Dentinal hypersensitivity occurs when gingival recession exposes dentin at the cervical margins of teeth. Twenty-four periodontal patients, with postoperative hypersensitive dentin were treated by burnishing saturated potassium nitrate (KNO3) to relieve pain. Using a visual analogue scale with participants acting as their own control, a subjective assessment of pain was measured and compared before and after KNO3 application. STUDY OBJECTIVE: To assess the incidence and course of immediate and delayed hypersensitivity to Centruroides antivenom.
METHODS: We performed a 12-month prospective observation study, with telephone follow-up, evaluating the incidence of anaphylaxis or anaphylactoid reactions and serum sickness after Centruroides antivenom administration. The setting for the study was a poison control center and tertiary care toxicology treatment center. The immunosuppressive effect of topical ethacrynic acid (ECA) was tested on both the induction and elicitation phases of contact sensitization in a mouse model. ECA (0.5% in vehicle) reduced the sensitization response by >50% when the sensitizer was either dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB), oxazalone (OX) or para-phenylenediamine (PPD), and was applied 1 day later to the ECA-pretreated skin site. Studies in the 1970s used lymphocyte transformation and lymphokine assays to establish a role for cell-mediated mechanisms in periodontal disease. An account is given of the experimental in vivo transfer of PPD-specific delayed hypersensitivity with a very small number of autologous lymphocytes pre-sensitised with PPD-specific transfer factor (TF). Transfer was assessed in 17 volunteers both in vivo by means of the Mantoux skin reaction, and in vitro by means of the leukocyte migration inhibition test, the lymphocyte locomotion test, and the leukocyte adherence inhibition test. Positivization of the tests suggests that TF triggers a reaction which expands the effect of hypersensitivity.

The intraperitoneal injection of Marcol oil was previously reported to result in the depletion of circulating monocytes. The way in which this depletion affected guinea-pigs' ability to respond to challenge with antigen was tested by challenging with tuberculin after sensitization and examining the ability to respond to DNCB. In order to extend previous investigations of adverse reactions to foods performed at this institution, 68 children, aged 5 mo to 15 yr, were studied. All subjects reported a history of adverse reaction to ingestion of one or more of the 14 foods under study.
