BACKGROUND: Europe faces an enormous public health challenge with aging populations and rising cancer incidence. Little is known about what concerns the public across European countries regarding cancer care towards the end of life. We aimed to compare the level of public concern with different symptoms and problems in advanced cancer across Europe and examine factors influencing this.
METHODS: Telephone survey with 9,344 individuals aged ≥16 in England, Flanders, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal and Spain. Participants were asked about nine symptoms and problems, imagining a situation o

We investigate whether imagery of voluntary movements of different body parts activates somatotopical sections of the human motor cortices. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to detect the cortical activity when 7 healthy subjects imagine performing repetitive (0.5-Hz) flexion/extension movements of the right fingers or right toes, or horizontal movements of the tongue. We also collected functional images when the subjects actually executed these movements and used these data to define somatotopical representations in the motor areas. In this study, we relate the functional activati

While the multidimensional features of electroencephalographic (EEG) signals have proven to be a valuable source of information, the development of a comprehensive diagnostic tool remains elusive due to variability of responses as observed within the subjects and epochs. We investigate whether ordinal-pattern-based complexity measures of EEG signals can capture stroke-related alterations in motor imagery (MI) tasks. EEG recordings from 36 stroke patients (acute and minor) and 36 healthy controls were analyzed using permutation entropy (PE), a robust symbolic measure of temporal irregularity. S

This study proposes a motor imagery brain-computer interface (MI-BCI) experimental paradigm for right-hand steering movements in driving scenarios. The proposed paradigm aligns more closely with actual steering behavior at the action level, aiming to address the mismatch between conventional motor imagery and actual driving tasks. To validate the feasibility of this paradigm, motor imagery EEG data were collected from 12 participants using an eight-electrode low-cost OpenBCI device and systematically analyzed. Time-frequency analysis revealed that, during right-hand steering imagery, electrode

Story reading is often accompanied with mental visualization of the described scenes and events. Recent findings indicate that individuals who report not experiencing any visual imagery (a condition called aphantasia), also report being less absorbed and engaged when reading stories. In the present study, we explored how aphantasics (n = 8) and controls (n = 20) read imagery-rich stories. We recorded eye movements while participants were reading two short stories and analyzed fixation patterns in relation to the stories' imagery content. We observed that imagery content influenced gaze fixatio

OBJECTIVE: To assess gait imagery related activations by means of high-density electroencephalography (hdEEG) in a population of early-stage PD patients and age-matched healthy controls.
METHODS: Fifteen patients with early-stage PD (Hohen & Yahr range: 1-2.0) and 14 age matched controls were recruited. They were asked to visually imagine walking on a straight pathway and on a straight pathway while crossing a hurdle in the middle. We registered hdEEG in the participants and analyzed α and β bands Event Related Desynchronizations (ERDs).
RESULTS: PD patients showed reduced low α and high β a

Motor imagery is the ability to mentally simulate a motor task without actually performing it. Furthermore, pain is an unpleasant sensory experience that involves different dimensions - sensory-discriminative, motivational-affective, and cognitive-evaluative - that are known to interfere with motor imagery. However, it remains unclear which specific pain dimension most significantly impairs motor imagery vividness. This study aims to compare the effects of unpleasant auditory (primarily affective and cognitive) and thermal (primarily sensory) stimuli, which can be assimilated to pain, on discr

Motor imagery (MI) is an important brain-computer interface (BCI) paradigm. BCI systems based on fine MI can provide an intuitive control pathway of the outer device. Electroencephalography (EEG) is a widely used modality for MI due to its high temporal resolution and portability. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) has high spatial and temporal resolution, which has received more and more attention. This study designed four kinds of MI tasks of different joints from the same upper limb, including finger, wrist, elbow, and shoulder joints, and additionally added a resting task. The EEG and MEG signal

The ability to mentally simulate an action by recalling the body sensations relative to the real execution is referred to as kinesthetic motor imagery (MI). Frontal and parietal motor-related brain regions are generally engaged during MI. The present study aimed to investigate the time course and neural correlates of complex action imagery and possible effects of expertise on the underlying action representation processes. Professional ballet dancers and controls were presented with effortful and effortless ballet steps and instructed to mentally reproduce each movement during EEG recording. T

This fMRI study investigated mental simulation of state/psychological and action verbs during adolescence. Sixteen healthy subjects silently read verbs describing a motor scene or not (STIMULUS: motor, state/psychological verbs) and they were explicitly asked to imagine the situation or they performed letter detection preventing them from using simulation (TASK: imagery vs. letter detection). A significant task by stimuli interaction showed that imagery of state/psychological verbs, as compared to action stimuli (controlled by the letter detection) selectively increased activation in the right

Remembering the past and imagining the future are hallmarks of mental time travel. We provide evidence that such experiences are influenced by individual differences in temporal and affective biases in cognitive style, particularly brooding rumination (a negative past-oriented bias) and optimism (a positive future-oriented bias). Participants completed a 7-day, cellphone-based experience-sampling study of temporal orientation and mental imagery. Multilevel models showed that individual differences in brooding rumination predicted less vivid and positive past- and future-oriented thoughts, even

SK is an 84-year-old woman diagnosed with essential tremor (ET) but no cognitive deficits. In this experiment, we tested the effects of mental rotation (a form of additional cognitive load) during reaching behavior (with the right hand) on the tremor profile of the non-moving left hand. We observed a marked increase in tremor and its variability, as well as the "freezing" of the movement pattern as effects of the cognitive load. These findings imply cognitive-motor overlaps in patients with ET, raising the possibility that the deficits reflect the loss of a common pool of neural resources, des

In this study, we examined the effect of circadian modulation on motor imagery (MI) time while also considering the effects of task complexity and duration. The ability to imagine in real time was influenced by circadian modulation in a simple walking condition, with longer MI times in the morning and evening sessions. By contrast, there was no effect of circadian rhythm in the complex, short or long walking conditions. We concluded that motor imagery time is modulated during the course of the day, but the effect of task difficulty is stronger than circadian modulation in altering the temporal

Emotion recognition by wearable devices is essential for advancing emotion-aware human-computer interaction in real life. Earphones have the potential to naturally capture brain activity and its lateralization, which is associated with emotion. In this study, we newly introduced tympanic membrane temperature (TMT), previously used as an index of lateralized brain activation, for earphone-based emotion recognition. We developed custom earphones to measure bilateral TMT and conducted two experiments consisting of emotion induction by autobiographical recall and scenario imagination. Using featur…

Memory refers to the imprint accumulated in the brain by life experiences and represents the basis for humans to engage in advanced psychological activities such as thinking and imagination. Previously, research activities focused on memory have always targeted neurons. However, in addition to neurons, astrocytes are also involved in the encoding, consolidation, and extinction of memory. In particular, astrocytes are known to affect the recruitment and function of neurons at the level of local synapses and brain networks. Moreover, the involvement of astrocytes in memory and memory-related dis…
