterial chemoreceptors: Mechanisms and medical translation.

Acute O2 sensing is necessary for the activation of cardiorespiratory reflexes (hyperventilation and sympathetic activation), which permit the survival of individuals under hypoxic environments (e.g. high altitude) or medical conditions presenting with reduced capacity for gas exchange between the lung alveoli and the blood. Changes in blood O2 tension are detected by the arterial chemoreceptors, in particular the carotid body (CB), which act in concert with the adrenal medulla (AM) to facilitate rapid adaptations to hypoxia. The field of arterial chemoreception has undergone a considerable ex

Exome sequencing confirms the clinical diagnosis of both joubert syndrome and klinefelter syndrome with keratoconus in a han Chinese family.

INTRODUCTION: Joubert syndrome a rare genetic disorder, is characterized by abnormalities in the development of the central nervous system with "molar signs" on magnetic resonance imaging of the brain and accompanied by cerebellar vermis hypoplasia, ataxia, hypotonia, and developmental delay. Keratoconus (KC) is a kind of genetically predisposed eye disease that causes blindness characterized by a dilated thinning of the central or paracentral cornea conically projected forward, highly irregular astigmatism, and severe visual impairment. Klinefelter syndrome is caused by an extra X chromosome

[Rethink the panic disorder].

INTRODUCTION: We propose some reflexions on the validity of the conceptualization of panic disorder, its nosographical place, and its clinical homogeneity, through the study of the frequency of some of its psychiatric comorbidities. BACKGROUND: To define a panic attack, DSM IV requires a number of symptoms which vary from four to 13. However, some patients suffer from panic attacks with less than four symptoms (paucisymptomatic attacks) and which fill the other criteria of panic disorder. These patients would have a biological vulnerability, familial antecedents, and a treatment response whic

Occupational performance patterns in children with paediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Paediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome (PANS) is a neuroimmune condition characterised by episodic exacerbations and remissions. This study investigates the impact of PANS on children's occupational performance during these phases, using the Vineland Adaptive Behaviour Scale (VABS). Understanding these variations is crucial for developing tailored interventions and managing the condition effectively. METHODS: A two-period bidirectional case-crossover design was employed to assess occupational performance in children with PANS at exacerbation (T-E) and remission (T-R) p

Rapid Protection from COVID-19 in Nonhuman Primates Vaccinated Intramuscularly but Not Intranasally with a Single Dose of a Vesicular Stomatitis Virus-Based Vaccine.

The ongoing pandemic of coronavirus (CoV) disease 2019 (COVID-19) continues to exert a significant burden on health care systems worldwide. With limited treatments available, vaccination remains an effective strategy to counter transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome CoV 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Recent discussions concerning vaccination strategies have focused on identifying vaccine platforms, number of doses, route of administration, and time to reach peak immunity against SARS-CoV-2. Here, we generated a single-dose, fast-acting vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV)-based vaccine derived from th

Jael syndrome, or the nasty arrow.

The term "Jael syndrome" is a symbolic analogy referring to penetrating craniofacial trauma caused, intentionally or accidentally, by blade or similar weapon in which the foreign body is kept in-situ during initial management. It is rare in clinical and medicolegal practice, but is potentially life-threatening or with neurologic and functional impact. Its name comes from an episode in the Book of Judges in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) in which Jael, a woman, kills the Canaanite general Sisera by hammering a tent peg through his temple while he is asleep, thus ensuring the liberation of the

"IL-40: A novel immunoregulatory axis at the crossroads of inflammation, tissue remodeling, and cancer immunity".

Interleukin-40 (IL-40), encoded by the C17orf99 gene, is a recently identified B cell-associated cytokine that bridges innate and adaptive immune responses. Since its discovery in 2017, IL-40 has emerged as a pleiotropic immunoregulatory factor with broad implications in human diseases. Elevated IL-40 levels are consistently reported across systemic and organ-specific autoimmune disorders, including rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjögren's syndrome, systemic sclerosis, and autoimmune thyroid diseases. In these conditions, IL-40 correlates with disease activity, inflammator

Anxiety-like behavior in Rett syndrome: characteristics and assessment by anxiety scales.

BACKGROUND: Rett syndrome (RTT) is a severe neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by regression of language and motor skills, cognitive impairment, and frequent seizures. Although the diagnostic criteria focus on communication, motor impairments, and hand stereotypies, behavioral abnormalities are a prevalent and disabling component of the RTT phenotype. Among these problematic behaviors, anxiety is a prominent symptom. While the introduction of the Rett Syndrome Behavioral Questionnaire (RSBQ) represented a major advancement in the field, no systematic characterization of anxious behavior

Prosodic skills in Spanish-speaking adolescents and young adults with Down syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Down syndrome (DS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder of genetic origin with a cognitive-behavioural profile that distinguishes it from other syndromes. Within this profile, language difficulties are particularly marked, having been more studied in childhood than in adulthood. More generally, there is a paucity of research on the prosodic skills of individuals with DS, despite the relevance of this linguistic component for effective communication. AIMS: This study aimed to analyse, for the first time, the prosodic profile of Spanish-speaking teenagers and young adults with DS. We hy

Mental Health Assessments for Resettled Afghan Children and Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Since August 2021, over 90,000 Afghan evacuees have been resettled in the USA. An estimated 40% of evacuees are under the age of 18. These youth are at risk for poor mental health because of migration-related trauma and stress. Health care providers need screening tools to accurately assess mental health problems in this population. The objective of this study was to identify and develop culturally appropriate screening tools for mental health problems facing resettled Afghan youth ages 10-17. METHODS: A total of 80 Afghan refugees in the Northeast USA and 4 Afghan mental health e

Habituation After Deep Brain Stimulation in Tremor Syndromes: Prevalence, Risk Factors and Long-Term Outcomes.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the thalamus is an effective treatment for medically refractory essential, dystonic and Parkinson's tremor. It may also provide benefit in less common tremor syndromes including, post-traumatic, cerebellar, Holmes, neuropathic and orthostatic tremor. The long-term benefit of DBS in essential and dystonic tremor (ET/DT) often wanes over time, a phenomena referred to as stimulation "tolerance" or "habituation". While habituation is generally accepted to exist, it remains controversial. Attempts to quantify habituation have revealed conflicting reports. Placebo eff
