Primary pulmonary teratoma: Report of a case and the proposition of "bronchotrichosis" as a new term.

Primary pulmonary teratoma is a very rare disease. Most follow a benign course and are incidental findings during routine chest X-rays. Hair found in sputum or in bronchus detected during bronchoscopy is also a rare condition and is usually caused by mediastinal teratoma. This case report is of a 36-year-old man who presented with halitosis. A fiber-optic bronchoscopy revealed coarse hair originated from the right upper lobe. The patient was successfully treated by right upper lobectomy, and pathology confirmed primary pulmonary teratoma. We recommend that "bronchotrichosis" could be used as a…

[Acute necrotizing gingivitis].

In the western countries, the acute necrotizing gingivitis occurs mainly in early adulthood. It is characterized by a marginal necrosis of the gingiva. The papillae appear to be punched out. The gingiva is painful and bleeds, and the patient often presents halitosis. This fusospirochetal infection invades the epithelium and the underlying connective tissue in its most superficial layer. With early acute necrotizing gingivitis, the use of chlorhexidine 0.2% is recommended, but a thorough scaling is still necessary. Antibiotics are used when the disease becomes more severe. Gingivoplasty may be …

A Late Native Oesophago-Pulmonary Fistula, Oesophageal Foreign Body and Chronic Lung Abscess After Retrosternal Colo-Oesophagoplasty.

The development of a late fistula between a native unremoved corrosively altered oesophagus and the right lung with subsequent chronic lung abscess formation 34 years after retrosternal colo-oesophagoplasty is an extremely rare complication. According to our review of the English-language literature, such a case has not been described so far. We present a 50-year-old man with complaints of dry cough, periodic epigastric postprandial pain, regurgitation of food and halitosis, which started about seven years ago. Transthoracic right-sided subtotal oesophagectomy and resection of the sixth lung s…

Oral malodorous compound causes apoptosis and genomic DNA damage in human gingival fibroblasts.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Volatile sulfur compounds are the main cause of halitosis. Hydrogen sulfide is one of these volatile sulfur compounds and the principal malodorous compound in physiological halitosis. Periodontally pathogenic activities of hydrogen sulfide have been previously reported. Hydrogen sulfide induces apoptotic cell death in aorta smooth muscle cells and in other tissues. Apoptosis plays an important role in the onset and progress of periodontitis. The objective of this study was to determine whether hydrogen sulfide causes apoptosis in human gingival fibroblasts. MATERIAL …

[Management of the dry socket with Socketol® paste].

Alveolitis sicca or dry socket is a frequent complication after tooth extraction. It is de- fined as postoperative pain in and around the extraction site, which increases in severity at any time between 1 and 3 days after the extraction accompanied by a disintegrated blood clot within the alveolar socket with or without halitosis. The occurrence of alveolitis sicca is described in the literature between 3 to 4% for simple extractions and 25 to 30% after surgical removal of third molars. Socketol® is ideally suited as a medicamentous inlay for the management of this condition due to its excelle…

Prevention. Part 1: smoking cessation advice within the general dental practice.

Smoking remains the largest single preventable cause of death and disability in the UK and costs the NHS 1.7 billion pound each year. More than 120,000 people die prematurely due to smoking related diseases. Worldwide smoking is the single most important public health problem. The detrimental effects of smoking and tobacco use on oral health are well recognised. Oral cancers and pre-cancers, periodontal diseases and poor wound healing are the most significant and serious effects of smoking on the mouth. In addition, staining of the teeth, soft tissue changes and halitosis are aesthetic and soc…

Salivary gland neoplasia in the dog and cat: survival times and prognostic factors.

Twenty-four dogs and 30 cats with histopathologically confirmed salivary gland neoplasia were retrospectively reviewed in a multi-institutional study. The predominant presenting complaint for animals with salivary gland neoplasia was that of a mass being noted by the owner; other common complaints included halitosis, dysphagia, and exophthalmia. Siamese cats were overrepresented, indicating a possible breed predisposition. The most common histopathological type was simple adenocarcinoma. Cats had more advanced disease at diagnosis than did dogs, and clinical staging was prognostic in dogs. The…

Manual Hair Removal for Intraoral Flaps: a Simple Practice for Professional Education and Patient Cancer Care.

After resection of malignant tumors of the head and neck, reconstructions are commonly performed using surgical free flaps. In non-irradiated patients, hair may continue to grow at the reconstruction site after surgery, causing undesirable effects such as difficult to maintain oral hygiene, food and saliva accumulation, halitosis, dysphagia, moral distress, and impact on intimacy and sexuality. Until a standardized laser therapy protocol is available, manual depilation is an option that should not be underestimated to improve the patient's quality of life and available to every oral healthcare…

Large Zenker's Diverticulum: A Case Report.

Zenker's diverticulum (ZD) is a type of esophageal diverticulum, a relatively rare disease in the pharyngoesophageal area. It is a pulsion diverticulum, or false diverticulum, located dorsally at the wall between the pharynx and esophagus. This area is known as Killian's triangle or dehiscence and is a region of relative weakness. Common symptoms of ZD include dysphagia, choking, persistent cough, loss of weight, hoarseness, halitosis, regurgitation of undigested food, and borborygmi within the cervical region. We are reporting a case of oropharyngeal dysphagia due to a ZD in a 65-year-old man…

Use of an oral antiseptic bioadhesive tablet in dogs.

V3703 (Stomadhex) is a tablet with bioadhesive properties enabling it to remain in place for several hours after it has been placed on the oral mucosa. It continuously releases chlorhexidine and niacinamide. In a study conducted in 15 dogs, the tablets were well tolerated by the animals. The product significantly reduced (p < 0.05): dental plaque; quantitative periodontopathogen and total anaerobic bacterial counts; spirochetes; and halitosis when used daily over a 14 day period. Gingivitis was also reduced, though not significantly (p = 0.07). Stomadhex treatment can provide a carry-over effe…
