Invisible threat, tangible harm: Radiation anxiety and birth outcomes after Fukushima.

Identifying causal effects of prenatal psychological stress on birth outcomes is challenging because stressful events typically bundle psychological stress with material disruptions. The 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident provides a unique setting to overcome this challenge: while physical radiation exposure was geographically limited and well-documented, fear of radiation spread nationwide. We exploit this geographic separation to examine how maternal anxiety independently affects fetal development. Using universal Japanese birth records linked to census data, combined with a novel Google Trends

Prehabilitation in Head and Neck Surgery and Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Head and neck surgery and reconstruction for malignancy often results in significant functional, nutritional, and psychological morbidity that can delay recovery and impair quality of life. Prehabilitation offers a multimodal, proactive approach to optimize patients before surgery by targeting modifiable risk factors and baseline impairments. METHODS: In this narrative review, we synthesized current evidence and clinical guidelines across 6 domains of prehabilitation, medical risk assessment, nutritional optimization, swallowing therapy, pain management, physical conditioning, and

Frequencies and Associations of Narcolepsy-Related Symptoms: A Cross-Sectional Study.

OBJECTIVES: Narcolepsy is a disabling disease with a delayed diagnosis. At least 3 years before the disorder identification, several comorbidities can be observed in patients with narcolepsy. The early recognition of narcolepsy symptoms may improve long-term prognosis of the patients. Thus, we aimed to investigate the prevalence of the symptoms associated with narcolepsy and its social and psychological association in a sample of Sao Paulo city inhabitants. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional evaluation with 1,008 individuals from the Sao Paulo Epidemiologic Sleep Study (EPISONO). Excessi

Moral injury severity profiles and their pathways to negative emotions in medical staff: the differential mediating role of emotion regulation.

BACKGROUND: Moral injury (MI) and negative emotions (NE) are core psychological issues that severely impair the mental health and professional competence of medical staff, while emotion regulation serves as a crucial psychological resource for coping with occupational psychological distress. However, the latent severity profiles of MI among medical staff, as well as the differential mediating effects of emotion regulation strategies, i.e., cognitive reappraisal (CR) and expressive suppression (ES), between MI and negative emotion (NE) remain unexplored. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify

Suicidal ideation in patients with skin conditions: A multicentre European study.

BACKGROUND: Suicidal ideation is a significant, often overlooked, concern in dermatology. Individuals with skin diseases frequently experience psychological distress, including depression, anxiety, stigma and dissatisfaction with appearance, all of which are known risk factors for suicidality. Despite this, large-scale multicentre data across different dermatological conditions in Europe remain scarce. OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of suicidal ideation among dermatological outpatients across Europe and to identify sociodemographic, clinical and psychological factors associated with

Anxious Depressive Attack (ADA) -its prevalence and clinical implication.

BACKGROUND: Anxious-Depressive Attack (ADA) is one of the three types of anxiety attacks originally described by Freud. ADA is characterized by the sudden onset of intense anxiety, immediately followed by intrusive ruminations. These intrusive thoughts, often centered on past regrets or future worries, cause significant psychological distress. Some individuals respond to these episodes with maladaptive or impulsive coping behaviors. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of ADA among new patients at an anxiety disorder specialty clinic and to examine the associated psychiatric and psyc

Gender identification and sex reassignment surgery in the trans population: a survey study in France.

Drawing from controversies between medical, legal, and associative actors about the obligation of sex reassignment surgeries (SRS) for people who intend to change their civil status, this article discusses the role that medical procedures, and particularly SRS, play in contemporary gender identifications and transition pathways in France. In 2010, the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research conducted a national survey in order to study the sociodemographic characteristics, access to medical, and psychological care, and state of health among trans individuals. After a long peri

Fractionating impulsivity: neuropsychiatric implications.

The ability to make decisions and act quickly without hesitation can be advantageous in many settings. However, when persistently expressed, impulsive decisions and actions are considered risky, maladaptive and symptomatic of such diverse brain disorders as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, drug addiction and affective disorders. Over the past decade, rapid progress has been made in the identification of discrete neural networks that underlie different forms of impulsivity - from impaired response inhibition and risky decision making to a profound intolerance of delayed rewards. Herein

Mental health needs of children and young people with arthritis.

Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) is the most common paediatric rheumatological condition, affecting approximately 1 in 1,000 children and young people. It is a heterogeneous chronic disease characterised by persistent joint inflammation, often requiring long-term management to achieve remission or inactive disease. The unpredictable nature of JIA places children and young people at increased risk of mental health difficulties, which are associated with greater pain, disability, disease activity, and reduced quality of life. Emerging evidence highlights the bidirectional relationship between
