OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) combined with gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) in the diagnosis of inborn errors of metabolism in children.
METHODS: Amino acids and acylcarnitines in the dry blood filter papers were tested by MS/MS, and the organic acid profiles in urea were tested by GC-MS among 4981 children suspected to be with inborn errors of metabolism from more than 100 hospitals in China. A few pediatric patients underwent analysis of activity of enzyme and gene mutation analysis too.

Gliomas are the most common primary brain tumors and a major source of mortality and morbidity in adults and children. We present clinical, biochemical and cranial magnetic resonance imaging data of six pediatric patients with L-2-hydroxyglutaric aciduria. All the children have the same ethic origin and lived in the northern area of Portugal. To potentiate the lytic action of complement on tumor cells, we have constructed heteroconjugates composed of monoclonal antibody and of the human C3b component of complement. The conjugates were formed efficiently using the heterobifunctional cross-linking reagent SPDP. The monoclonal antibody-C3b conjugate promoted the killing of K562 tumor cells by normal human serum.
