Surveying Indian gay men for coping skills and HIV testing patterns using the internet.

BACKGROUND: Surveying vulnerable and incarcerated populations is often challenging. Newer methods to reach and collect sensitive information in a safe, secure, and valid manner can go a long way in addressing this unmet need. Homosexual men in India live with inadequate social support, marginalization, and lack legal recognition. These make them less reachable by public health agencies, and make them more likely to continue with high-risk behaviors, and contract human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). AIMS: To understand coping skills and HIV testing patterns of homosexual men versus heterosexual

[HIV infected women in Copenhagen. Risk factors and sex behavior].

A total of 115 women were found to be HIV-antibody positive during the period January 1985 to September 1988 in the three large hospitals in Copenhagen. Thirty-five women (31%) had been infected heterosexually, 63 (55%) were intravenous drug addicts, 12 (10%) had been infected by transfusion and in five (4%) the mode of transmission was unknown. In 1988, 73% of the women who were found to be HIV-positive were infected heterosexually while only 14% were infected in this manner in 1985. Out of the heterosexually HIV-infected women, 25 (71%) had probably been infected by a man from a risk group w

Homophobia and mental health: a scourge of modern era.

Homophobia is still a scourge in the modern era. Despite a greater acceptance of sexual variations and same-sex marriage in many countries, homophobia is widely sustained by religious, political and cultural values and beliefs at individual and social level. Most of homophobic attitudes are based on the principle of heteronormativity according to which heterosexuality is the standard for legitimating social and sexual relationships and homosexuality is considered as an abnormal variant. Homophobia may be also recognised at institutional level (state-sponsored homophobia, social homophobia) and…

Liminal identities: Caribbean men who have sex with men in London, UK.

Accounts by 10 Caribbean men who have sex with men living in the UK reveal them to be liminal beings with unstable and unresolved identities … al, overt and covert policing of their and other gay men's behaviour: through strategic pretence at heterosexuality and/or condemnation of men engaging in behaviour identifiable as stereotypically homosexual, for example. In reality, the students were more conservative than physicians about abortion, were more liberal than physicians about masturbation and premarital and extramarital sex, and recognized more sexual misinformation. Students anticipated that physician …

Relation between psychiatric syndromes and behaviorally defined sexual orientation in a sample of the US population.

Most surveys of the prevalence of psychiatric disorders among lesbians and gay men find no increased risk in comparison with heterosexuals. However, the majority of this work has relied on convenience samples drawn from the visible lesbian and gay community. The authors examined differences in 1-year prevalence of six psychiatric syndromes among sexually active individuals in the 1996 National Household Survey of Drug Abuse who reported either exclusive heterosexuality (n = 9,714) or having any same-gender sex partners (n = 194) in the prior year. Although nearly three quarters of homosexually…

Patterns of disordered eating behavior in women by sexual orientation: a review of the literature.

Most disordered eating research has focused on White, heterosexual women. More empirical work is needed to better understand disordered eating among women of diverse backgrounds. Given evidence of disparities between heterosexual and sexual minority (i.e., non-heterosexual) women in other health behaviors (e.g., tobacco use) and outcomes (e.g., cardiovascular disease), it appears important to study disordered eating behaviors among sexual minority women. In this article, we review the extant literature on disordered eating behaviors in women across sexual orientations, with a focus on research

Is it all in the family? Sexual identity differences in DSM-5 alcohol and other drug use disorders and associations with alcohol and other drug misuse history among parents, offspring, and other relatives.

Background: The objectives of this study were to: (1) estimate the prevalence of family history of alcohol and other drug (AOD) misuse (positive family history [FH+]) in first- and second-degree relatives across sexual identity subgroups (i.e., lesbian, gay, bisexual, heterosexual); (2) compare AOD misuse among offspring of sexual minority and heterosexual parents; and (3) examine the relationships between FH+ and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) alcohol use disorder (AUD) and other drug use disorder (ODUD) across sexual identity subgroups. Variations in Substance Use and Disorders Among Sexual Minorities by Race/Ethnicity.

Little is known about racial/ethnic minority substance use and disorder-related disparities among sexual minorities as compared to their heterosexual counterparts. This study aimed to understand the associations between sexual minority status and substance use and disorders among U.S. adults stratified by race/ethnicity. Methods: We analyzed data from a sample of U.S. adults (n = 35,981) surveyed during the 2012-2013 National Epidemiological Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III. Respondents were categorized into four sexual minority statuses: heterosexual, gay/lesbian, bisexual, and co

Mapping out a spectrum of the Chinese public's discrimination toward the LGBT community: results from a national survey.

