"Combination Grafting" of Scalp and Body Hair to Enhance the Visual Density of Hair Transplant and Coverage of Higher Grade of Baldness.

UNLABELLED: Hair transplant is becoming the most common cosmetic procedure across the world with demand for higher density and coverage of baldness. This needs more number of donor hair follicles. Scalp donor has limitations to fulfill the required number of follicles for Norwood Grade VI and VII baldness. The body hair follicles can be used to cover up the deficit. The objective of this study was to observe the use of body hair follicles to increase the visual density and for better coverage for higher grades of baldness as an adjuvant to scalp hair follicles. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total …

Evaluation of concordance between labelling and content of 52 hair dye products: overview of the market of oxidative hair dye.

Hair dyes contain strong allergens and are widely available. Correct labelling is a necessity in order to provide information about the contents. To compare the labelling and content of hair dyes. In total, 52 hair dyes, from 11 different countries, were bought over the counter. High-pressure liquid chromatography was used for the analysis of p-phenylenediamine (PPD), toluene-2,5-diamine (2,5-TDA), and three oxidation products of PPD. There was good agreement between labelling and content, although seven of the 52 products (13.5%) studied were incorrectly labelled. There were differences in th…

Neuroplastin Isoform Np55 Is Expressed in the Stereocilia of Outer Hair Cells and Required for Normal Outer Hair Cell Function.

UNLABELLED: Neuroplastin (Nptn) is a member of the Ig superfamily and is expressed in two isoforms, Np55 and Np65. Np65 regulates synaptic transmission but the function of Np55 is unknown. In an N-ethyl-N-nitrosaurea mutagenesis screen, we have now generated a mouse line with an Nptn mutation that causes deafness. We show that Np55 is expressed in stereocilia of outer hair cells (OHCs) but not inner hair cells and affects interactions of stereocilia with the tectorial membrane. In vivo vibrometry demonstrates that cochlear amplification is absent in Nptn mutant mice, which is consistent with t…

Aminoglycoside ototoxicity and hair cell ablation in the adult gerbil: A simple model to study hair cell loss and regeneration.

The Mongolian gerbil, Meriones unguiculatus, has been widely employed as a model for studies of the inner ear. In spite of its established use for auditory research, no robust protocols to induce ototoxic hair cell damage have been developed for this species. In this paper, we demonstrate the development of an aminoglycoside-induced model of hair cell loss, using kanamycin potentiated by the loop diuretic furosemide. Interestingly, we show that the gerbil is relatively insensitive to gentamicin compared to kanamycin, and that bumetanide is ineffective in potentiating the ototoxicity of the dru…

Limitations of human occipital scalp hair follicle organ culture for studying the effects of minoxidil as a hair growth enhancer.

Minoxidil induces new hair growth in approximately one-third of patients with androgenetic alopecia after 1 year of treatment. With several conflicting reports in the literature based on small-scale studies, the current study aimed to clarify whether organ culture of human scalp anagen VI hair follicles is a suitable in vitro test system for reproducing, and experimentally dissecting, the recognized in vivo hair-growth-promoting capacity of minoxidil. Hair shaft elongation was studied in terminal anagen VI hair follicles microdissected from the occipital scalp of 36 healthy adults. A total of …

Changes in hair weight and hair count in men with androgenetic alopecia after treatment with finasteride, 1 mg, daily.

BACKGROUND: Finasteride, a type II 5alpha-reductase inhibitor, reduces scalp and serum dihydrotestosterone and has been shown to be effective in men with androgenetic alopecia (AGA). OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of finasteride on scalp hair weight in men with AGA. METHODS: Sixty-six men with AGA received finasteride, 1 mg/d, or placebo in a 48-week study, and 49 men continued in a 48-week extension. Efficacy was assessed by scalp hair weights and hair counts. RESULTS: As expected, hair counts improved with finasteride (net mean percent change +/- SE [95% …

Loose Anagen Hair Syndrome: A Scoping Review.

Loose anagen hair syndrome (LAHS) is a rare, non-scarring alopecia that may occur sporadically or follow autosomal dominant inheritance. The objective of this study was to review the etiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic features (including trichoscopy, trichogram, and microscopy), natural history, and treatment outcomes of LAHS. A scoping review was conducted using MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, and CENTRAL databases. Seventy-six studies, encompassing 425 patients with LAHS (mean age: 6.2 years), were included. Most patients were female (78.6%) with Type A LAHS (88.5%). The mo…

Estimation of hair cell loss from audiograms.

