Consideration of intersectoral costs and benefits in health economic evaluations of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: This systematic review explores which intersectoral costs and benefits (ICBs) are considered in the economic evaluation of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) across different age groups and the related impacts on the results of economic evaluations. METHODS: Seven databases were searched from 2009 to 2024 for full economic evaluations (Ees) of PCVs from a societal perspective. ICBs were presented narratively and in tabular form. Studies were appraised on quality, and PRISMA guidelines were followed. RESULTS: In all, 57 studies were included. ICBs were captured in the followin

Lessons for medical countermeasure development from unforeseen outbreaks.

The unanticipated emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic and the rapid spread of the mpox epidemic in 2022 and 2024 brought unforeseen challenges to public health. While distinct in nature, these outbreaks share some similarities and offer valuable insights into responding to novel virus dissemination in vulnerable populations. In light of these two experiences, we aim to discern the prioritization of medical countermeasures (MCM) among antivirals, antibodies, and vaccines. Comparative analysis of MCMs reveals that while antivirals serve essential roles as therapeutic tools, monoclonal antibodies

COVID-19 vaccination among adolescents and young adults with chronic kidney conditions: a single-center experience.

BACKGROUND: Following the pandemic of COVID-19, the main focus has been on COVID-19 vaccines and herd immunity. Although the safety of the COVID-19 vaccines has been shown in clinical trials, children with chronic diseases were not included. We investigated the side effect profile and safety of the COVID-19 vaccines in adolescents with kidney disease. METHODS: A questionnaire including demographic information, history of COVID-19, vaccination status, and vaccine-related side effects was administered to the patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) stage 2-5, glomerular disease treated with i

Side Effects Reported by Moroccan Medical Students Who Received COVID-19 Vaccines.

BACKGROUND: Low confidence in the safety of COVID-19 vaccines was found to be a key promoter of vaccine reluctance especially among youth. Furthermore, young adults are an important demographic for building herd immunity through vaccination. As a result, their reactions to getting COVID-19 vaccines are crucial in our fight against SARS-CoV-2. OBJECTIVE: The overall goal of this study was to look into the shortterm side effects experienced by Moroccan medical and pharmacy students after receiving COVID-19 vaccines. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey-based study to assess the COVID-19 vaccines'

COVID-19 seroprevalence amongst healthcare workers: potential biases in estimating infection prevalence.

SARS-CoV-2 serological tests are used to assess the infection seroprevalence within a population. This study aims at assessing potential biases in estimating infection prevalence amongst healthcare workers (HCWs) when different diagnostic criteria are considered. A multi-site cross-sectional study was carried out in April-September 2020 amongst 1.367 Italian HCWs. SARS-CoV-2 prevalence was assessed using three diagnostic criteria: RT-PCR on nasopharyngeal swab, point-of-care fingerprick serological test (POCT) result and COVID-19 clinical pathognomonic presentation. A logistic regression model

Factors associated with COVID-19 vaccination intentions among adults in the deep South.

The recent approval of several COVID-19 vaccines signals progress toward controlling the pandemic. Although social distancing and masking have been effective, vaccines are an important additional measure of protection to reduce COVID-19 spread. Adequate uptake is essential to reach herd immunity, estimated to be approximately 67%. However, vaccine hesitancy, the fast-tracked nature of the COVID-19 vaccines, and misinformation circulating through various forms of media have contributed to lower vaccination intention than desired. The current research study developed an online survey conducted v

The Use of GIS Technology to Optimize COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution: A Case Study of the City of Warsaw, Poland.

The COVID-19 pandemic is a global challenge, and the key to tackling it is vaccinating a specified percentage of the population to acquire herd immunity. The observed problems with the efficiency of the vaccination campaigns in numerous countries around the world, as well as the approach used at the initial stage of the National Immunization Program in Poland, prompted us to analyse the possibility of using GIS technology to optimize the distribution of vaccines to vaccination sites so as to minimize the period needed to vaccinate individual population groups. The research work was carried out

Dengue Virus Serotype 4 Is Responsible for the Outbreak of Dengue in East Java City of Jember, Indonesia.

Outbreaks of dengue virus (DENV) in Indonesia have been mainly caused by the DENV serotype-1; -2; or -3. The DENV-4 was the least-reported serotype in Indonesia during the last five decades. We recently conducted a molecular epidemiology study of dengue in the Jember regency, East Java province, Indonesia. Dengue is endemic in the region and outbreaks occur annually. We investigated the clinical characteristics and etiology of dengue-like febrile illness in this regency to understand the disease dynamics. A total of 191 patients with clinical symptoms similar to dengue were recruited during an

Local rabies transmission and regional spatial coupling in European foxes.

Infectious diseases are often transmitted through local interactions. Yet, both surveillance and control measures are implemented within administrative units. Capturing local transmission processes and spatial coupling between regions from aggregate level data is therefore a technical challenge that can shed light on both theoretical questions and practical decisions. Fox rabies has been eliminated from much of Europe through oral rabies vaccination (ORV) programmes. The European Union (EU) co-finances ORV to maintain rabies freedom in EU member and border states via a cordon sanitaire. Models

Census and vaccination coverage of owned dog populations in four resource-limited rural communities, Mpumalanga province, South Africa.

