In this report we describe a male patient with the interesting combination of a large congenital scalp defect, distal limb reduction anomalies, right spastic hemiplegia and hypoplasia of the left arteria cerebri media. Follow-up data from birth up to the age of 18 years revealed positive evolution with low to normal intelligence. The findings in the present patient, i.e. an Adams-Oliver syndrome associated with a severe neurological deficit, are best explained as resulting from interruption of the early embryonic blood supply.

Aplasia cutis congenita (ACC) is a skin disorder in which localized or widespread areas of skin are absent at birth. It has been associated with numerous anomalies and recognizable syndromes. We report a newborn infant with ACC of the scalp, multiple facial abnormalities including cleft palate but not cleft lip, hypoplasia of the distal phalanges of the hands, ectrodactyly of the feet, and epidermolysis bullosa of the extremities and lower trunk. Although this patient had some features that overlapped with ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-clefting syndrome, the absence of cleft lip and presen

Fryns, in 1979, delineated an autosomal recessive lethal syndrome of multiple congenital malformations, including diaphragmatic defect, craniofacial anomalies and distal limb hypoplasia. So far, 33 cases of Fryns syndrome have been published. We here report the fourth case of Fryns syndrome with consanguinous parents. It was the second child of healthy Turkish parents (first cousins). Pregnancy was complicated by massive polyhydramnios since week 32. Imperforate anus and diaphragmatic defect was detected by ultrasound. Spontaneous delivery occurred in week 37, the child died 5 hrs after birth.

Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome is a rare congenital malformation characterized by a large angiomatous nevus; hypertrophy of soft tissue or overgrowth of bone, or both; and venous varicosities. The cases of 108 patients who had a diagnosis of this syndrome between 1956 and 1990 were reviewed. One hundred and twenty-six anomalies were found in twenty-nine patients, each of whom had one to thirteen malformations of the fingers or toes, or both. The ratio of female patients to male patients was approximately two to one. Twenty-six patients had macrodactyly affecting one to six digits; nine, syndactyly

Two patients, one with Sézary syndrome and one with mycosis fungoides are described, in whom lesions on the palms and soles were associated with extensive ulceration and gave rise to diagnostic difficulty. Extensive ulceration of the palms and soles is uncommon; its presence should alert clinicians to the possibility of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma.

Minor N.Ny., a 2-year-old girl, was examined in 1986 in a contested paternity case by an order of court. The defendant did not admit paternity and named another man, so anthropological and blood-group examinations were performed on mother, child and the two men. Giving expert opinion may prove to be difficult following anthropological examinations for developmental anomalies of either party. However, the observed disease or developmental anomaly may have clinical importance for parties examined 'by chance'. In our case morphological deviation was detected in mother.

A 14-month-old female infant with a syndrome mainly consisting of cortical blindness, psychomotor retardation and postaxial polydactyly (type B in hands and type A in feet) was studied. Two deceased sibs were similarly affected. Differential diagnosis and the review of medical literature permit the individualization of a distinct syndrome with a probable autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance.

The authors describe three cases of familial acrocephalosyndactyly (ACS) in two boys (9 and 3 years of age) and in their 7.5-year old sister. In addition, irregularities in skull and limbs were found in the 46-year old father as well as in two other children, i.e., two girls, 14 and 4 years of age. The mother (46 years-old) and the remaining four 4 boys (12-, 9-, and 7-years-old), as well as the youngest child, a son, 1-year-old) did not show any deviations. The diagnosis of the Saethre-Chotzen syndrome in six members of one family was based on the finding of a typical skull deformation (oxybr

Ellis-van Creveld (EvC) and Curry-Hall (CH) syndromes are rare syndromes that occur due to mutations of genes mapped to the chromosome 4p16 region. Hence, they both have few features that are common. The dental literature describing the oral manifestations and etiology of both syndromes is scarce. We report a case of a 7-year-old girl who appeared with features that are common to both syndromes, as well as with other features such as reduced cranial base flexure and toes of equal length with skeletal changes that have not been mentioned or described in earlier reports. The patient possibly rep

Fibular aplasia with split hand/foot or other defects of the central axis is a rare disorder that shares several characteristics with the better known tibial aplasia-ectrodactyly syndrome. They appear to be inherited in an autosomal dominant fashion. In both, however, the phenotype is markedly variable, penetrance is reduced, and apparently sporadic cases are relatively frequent. We report a new case of this disorder and review the clinical and demographic findings in 47 others identified from the literature or other sources. A key observation was that the sex ratio is biased toward males, esp

We report on 44 patients (18 with additional affected family members), with congenital distal limb contractures identified from a large study of over 350 patients with congenital joint contractures. Fourteen propositi (seven familial cases, seven isolated cases) had a newly recognized form of arthrogryposis, which we have designated distal arthrogryposis type 1, with the predominant manifestations of autosomal dominant inheritance; tightly clenched fists at birth, with medially overlapping fingers, ulnar deviation, and camptodactyly in adults; and positional foot deformities. Contractures at o

Patellofemoral pain and instability account for 25% of all sports-related knee problems. However, definitive analysis seems to be difficult. Descriptive findings like "anterior knee pain", "patellofemoral pain syndrome", or "chondromalacia" are used instead of diagnosis. One reason may be the complex pathomechanics of the patellofemoral joint which is suspended between the pelvis, the femur, and the tibia and subsequently is influenced by the whole lower extremity from the hip down to the foot. On the other hand, different signs and functional tests are in use with at times lack of quantificat

Not all poliomyelitis-like paralytic illnesses can be attributed to polioviruses. Among the most recently recognized agents able to cause severe central nervous system disease with persistent flaccid paralysis is enterovirus type 71. In the 1969-1973 California outbreaks during which strains of this type were first reported, meningitis predominated, but cases of encephalitis were also seen. Outbreaks in different regions of the world followed. In some, hand-foot-and-mouth syndrome predominated; in others, meningitis; and in some, the clinical patterns were mixed. In the 1975 Bulgarian outbreak

We report on the fifth case, and oldest reported patient, of an individual affected with mosaic tetrasomy 5p resulting from an isochromosome 5p [i(5)(p10)] marker chromosome. A syndrome of mosaic tetrasomy 5p is defined, and includes the following features seen in the reported cases: developmental delay, seizures, ventriculomegaly (other brain anomalies), small stature/growth delay and mosaic pigmentary skin changes. Other findings include various dysmorphic facial features as well as hand and foot anomalies. This syndrome is likely more common than suggested in the literature, as the clinical

Acrocallosal syndrome (ACS) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by craniofacial dysmorphism, agenesis or hypoplasia of the corpus callosum, duplication of the phalanges of the hallux, more rarely the thumbs, post-axial polydactyly, syndactyly and severe mental retardation. Here we report the two first descriptions of acrocallosal syndrome in fetus with extensive neuropathological study and provide new data regarding additional brain abnormalities in ACS. The first case was a 25-gestational week male fetus displaying craniofacial and limb abnormalities, with bilateral syndactyly of

PURPOSE: Congenital hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (CHH) and split hand/foot malformation (SHFM) are two rare genetic conditions. Here we report a clinical entity comprising the two.
METHODS: We identified patients with CHH and SHFM through international collaboration. Probands and available family members underwent phenotyping and screening for FGFR1 mutations. The impact of identified mutations was assessed by sequence- and structure-based predictions and/or functional assays.
RESULTS: We identified eight probands with CHH with (n = 3; Kallmann syndrome) or without anosmia (n = 5) and SHFM,
