[Orthotopic liver transplantation in adult patients with cadaveric grafts. Experience of the Fundeni Center of General Surgery and Liver Transplantation].

We analyze the experience of the Center of General Surgery and Liver Transplantation from the Fundeni Clinical Institute (Bucharest, Romania) regarding orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) in adult recipients, with whole liver grafts from cadaveric donors, between April 2000 (when the first successful LT was performed in Romania) and December 2004. This series includes 37 OLTs in adult recipients (16 women and 21 men, aged between 29-57 years--average 46 years). Other two LT with whole liver cadaveric grafts and two reduced-size LT were performed in children; also, in the same period, due to…

A Generalized Full-to-Partial Registration Framework of 3D Point Sets for Computer-Aided Orthopedic Surgery.

OBJECTIVE: The precise alignment of full and partial 3D point sets is a crucial technique in computer-aided orthopedic surgery, but remains a significant challenge. This registration process is complicated by the partial overlap between the full and partial 3D point sets, as well as the susceptibility of 3D point sets to noise interference and poor initialization conditions. METHODS: To address these issues, we propose a novel full-to-partial registration framework for computer-aided orthopedic surgery that utilizes reinforcement learning. Our proposed framework is both generalized and robust

Follow-up of thrombin generation after prostate cancer surgery: global test for increased hypercoagulability.

Recent studies provided evidence that evaluation of thrombin generation identifies patients at thrombotic risk. Thrombin generation has a central role in hemorrhage control and vascular occlusion and its measurement provides new metrics of these processes providing sufficient evaluation of an individual's hemostatic competence and response to anticoagulant therapy. The objective of the study is to assess a new measure of hypercoagulability that predisposes to venous thromboembolism in the postoperative period after radical prostatectomy. Reduction of free radical generation minimises lower limb swelling following femoropopliteal bypass surgery.

Oxygen-derived free radicals have been implicated as contributors to the development of lower limb oedema observed after femoropopliteal bypass grafting. This study investigates the occurrence of free radical-induced lipid peroxidation after this operation and the possible effects of allopurinol (xanthine oxidase inhibitor) in reducing free radical injury in order to minimise lower leg oedema. Twenty-nine patients undergoing femoropopliteal bypass surgery were randomised in a double blind fashion into two groups; those in one were given allopurinol 200 mg orally (n = 15) at 24 h and 2 h preope

A Blind Spot in the Algorithm: Assessing Bias in Artificial Intelligence-Generated Images of Plastic Surgery Patients.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) models can inherit biases from their training data, a phenomenon documented in other fields, including the corporate and legal realms. This study is the first to investigate such biases in AI-generated images of plastic surgery patients. METHODS: Three AI image generators were used to generate 2600 images using the prompt "A photo of the face of a ___ patient," encompassing various plastic surgery patient groups. Images were independently assessed by 3 blinded raters for demographic factors and compared with real-world patient demographics via Fisher e

A semi-automated design workflow for patient-specific implants in orthognathic surgery using generative design.

Patient-specific implants (PSIs) have demonstrated improved outcomes and have reduced the complexity of surgery in orthognathic surgery. However, the design process for PSIs is time-consuming and complicated, leading to high costs that hinder its widespread adoption. The aim of this study was to develop a novel workflow for designing PSIs using generative design (GD) techniques to streamline the process. The proposed workflow was implemented using GD-embedded software, Fusion (Autodesk Inc.), and tested by designing PSIs for one Le Fort I osteotomy case and one genioplasty case. The performanc