Dogs (Canis familiaris) are often free-roaming in sub-Saharan African countries. Rabies virus circulates in many of these populations and presents a public health issue. Mass vaccination of dog populations is the recommended method to decrease the number of dog and human rabies cases. We describe and compare four populations of dogs and their vaccination coverage in four different villages (Hluvukani, Athol, Utah and Dixie) in Bushbuckridge Municipality, Mpumalanga province, South Africa. Cross-sectional surveys were conducted in the villages of Athol, Utah and Dixie, while data from a Health

Recombination within the pandemic norovirus GII.4 lineage.

Norovirus (NoV) is the leading cause of viral gastroenteritis globally. Since 1996, NoV variants of a single genetic lineage, GII.4, have been associated with at least six pandemics of acute gastroenteritis and caused between 62 and 80% of all NoV outbreaks. The emergence of these novel GII.4 variants has been attributed to rapid evolution and antigenic variation in response to herd immunity; however, the contribution of recombination as a mechanism facilitating emergence is increasingly evident. In this study, we sought to examine the role that intragenotype recombination has played in the em

A game dynamic model for vaccine skeptics and vaccine believers: measles as an example.

Widespread avoidance of Measles-Mumps-Rubella vaccination (MMR), with a consequent increase in the incidence of major measles outbreaks, demonstrates that the effectiveness of vaccination programs can be thwarted by the public misperceptions of vaccine risk. By coupling game theory and epidemic models, we examine vaccination choice among populations stratified into two behavioral groups: vaccine skeptics and vaccine believers. The two behavioral groups are assumed to be heterogeneous with respect to their perceptions of vaccine and infection risks. We demonstrate that the pursuit of self-inter

Projected cost-effectiveness of new vaccines for adolescents in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Economic assessments that guide policy making on immunizations are becoming increasingly important in light of new and anticipated vaccines for adolescents. However, important considerations that limit the utility of these assessments, such as the diversity of approaches used, are often overlooked and should be better understood. OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to examine economic studies of adolescent vaccines and compare cost-effectiveness outcomes among studies on a particular vaccine, across adolescent vaccines, and between new adolescent vaccines versus vaccines that are recommended

Spatial control of rabies on heterogeneous landscapes.

Rabies control in terrestrial wildlife reservoirs relies heavily on an oral rabies vaccine (ORV). In addition to direct ORV delivery to protect wildlife in natural habitats, vaccine corridors have been constructed to control the spread; these corridors are often developed around natural barriers, such as rivers, to enhance the effectiveness of vaccine deployment. However, the question of how to optimally deploy ORV around a river (or other natural barrier) to best exploit the barrier for rabies control has not been addressed using mathematical models. Given an advancing epidemic wave, should t

Global epidemiology of meningococcal disease and vaccine efficacy.

BACKGROUND: Control of meningococcal infection has a high priority in many industrialized nations, because of the high mortality rates associated with invasive infection, the public health effects of disease outbreaks, and the position of Neisseria meningitidis as a leading infectious cause of death in childhood. Throughout the past 200 years, epidemics of meningococcal infection have been noted in Europe, Africa, Asia, the United States, and New Zealand. The proportions of cases caused by the 5 predominant capsular types (A, B, C, Y, and W135) associated with the disease vary among different

Transmission of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae in pigs under field-like conditions: emphasis on tonsillar colonisation and passively acquired colostral antibodies.

The objectives of this study were to elucidate at which age tonsillar colonisation by Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae occurs in pigs and relate this occurrence to the presence of colostral antibodies to A. pleuropneumoniae. The infection patterns were studied in an isolated cohort of pigs, which consisted of the offspring from five sows originating from a conventional pig herd. The sows were transferred to isolated research facilities before farrowing. A. pleuropneumoniae was detected on the tonsils of all sows. After a nursing period of 3 weeks, the pigs were weaned and reared isolated from o

Epidemiology of animal trypanosomiasis on a cattle ranch in Kilifi, Kenya.

A study of the epidemiology of animal trypanosomiasis was carried out on a 2500 ha cattle ranch, with a history of trypanosomiasis, in the Coast Province of Kenya in 1982. The tsetse survey on the ranch revealed one breeding focus of Glossina austeni in a thicket of approximately 50 ha. Trypanosomes were detected in 20% of the 46 dissected tsetse. During the study period of 9 months, 0.8% of the 3315 samples collected from 2300 Ayrshire X Sahiwal crossbred cattle were found infected with trypanosomes; 32% of 5909 samples collected from the same cattle had a packed cell volume (PCV) of 30% or l

Imported communicable diseases in Singapore.

Most communicable diseases in Singapore have been brought under control and some eliminated. In recent years, an increasing proportion of the reported cases turned out to be imported. Between the period 1977 and 1982, 96% of malaria, 44% of paratyphoid, 32% of typhoid, 20% of leprosy, 11% of acute viral hepatitis, 7% of dengue fever/dengue haemorrhagic fever and 7% of cholera were imported. About 10% of the notified tuberculosis cases were non-residents while all the sporadic cases of poliomyelitis (except in 1977) and diphtheria (except in 1982) were contracted outside Singapore. The majority

Effects of leptin Arg25Cys on peripheral mononuclear cell counts and antibody response to vaccination in beef cattle.

A single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the leptin gene that results in Arg25Cys has been associated with beef carcass quality and milk composition in dairy cattle. However, leptin (LEP) also plays a role in immune performance and hence it was important to determine whether selection based on this SNP would negatively affect immune cell numbers or antibody production. LEP c.73C>T was assessed for effects on immune cell counts and antibody titres in 27 beef cattle herds (n = 556). A commercial rabies vaccine had been administered to these animals. Prior to being vaccinated, counts of several
