OBJECTIVES: This study examined the risk of teenage motherhood among females whose mothers were incarcerated.
METHODS: Using linked adminis … years. Additional data captured sociodemographic characteristics and adversity exposures, including incarceration, mental illness, and substance use among first-generation mothers, and second-generation females' experiences of child maltreatment and family and domestic violence. We calculated rates and hazard ratios for births to second-generation teenage femal …

Formerly incarcerated individuals have poorer oral health and less frequent dental care utilization than the general population. However, prior work has overlooked the relationship between prior incarceration and disparities in dental insurance coverage. Using data from the Health and Retirement Study (n = 11,638), findings from multiple logistic regression analyses demonstrate that formerly incarcerated older adults are significantly less likely to have dental insurance coverage (odds ratio [OR] = 0.745, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.608, 0.912). After accounting for the income-to-poverty …

OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to describe patterns of postpartum contraception plan documentation and fulfillment among patients receiving pr … lfillment were likely a byproduct of a combination of individual preferences, anticipated length of incarceration, clinician practice patterns, and facility policies.
IMPLICATIONS: There may be misalignment between patient preferences for postpartum contraception method and what is discussed, documented, or provided during incarceration.

Incarcerated gravid uterus (IGU) is a rare disease process where the retroflexed uterus becomes trapped within the pelvis preventing normal pregnancy development. IGU's presenting chief complaints are common complaints that can occur in a normal pregnancy. It has a high delayed diagnosis rate, and a high morbidity and mortality to the pregnancy and to the pregnant patient. It is important for emergency medicine physicians to recognize this diagnosis, appropriately treat the acute complications and ensure follow up with our obstetrics colleagues.

Background: Oral health is crucial to overall well-being but is significantly neglected among incarcerated women, who face higher rates of dental caries, periodontal disease, and edentulism due to systemic barriers, behavioral risks, and socio-demographic vulnerabilities. Objective: This review evaluates the oral health status of incarcerated women, identifying key determinants and assessing intervention effectiveness. Methods: A systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases was conducted as per PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Studies published in English in the last 15 y

BACKGROUND: Women leaving incarceration face numerous barriers to reentry, including lack of social support, mental health conditions, and trauma.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility of developing and implementing a peer-support group by and for formerly incarcerated women (FIW).
METHODS: A draft peer support curriculum was developed and refined based on a focus group with FIW. The program was implemented and participants engaged in a follow-up focus group to provide feedback.
RESULTS: Participants reported several benefits of participation, positive experiences regarding program logisti…

INTRODUCTION: Despite increased national and international funding to combat the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) pandemic, prison health services remain underfunded, resulting in poor HIV management among inmates. This study assessed viral suppression rates among HIV-positive inmates across four central prisons in Cameroon to evaluate the effectiveness of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in these settings.
METHODOLOGY: This cross-sectional study included four central prisons-prisons A, B, C, and D-each located in different regions of Cameroon. Data were obtained from patient records, and blood

Incarceration is a significant stressor with long-term health implications. Limited autonomy in jail restricts stress-reducing opportunities, but recreation time (rec-time) may help mitigate stress. We estimated the association between rec-time attendance and stress among people incarcerated in a rural Southwestern U.S. jail. From 2017 to 2018, we recruited participants from Coconino County Detention Facility for a cross-sectional health study. Participants completed the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and reported rec-time attendance. A log-binomial regression estimated prevalence ratios for rec…

As incarcerated individuals age, prison systems often struggle to provide appropriate long-term care. Compassionate release policies can address this gap by allowing seriously ill or aging individuals to transition to community-based care. Many nursing homes, however, are reluctant to admit individuals recently released from prison. This study examined how incarceration status affects nursing home admission decisions.Using a statewide secret shopper methodology, researchers contacted all 74 licensed nursing homes in Rhode Island. Callers first inquired about bed availability for a standardized…

PURPOSE: To characterize the epidemiology of consumer product-related ocular injury in the United States (US) incarcerated population, and identify preventable causes.
METHODS: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) database was queried for cases of eye injury from 2014 to 2023. Incarcerated cases were identified using the keywords "prison", "jail", "inmate", and "incarcerate". Year of injury, diagnosis, product code, and demographic information were gathered and compared between the incarcerated and general US populations using SPSS version 29 (IBM Corp.). A narrative ana

Opioid use disorder (OUD) affects millions in the USA, with a growing disparity among Black men, a patient population which also suffers higher rates of incarceration. Medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD), specifically buprenorphine and methadone, significantly reduce mortality, though remain underutilized particularly within the incarcerated population. Post-release opioid overdose is the leading cause of mortality among recently incarcerated individuals, so opportunities to offer life-saving treatment must be capitalized upon. Hospitalization offers an ideal time to start MOUD, yet tho…

BACKGROUND: Incarcerated pregnant individuals face substantial barriers to timely and appropriate perinatal care, which may contribute to poorer maternal and newborn health outcomes compared to the general population. Their experiences, both during incarceration and post-release, offer critical insight into systemic obstacles affecting access to care. This study explores the perspectives of individuals who were pregnant while incarcerated in Ontario, Canada, examining their perinatal experiences and the factors contributing to adverse health outcomes for them and their newborns.
METHODS: We u…

Primary ventral hernia (PVH) is a main differential diagnosis of abdominal wall masses and typically occurs at areas of structural weakness, such as the linea alba. This report draws attention to atypical PVHs of the peri-inguinal region, an underdiagnosed subgroup of defects located adjacent to the inguinal canal and below the semilunar line. The absence of a standardized definition or classification complicates the diagnosis of this infrequent pathology. We present a case of a patient with a tender abdominal wall mass, initially interpreted as superinfected hematoma. Despite drainage, the pa

Inguinal hernias are among the most common cases presented to a surgeon. In spite of extensive research and clinical experience over centuries, inguinal hernias still pose anatomical challenges for operating surgeons, especially with a propensity for recurrence. One such complicated entity is the Amyand's hernia - defined as an inguinal hernia contained within the hernial sac - the vermiform appendix - as the herniated content. It is a rare clinical presentation and carries with it certain complexities with regard to operative decisions and clinical management. We present a case of a 71-year-o
