Provision of basic water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services in health-care facilities is gaining increased attention, given growing acceptance of its importance to the maternal and newborn quality of care agenda and the universal health coverage framework. Adopting and contextualizing an emerging World Health Organization/United Nations Children's Fund Joint Program Monitoring service ladder approach to national data collected in 2010/2011, we estimated the national coverage of primary health centers (PHCs) (N = 8,831), auxiliary PHCs (N = 22,853), village health posts (N = 28,692), and

AbstractHousehold contacts of cholera patients are at a 100 times higher risk of a Vibrio cholerae infection than the general population. To examine risk factors for V. cholerae infections and investigate intervention strategies among this population, we followed household contacts of cholera patients for the 1-week high-risk period after the index patient obtained care. This study was nested within a randomized controlled trial of the Cholera-Hospital-Based-Intervention-for-7-days (CHoBI7), a handwashing with soap and water treatment intervention in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Rectal swab results were

Neurobiological models of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) emphasize disturbances of the corticostriatal circuit, but it remains unclear as to how these complex network dysfunctions correspond to heterogeneous OCD phenotypes. We aimed to investigate corticostriatal functional connectivity alterations distinct to OCD characterized predominantly by contamination/washing symptoms. Functional connectivity strengths of the striatal seed regions with remaining brain regions during the resting condition and the contamination symptom provocation condition were compared among 13 OCD patients with pr

BACKGROUND: Prompted by the H1N1 influenza epidemic in autumn 2009, Norwegian health authorities launched a campaign for better hygiene. We wanted to investigate whether there was any change in the out-of-hours contact rate for infectious diseases during this campaign.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The material consisted of remuneration claims from all doctors doing out-of-hours work during the years 2006-2009. The contact rates for nine diagnoses of infectious illness in autumn 2009 were compared with a corresponding mean from the years 2006-2008.
RESULTS: The contact rate for influenza was ten tim

Washing hands with soap at the right times - primarily after contact with faeces, but also before handling food or feeding an infant - can significantly reduce the incidence of childhood infectious disease. Here, we present empirical results which substantiate a recent claim that washing hands can be the consequence of different kinds of psychological causes. Such causes can be divided into three kinds of control over behaviour: automatic or habitual responses, motivated or goal-driven behaviour to satisfy needs, and cognitive causes which reflect conscious concerns. Empirical results are base

BACKGROUND: Mucocutaneous fungal infections, particularly oral and genital candidiasis, are the most common fungal diseases in neonatal populations. Although generally mild, non-invasive Candida infections can serve as sources of colonization increasing the risk of progression to invasive candidiasis, especially in preterm neonates.
OBJECTIVE DESIGN SETTING PATIENTS AND INTERVENTIONS: This study aimed to describe the infection prevention and control (IPC) measures, including contact precautions, disinfection of environment and shared devices and the review of hand hygiene protocols implemente

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic required schools, densely populated settings with diverse age groups, to dynamically adjust infection control strategies in response to evolving public health challenges. Despite substantial documentation of such strategies in healthcare facilities, detailed data from school environments remain limited during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.
METHODS: A nationwide web-based survey was conducted using a random sample of schools (N = 854) to examine changes in infection control strategies, the implementation of school events, and decis

BACKGROUND: Chronic lung infections are a hallmark of cystic fibrosis (CF), and the pathogens involved can be transmitted among people with CF (pwCF). The 2013 update of the CF Foundation (CFF) infection prevention and control (IP&C) recommendations emphasized education and monitoring adherence to IP&C practices. Our study aims to assess staff knowledge in outpatient CF clinics, to assess potential barriers to implementation of the 2013 IP&C recommendations, and to identify practice changes resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Goats and other small ruminants are frequently used as contact animals in petting zoo settings of zoological gardens. However, they are capable to carry a broad spectrum of zoonotic pathogens without clinical signs. In this study, we analysed the presence of different zoonotic pathogens in 300 clinically healthy goats from 14 zoological gardens in Germany. Rectal and nasal swabs were investigated with a series of cultural and molecular techniques. In addition, vaginal swabs of the 230 female goats were investigated for the presence of Coxiella burnetii by real-time PCR. Antibodies against C. b

BACKGROUND: The stability of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) on human skin remains unknown, considering the hazards of viral exposure to humans. We generated a model that allows the safe reproduction of clinical studies on the application of pathogens to human skin and elucidated the stability of SARS-CoV-2 on human skin.
METHODS: We evaluated the stability of SARS-CoV-2 and influenza A virus (IAV), mixed with culture medium or upper respiratory mucus, on human skin surfaces and the dermal disinfection effectiveness of 80% (weight/weight) ethanol against SARS-

Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (APDT) is a promising alternative to traditional antibiotics for the treatment of bacterial infections, which inactivates a broad spectrum of bacteria. However, many traditional photosensitizers (PSs) are hydrophobic with poor water solubility and easy aggregation. On the other hand, some light sources such as ultraviolet (UV) have poor penetration and high cytotoxicity. Both issues lead to undesired photodynamic therapy efficacy. To overcome these issues, we develop a novel water-soluble natural PS (sorbicillinoids) obtained by microbial fermentation using r

BACKGROUND: In March 2017, the New Jersey Department of Health received reports of 3 patients who developed septic arthritis after receiving intra-articular injections for osteoarthritis knee pain at the same private outpatient facility in New Jersey. The risk of septic arthritis resulting from intra-articular injection is low. However, outbreaks of septic arthritis associated with unsafe injection practices in outpatient settings have been reported.
METHODS: An infection prevention assessment of the implicated facility's practices was conducted because of the ongoing risk to public health. T

Neonatal deaths account for almost two-thirds of infant mortality worldwide; most deaths are preventable. Two-thirds of neonatal deaths occur during the first week of life, usually at home. While previous Egyptian studies have identified provider practices contributing to maternal mortality, none has focused on neonatal care. A survey of reported practices of birth attendants was administered. Chi-square tests were used for measuring the statistical significance of inter-regional differences. In total, 217 recently-delivered mothers in rural areas of three governorates were interviewed about a

In this study, we report an outbreak of Salmonella enterica serotype Livingstone resistant to extended-spectrum cephalosporins that occurred in a neonatal ward of the maternity department of Farhat Hached Hospital, Sousse, Tunisia, in 2002. A total of 16 isolates were recovered from 16 babies hospitalized in the ward during the period 1 to 16 July. All these babies developed diarrhea, and three of them developed septicemia. All the isolates demonstrated resistance to ceftriaxone and ceftazidime due to the production of an extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL). The isolates were also resistan
