GOAL OF WORK: The aim of the study was to investigate the incidence of herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1) infection in mucositis during head and neck cancer radiotherapy.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Sixty patients with malignant head and neck tumor, eligible to receive radiotherapy, who were referred to the Dental Oncology Unit, entered the study. Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection usually occurs in immunocompromised or severely debilitated patients. It is not so common in patients with renal transplants. Varicella zoster virus (VZV), herpes simplex virus (HSV) and cytomegalovirus (CMV) are all members of the Herpesviridae family.Humans are the only source of infection for these double stranded DNA viruses. Infants may acquire these infections in utero, peripartum, or postnatally, resulting in a variety of clinical syndromes, ranging from asymptomatic infection to severe infection,with high mortality rates and significant long-term morbidity. This article presents the epidemiology, clinical characteristics, treatment,and prevention strategies for VZV, HSV, and CMV infections in infants.

We describe a patient with acute encephalomyeloradiculitis associated with herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) DNA in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and we also review 4 similar cases previously reported from Japan. We describe a preterm neonate delivered by cesarean section with intact membranes who had herpes simplex virus (HSV) encephalitis at 9 days of age and whose twin with a separate amniotic membrane that was pierced for insertion of a fetal scalp electrode simultaneously had HSV infection of the scalp. There is increasing evidence that the herpes simplex virus may account for some gastric ulcer disease. Two 3-year prospective studies from 1982-1984 and 1986-1988 in Tanzania identified 189 children with corneal ulceration, of whom 92 (48.7%) were due to herpes simplex keratitis. In 1982-1984 herpes simplex keratitis was responsible for 35.5% of corneal ulcers (38 of 107), compared with 65.8% (54 of 82) in 1986-1988 (P = 0.00006). It is postulated that the increase in corneal ulceration due to herpes simplex keratitis can be attributed to an increase in the incidence and severity of malaria infection.

Herpes simplex virus is a commonly encountered infectious agent in clinical practice. The syndromes with which it is usually associated are well described and generally easily recognized. This report documents that two uncommon clinical syndromes, ulceroglandular fever and oculoglandular fever, may be caused by this virus. Our patient's case was even more unusual in that both conditions occurred simultaneously.

The lyophilized infusion from flowers of Verbascum thapsiforme Schrad. (FVI) showed antiviral activity in in vitro studies against Fowl plague virus, several influenza A strains, influenza B strain as well as Herpes simplex virus. Influenza viruses titer decreased by 1-3 log units, while of H. simplex virus by 2.3 log. FVI has shown virucidal activity on H. simplex virus at 300 micrograms/ml, but did not inactivate influenza viruses. Phytochemical investigations of FVI have shown the presence of flavonoids, iridoids, phenolic acids, saponins, amino acids and free sugars.

Two sexually active female patients presented with acute meningitis. The CSF abnormalities were severe and persistent. In spite of the absence of genital lesions, serological studies revealed a primary infection by herpes simplex virus type 2. An immunoblot study revealed intrathecal synthesis of anti-herpes antibodies early in the course of the disease.