Age-related hearing loss arises from multiple cochlear pathologies. However, linking audiometric thresholds to their underlying cellular mechanisms remains a challenge. We present a biophysically grounded framework linking audiograms to the survival of inner and outer hair cells (IHCs and OHCs) along the cochlear partition. This approach uses a nonlinear, time-domain model of the peripheral auditory system, integrating cochlear mechanics, hair-cell transduction, and auditory-nerve responses. Using postmortem human data combining audiograms and histological hair-cell counts (Wu et al., 2020), w…

Contact Allergens in "PPD-Free" Hair Dyes.

Background: Hair dyes are a commonly used cosmetic product and an important cause of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). Primary hair dye agents, paraphenylenediamine (PPD) and other aromatic amines, are potent contact sensitizers. Despite some hair dyes being advertised as all natural or allergen-free, patients still present with hair dye contact allergy following the use of these products. We hypothesized that these products may contain cross-reactive ingredients not tested on standard series or undisclosed ingredients such as trace amounts of the allergens. Objective: We aimed to test hair dy…

Chedíak-Higashi Syndrome: Hair-to-toe spectrum.

Chedíak-Higashi Syndrome (CHS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the Lysosomal Trafficking Regulator (LYST) gene, leading to defective lysosomal function in immune cells, melanocytes, and neurons. Clinically, CHS is characterized by a spectrum of symptoms, including immunodeficiency, partial oculocutaneous albinism, bleeding tendencies, neurodevelopmental deficits and progressive neurodegenerative symptoms. The severity of CHS correlates with the type of LYST mutation: the classic form, linked to nonsense or frameshift mutations, presents early in childhood with sev

Spontaneous calcium transients in hair cell stereocilia.

The hair bundle of auditory and vestibular hair cells converts mechanical stimuli into electrical signals through mechanoelectrical transduction (MET). The MET apparatus is built around a tip link that connects neighboring stereocilia that are aligned in the direction of mechanosensitivity of the hair bundle. Upon stimulation, the MET channel complex responds to changes in tip-link tension and allows a cation influx into the cell. Ca2+ influx in stereocilia has been used as a signature of MET activity. Using genetically encoded Ca2+ sensors (GCaMP3, GCaMP6s) and high-performance fluorescence c…

Salmon nasal cartilage proteoglycan stimulates hair growth.

Hair loss is a commonly encountered problem. In this study, hair growth was enhanced by daily oral ingestion of salmon nasal cartilage proteoglycan (PG) in mice. Proteoglycan stimulated vesicular endothelial growth factor production in human follicle dermal papilla cells through insulin growth factor-1 receptor signaling, suggesting the possibility of hair loss improvement by PG ingestion.

Natural Compounds Used for Treating Hair Loss.

Hair loss or alopecia is a common dermatological condition affecting up to 2% of the world population. It is often caused by hereditary factors, such as male or female pattern baldness, but it can also result from various environmental factors, an unbalanced diet, or chronic illness. While hair loss is not life-threatening, it can cause significant anxiety, depression, and other psychological problems, ultimately impacting an individual's quality of life. Various treatments for hair loss, including both synthetic drugs, such as minoxidil and finasteride, or medicinal herbs, have been approved …

Combination therapy in female pattern hair loss.

Patterned hair loss is a common type of non-scarring alopecia, characterized by miniaturization of hair follicles. The etiology of female pattern hair loss (FPHL) is not clearly linked to androgens or other hormones thereby making it a challenging condition to treat. Various treatment modalities, like minoxidil (topical or oral), spironolactone, finasteride, have been tried alone or in combination with variable results. Combination therapy is superior to the monotherapy, since these multiple treatment modalities act by targeting different pathogenetic pathways, making the treatment aggressive …

Eruptive Vellus Hair Cysts: An Underdiagnosed Entity.

Eruptive vellus hair cyst (EVHC) is a rare follicular developmental abnormality of the vellus hair follicles. The usual onset is between 17 and 24 years but may be congenital. It can arise sporadically or may be inherited in an autosomal dominant fashion. They are caused by an abnormality at the infundibular level of vellus hairs. They usually appear as yellow to reddish-brown papules over the chest, limbs, and abdomen. Histologically, cyst has a stratified squamous epithelium and it contains lamellated keratin and several vellus hairs. We present this rare case of a 12-year-old male because o…