BACKGROUND: China has the world's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) population. This study assessed the discrimination experienced by LGBT individuals in China in a comprehensive way, covering discrimination perpetrated by family, media, medical services, religious communities, schools, social services, and in the workplace. METHODS: The current study involved a national survey of 31 provinces and autonomous regions. Discrimination was measured both in terms of heterosexual participants' attitudes towards LGBT individuals, and LGBT participants' self-perceived discriminat

Differences in E-Cigarette Use Behaviors and Device and Liquid Characteristics of U.S. Adults by Sexual and Gender Identity.

INTRODUCTION: E-cigarette use behaviors and device and liquid characteristics have addiction, cessation, and health implications. E-cigarettes may exacerbate or reduce existing tobacco and nicotine product disparities by sexual and gender identity. We examine e-cigarette device and liquid characteristics and tobacco and nicotine product use by sexual and gender identity. AIMS AND METHODS: Data are from the VAPER study (wave 5: Feb-Apr 2023), an online cohort of US adults (≥21 years) using e-cigarettes ≥5 days per week. Participants (n = 1186) reported on tobacco and nicotine product use and s

Sexual attraction to men as a risk factor for eating disorders: the role of mating expectancies and drive for thinness.

BACKGROUND: Men tend to give more importance than women to physical aspects when selecting a partner; thus, the internalization of beauty standards and the ideal of thinness may be greater in populations attracted to men, placing them at a higher risk of eating disorders. METHODS: In a sample (n = 398) of heterosexual and gay men and women, we evaluated the drive for thinness, body dissatisfaction, and bulimic symptomatology. Using ANCOVAs, we analyzed the differences in symptoms score according to sex, sexual orientation and relational status including body mass index (BMI) as covariate; we

Role of the Intersections of Gender, Race and Sexual Orientation in the Association between Substance Use Behaviors and Sexually Transmitted Infections in a National Sample of Adults with Recent Criminal Legal Involvement.

Limited research has focused on how substance use and sexual risk behaviors differ among individuals impacted by the criminal legal system based on social identities. Using the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, we estimated relative risk for reporting a sexually transmitted infection (STI) among intersectional social groups with criminal legal involvement using a modified Poisson regression. We then utilized multivariate logistic regression and marginal effects to measure associations between substance use behaviors and STIs and to estimate whether these varied among the intersectional s

Substance Use among Sexual Minorities: Has it Actually Gotten Better?

BACKGROUND: Despite efforts to decrease substance use, rates among sexual minority youth (SMY) remain higher than among heterosexuals. Substance use is a leading contributor to morbidity and mortality in adulthood, and SMY's use of substances is related to poorer mental and emotional health. OBJECTIVES: We sought to document the trends in substance use for a large sample of youth over 14 years with special attention to SMY. In addition, we tested whether there were disparities in substance use behaviors between SMY and heterosexual youth. Last, we examined changes in disparities over time in

Dating violence, quality of life and mental health in sexual minority populations: a path analysis.

PURPOSE: Theories explaining the impact of intimate partner violence (IPV) on mental health have focused on heterosexual relationships. It is unclear whether mental health disparities between heterosexual and sexual minority people are due to IPV or factors related to sexual orientation. The present study aimed to investigate pathways of how sexual orientation influenced quality of life and mental health. METHODS: The present cross-sectional study was conducted in 1076 young adults in a university population (934 heterosexual and 142 sexual minority groups). Structural equation modelling was

[Humanizing care in medically assisted reproduction].

Medically assisted reproduction is forty years old. Since the summer of 2021, care is no longer reserved for heterosexual couples only, but is extended to female couples and single women. This societal evolution, which has been debated at length, has highlighted the need to rethink the organization of care. Long stigmatized and trying, they have a strong impact on the life trajectories of patients, leaving traces that can have an impact on their parentality.

Examining sexual minority engagement in recovery community centers.

INTRODUCTION: Research indicates that sexual minority (SM) individuals with alcohol and other drug use disorders may underutilize recovery resources generally but be more likely to use recovery community centers (RCCs). To inform recovery supports, this study characterized SM and heterosexual RCC members by demographics and clinical and recovery support service utilization. METHODS: Cross-sectional secondary analyses compared SM and heterosexual RCC members in the northeastern U.S. (n = 337). Qualitative analyses coded the top three recovery facilitators. RESULTS: Of the 337 participants (Me

Effects of HIV voluntary medical male circumcision programs on sexually transmitted infections.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Evidence of the protective effect of voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) against HIV is well established. However, evidence of the protective effect of VMMC against other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) has been inconsistent or scarce across different populations and settings. This review summarizes the current evidence on the effect of VMMC for HIV prevention on acquisition and transmission of other STIs in heterosexual men, women, and men who have sex with men (MSM). RECENT FINDINGS: Recent findings continue to strongly support the protective effect of male
