Anaerobic gram-negative rod bacteremia as a marker of gastrointestinal cancer in Japanese patients: a single-center retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Gram-negative rod (GNR) bacteremia has been suggested as a clinical marker of occult cancer; however, no studies are available in this regard in the Japanese population. Here, we investigated the risk factors for gastrointestinal cancer with GNR bacteremia. METHODS: Patients with GNR bacteremia admitted to St. Luke's International Hospital between January 2011 and July 2021 were included. The clinical data of patients with and without cancer, 1 year before and after GNR bacteremia diagnosis, were compared. Univariate analysis was performed using χ2 and Fisher's exact tests for cat

Mechanism for biodegradation of sulfamethazine by Bacillus cereus H38.

Degradation of sulfonamides (SAs) by microorganisms has become a focus of current research. Sulfamethazine (SMZ) is a type of SA widely used in the livestock and poultry industry. However, understanding the intermediate products, degradation pathways and mechanism of SMZ biodegradation is limited at present. In this study, a SMZ degrading bacterium Bacillus cereus H38, which can use SMZ as its only carbon source, was isolated from farmland soil. The bacterium was gram-positive with rod-shaped cells. The effects of initial SMZ concentration, pH, temperature and amount of inoculation on the biod

Pseudomonas Mendocina Bacteremia: A Case Study and Review of Literature.

BACKGROUND Pseudomonas mendocina is a Gram-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped bacterium belonging to the family Pseudomonadaceae. In nature, P. mendocina has been isolated from water and soil samples. The species rarely causes disease in humans though severe infections resulting in hospitalization and intensive care have been documented. This case is perhaps the second reported case in the United States of a P. mendocina related infection. In this case report, we analyze the clinical and laboratory features of P. mendocina infection in a severely immunocompromised acquired immunodeficiency syndrome

Highly predictive support vector machine (SVM) models for anthrax toxin lethal factor (LF) inhibitors.

Anthrax is a highly lethal, acute infectious disease caused by the rod-shaped, Gram-positive bacterium Bacillus anthracis. The anthrax toxin lethal factor (LF), a zinc metalloprotease secreted by the bacilli, plays a key role in anthrax pathogenesis and is chiefly responsible for anthrax-related toxemia and host death, partly via inactivation of mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase (MAPKK) enzymes and consequent disruption of key cellular signaling pathways. Antibiotics such as fluoroquinolones are capable of clearing the bacilli but have no effect on LF-mediated toxemia; LF itself therefor

Identification of potential drug targets by subtractive genome analysis of Bacillus anthracis A0248: An in silico approach.

BACKGROUND: Bacillus anthracis is a gram positive, spore forming, rod shaped bacteria which is the etiologic agent of anthrax - cutaneous, pulmonary and gastrointestinal. A recent outbreak of anthrax in a tropical region uncovered natural and in vitro resistance against penicillin, ciprofloxacin, quinolone due to over exposure of the pathogen to these antibiotics. This fact combined with the ongoing threat of using B. anthracis as a biological weapon proves that the identification of new therapeutic targets is urgently needed. METHODS: In this computational approach various databases and onli

Listeria monocytogenes--aspects of pathogenicity.

The genus Listeria includes different species of ubiquitary present gram-positive rod shaped bacteria. The species Listeria monocytogenes causes severe diseases like meningitis and meningoencephalitis in humans. Additional groups of syndromes associated with this microorganism are the listeriosis of the pregnant woman, mostly appearing as an abortion or septic premature birth and the meningitis of the newborn. Transmission of Listeria may occur on the oral route due to infected food like raw milk and cheese, raw meat or soil contaminated food like prepacked salads, respectively. The understand

Prevention of foodborne listeriosis.

Listeria monocytogenes is a Gram-positive, rod-shaped bacterium which, although recognized in the medical literature as an opportunistic pathogen for the past 60 years, has only recently gained prominence as an important foodborne pathogen. Factors which make this organism unique among foodborne pathogens include its ability both to survive in foods under a variety of adverse conditions and to grow at low refrigeration temperatures. The organism is very widespread in the environment and can be found in a wide variety of foods. At least four major outbreaks definitively linked to the consumptio

Neonatal host defense mechanisms against Listeria monocytogenes infection: the role of lipopolysaccharides and interferons.

The human newborn infant is susceptible to lethal infection caused by a number of bacterial species including Listeria monocytogenes, a gram-positive rod which is pathogenic by virtue of its ability to survive intracellularly. In adult animals interferon (IFN)-alpha/beta and IFN-gamma or agents that induce or augment IFN production confer protection against lethal L. monocytogenes infection. Regulation and production of IFN is poorly understood during the neonatal period. We therefore evaluated the role of IFN-alpha/beta and IFN-gamma, IFN-inducers (polyinosinic:polycytidylic acid, amino-bromo

Isolation and characterization of a heavy metal- and antibiotic-tolerant novel bacterial strain from a contaminated culture plate of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, a green micro-alga.

Background:Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, a green micro-alga, is normally cultured in laboratories in Tris-Acetate Phosphate (TAP), a medium which contains acetate as the sole carbon source. Acetate in TAP can lead to occasional bacterial and fungal contamination. We isolated a yellow-pigmented bacterium from a Chlamydomonas TAP plate. It was named Clip185 based on the Chlamydomonas strain plate it was isolated from. In this article we present our work on the isolation, taxonomic identification and physiological and biochemical characterizations of Clip185. Methods: We measured sensitivities of Cl
