Assessment of angiogenic markers and female sex hormone receptors in pregnancy tumor of the gingiva.

PURPOSE: Oral pregnancy tumors (OPTs) arise on the inflamed gingiva of women after the first trimester of pregnancy. The expression of angiogenic markers and female hormone receptors was assessed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Immunohistochemistry was used to analyze the expression of estrogen and progesterone receptors and the expression of angiogenic factors, such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its receptor, fibroblast growth factor (FGF), and hypoxia inducible factors 1α and 3α (HIF1α and HIF3α). Experimental groups included 9 OPTs, 10 oral pyogenic granulomas from nonpregnant w

Peripheral giant cell granuloma manifestation in pregnancy.

The peripheral giant cell granuloma (PGCG) is a benign oral lesion occurring on the gingiva and alveolar ridge. It is the most common oral lesion and occurs at an average age of 30 years. The upsurge in the levels of estrogen and progesterone in pregnancy leads to a plethora of changes in various parts of human body, including the oral cavity. In the oral cavity, changes are commonly seen on the gingiva. These include pyogenic granuloma, PGCG and also peripheral ossifying fibroma, etc., The etiology of PGCG in our case might be related to hormonal alterations during the gestation period.

Management of hemangiomas and other vascular tumors.

Vascular tumors of childhood are typically benign. The 4 most common types are infantile hemangioma (IH), congenital hemangioma (CH), kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE), and pyogenic granuloma (PG). Vascular tumors must be differentiated from vascular malformations. Although tumors and malformations may appear as raised, blue, red, or purple lesions, their management differs significantly.

Diagnosis and management of focal reactive overgrowths of gingiva--a case series.

Localized overgrowths of gingiva such as peripheral fibroma, peripheral ossifying/cementifying fibroma, pyogenic granuloma and peripheral giant cell granuloma belong to a common group of lesions designated as focal reactive overgrowths (FROG). These growths are reactive in nature. They occur in response to chronic, low grade irritation caused by plaque or any other irritant. Etiology, clinical features and treatment modes of these lesions are the same with slight variations. The present case series describes five different cases of FROG where the lesions were treated by surgical excision under

Multiple long-standing massive oral mandibular granuloma gravidarum (pregnancy tumour).

Oral granuloma gravidarum (OGG) is a distinct clinical entity used to describe pyogenic granuloma developing mainly on the gingiva of pregnant women, possibly propagated by gingival high levels of active progesterone and poor oral hygiene. We report herein a 41-year-old woman presented 7 months after childbirth with two painless masses of OGG in mandibular gingiva that developed at the end of first trimester and increased gradually in size even after delivery. Surgical excisional biopsy was performed under general anaesthesia with extraction of periodontally involved mandibular anterior teeth.

An unusual case of gingival enlargement: peripheral odontogenic fibroma.

The peripheral odontogenic fibroma (POdF) is an uncommon gingival enlargement. It is a benign, unencapsulated exophytic gingival mass, which is composed of fibrous connective tissue associated with various amounts of calcifications and islands of odontogenic epithelium. The lesion is usually firm to palpation and non-tender, and it could be mistaken for other more common exophytic gingival lesions, such as peripheral ossifying fibroma, pyogenic granuloma, or peripheral giant cell granuloma. Therefore, a histopathologic examination is necessary for accurate diagnosis. This article presents a wel

Slow-growing gingival mass.

OBJECTIVES: A 33-year-old woman presented with a slow growing palatal gingival mass. The clinical differential diagnosis included benign tumors and tumor-like lesions, including the pyogenic granuloma, peripheral giant cell granuloma, peripheral ossifying fibroma, giant cell fibroma, peripheral odontogenic tumors, and oral focal mucinosis. STUDY DESIGN: The lesion was excised and histopathological examination followed by immunohistochemical staining was carried out. RESULTS: The microscopic findings and the immunohistochemical reactivity was diagnostic for a nerve sheath myxoma. CONCLUSIONS

Pathology of pyogenic liver abscess in children.

Little is known about preexisting lesions in livers of children with pyogenic liver abscess (PLA). Study of these lesions may elucidate possible predisposing factors for the disease. In Vitória, state of Espirito Santo, Brazil, PLA in children is frequently associated with helminthic infections and eosinophilia. We hypothesize that nematode infection with larvae migrating through the liver is a predisposing factor for PLA, because the infection induces immunomodulation and likely trapping of bacteria in liver granulomas. In this report, we describe observations of 22 cases of PLA in children s

Dermoscopy for the Identification of Amelanotic Acral Melanoma.

Acral lentiginous melanoma is commonly misdiagnosed, and when detected late it portends a poor prognosis. Acral lentiginous melanoma can be mistaken for verruca, pyogenic granuloma, poroma, an ulcer, or other benign skin conditions. Patients with acral skin growths often present initially to a podiatric physician or their primary care physician. It is at this point when the growth is triaged as benign or potentially malignant. Dermoscopy aids in this decision making. Historically, dermoscopy training has been geared toward dermatologists, but there is increasing recognition of the need for der

Hemangioma-like telangiectatic granuloma: A diagnostic pitfall.

A telangiectatic granuloma is a localized reactive lesion associated with prolonged irritation to the soft tissues. It may be misdiagnosed as a vascular malformation, hemangiomas, angiosarcomas, etc; as clinical presentation of the lesions resembles each other. Here, we present a case of asymptomatic swelling in the maxilla of a 17-year old female patient. The case highlights the importance of clinicopathologic correlation for the correct diagnosis and management of the case.

The Pathogenesis of Implant-Related Reactive Lesions: A Clinical, Histologic and Polarized Light Microscopy Study.

BACKGROUND: Peri-implant soft tissue reactive lesions (I-RLs) may jeopardize implant success and survival. To the best of the authors' knowledge, its pathogenesis is unknown. The objective of this study is to conduct a clinicopathologic and polarized light microscopy (PLM) analysis of 14 new I-RLs and compare them with comparable tooth-associated cases (T-RLs) to better understand I-RL pathogenesis. METHODS: Fifty-eight new cases of I-RL and T-RL were retrieved from the pathology department archives of Rambam Health Care Campus, Haifa, Israel. Retrospective analysis of histopathologic and cli

Clinical and Pathological Significance of GLUT-1 Expression in Angiosarcoma and Other Vascular Tumors.

Vascular anomalies are classified according to the ISSVA classification into vascular tumors with endothelial proliferation and vascular malformations without proliferation. Infantile hemangioma is a vascular tumor that is diagnosed by GLUT-1 immunoreactivity. GLUT-1 positivity is reportedly sometimes observed in angiosarcoma, but the clinical significance remains unclear. Here, immunohistochemistry was performed on tissue samples from patients with angiosarcoma (n = 10), pyogenic granuloma (n = 9), and senile hemangioma (n = 10), with infantile hemangioma serving as a positive control. GLUT-1

Safety and efficacy of the technique of complete tenon's membrane excision and mitomycin C in pterygium surgery.

PURPOSE: Despite the established efficacy of mitomycin C (MMC) in preventing recurrence after pterygium surgery, there is no consensus on the optimal operative technique or dose of MMC. METHODS: The authors retrospectively evaluated 90 single-headed pterygium resections performed with excision of the entire pterygium to the plica and removal of all Tenon's membrane from the scleral bed and rectus muscle. Bare sclera was exposed to 0.4 mg/mL MMC for 5 minutes for primary pterygia and 6 minutes for recurrent pterygia. These procedures were compared to a previous series of 58 procedures using ba
